Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

If anyone would like to watch me play the game or has questions about it, I'l be streaming live now on http://twitch.tv/klyka

Since i just recently bought a good GPU (from GTX460 to R9 280), im wondering if you are broadcasting via either Nvidia's gaming experience (shadowplay?) or AMD's gaming evolved apps? Just wondering if it affects performances a lot.

I am just using OBS and streaming via CPU encoding. It gives better quality and I don't notice any performance problems compared to when I tried NVENC

Klyka did you order a DK2?

Hey, no I did not, I am not a fan of early adopting, so I will wait until VR headsets are properly out, have fixed specs and enough content to use them for.

Does the beta pack have any benefits besides being able to play earlier? I'm interested in the game and even have an Oculus Rift DK2, but I can wait if it's $25 more for only beta access.

Either way, game looks fucking nice from the youtube stuff I've seen.

No. The current beta package doesn't include anything extra.

Finally managed to get a Lakon Type 6. Costs a lot but i've got the feeling i'll be making that money back in no time. 100 cargo capacity and the kickass jump distance the type 6 has just makes hauling a shitload easier and profitable. The galaxy map with the jump distances gets really confusing with the type 6 as nearly all the node connections show up, its like a big web.

Just dropped out of subspace inside the Aulin Enterprise docking bay. Felt amazing until I noticed the Trespass Warning message at the top and boosted for the exit before the guns attempted to murder me.

Trading is hard. I have absolutely no bloody idea what to buy, where to sell, how to calculate best profits. I bought a pack of indites thinking that it had low buy cost and pretty good galactic average, but so far nobody in the area I can jump to wants to buy it for a good price. This is the third time I buy something and sell it at a loss. :/

I should just go back to blasting stuff. Here gun, there enemy, pull trigger and win money.

If it's anything like old Elite, you want a nice trade route. You find a high tech planet who has loads of computers, you sell to a low tech who pay £££ for them, in return you take all their crops and stuff and trade them back to the tech planet.

This might help you.
If it feels like cheating, keep in mind that the final game should have similar stuff built in, as seen in newsletter #10!

Or ju can download the client :)

I am netting around 10k per trip now (one jump only).

EDIT: LeBart, I hate you, I am going to find you, interdict you then steal all your stuff.

Sadly my "The Red Eagle" pirate chracter got shot down yesterday because I bit off more than I could chew. SHould not have attacked a wanted cobra with missiles next to a security vessel. Both attacked me,I tried to kill the eagle first and the cobra used that to shoot me down with missiles. Missiles are crazy if you don't have chaff or point defense. Just crazy.

So since then I started up a new character which people on stream dubbed the "Space Vagabond". Got myself a Hauler cause it can jump further and will now try to visit every star system in my next stream, exploring the current universe.

I tried that earlier and to me all the data seemed extremely wrong. Either the prices were wrong or the items didn't even exist in the market to be bought or sold.

Right now I am looking at what I can sell from i Bootis, it says Personal Weapons are the biggest profit sellers to Eranin and a whole bunch of other places, the station doesn't sell that. :P

My route for a long time was Freeport Coltan -> Dahan Titanium -> Chango Fish -> Freeport

Edit: Another run in with sfried. Opens a voice chat then always ends with "OH CRAP" with an immediate "VOICE COMMS TO SiG CLOSED" message. I always imagine his ship exploding somewhere. Comedy gold.

Further edit: Just bought a Type 6 and my god the jump distance on this thing is incredible. Can truly explore now. So good.

I started with fish from chango (i-bootis) to Aulin, and then some tech i cant recall the name from Aulin to I-bootis.

But the best early trade route i've found (although this changes all the time because of online), is (as of last night)

Dahan : Tantalum -> Asellus primus profit with full haulter ~7k
Asellus primus : Resonating separators -> Dahan profit with full hauler ~12k

Just 1 easy jump, no complicated trade routes, 18k profit easily. Got me to type 6.

I'm gonna try this trade route. Haven't really been able to play much this weekend because of work. Late yesterday though, I got the Hauler.
Very nice, but I feel like I'm cheating on my sidewinder. :p lol it feels soo much bigger though!

The one thing I don't like about the Hauler is no longer having a glass canopy up on top. I always loved looking through the top canopy to see the spaceport.

Aw.. I liked "The Littlest Hobo".. lol. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, though. Getting a feel for the different aspects of the game and different ways to play. Looks like it'll be amazing in any event.

I did break down and buy a Thrustmaster HOTAS X stick yesterday, though, so I'm sure it's just a matter of days before I jump in.

So TEST (Reddit Group) and the Elite forums members are declaring open season on anyone who has a CMDR Backer ####### name so I suggest you guys change up those names quick.
I went to the site and applied to change my name, but 36 hrs later I'm still backer ##### :(

Is it supposed to change right away?

So i'm usually not into space themed games/movies. I get really tired of all the pitch black surroundings and pristine metal space stations (no variation, i like fora and fauna). But in some weird way this game looks very appealing to me.

I'm on the fence though, it's fairly expensive atm to just jump in for the scenery.

My fear is that it's nice graphics overlaid on a very basic gameplay principle. I don't know if anyone ever played this drug dealing game on a graphic calculator (i looked it up, its called drug wars). Its a simple text based game that lets you play a supply and demand game.
It's too basic to keep the illusion going and not just see this crude mechanic all the time.

Is this is all you do? Try to figure out prices on different planets and travel to buy in low, travel somewhere else and sell high. After that you got a bit more money to invest so you buy a higher quantity, travel, sell and repeat. If you do it often enough you can buy a new engine/ship and repeat this a bit quicker. All this while never really getting out of the spaceship. the planets/space stations I saw in videos were text based (correct me if i'm wrong! I haven't seen all of it) other then the docking process.

So is traveling this universe so much fun to justify the underlying "text game". Or does an occasional pirate encounter keep it fresh?

Remember I haven't played this game! This isn't to put the game down I just want to know if the game is for me. Reading it back it seems a bit harsh, i guess you can destroy any gameplay mechanic by picking it apart...

Trading is only one aspect of the game. The main focus is combat, and it's quite possible to do nothing but bounties or pirating and never have to touch the trade market.

Lol, a word to the (un)wise: there is a separate bulletin board/contract list for delivering cargo. Don't sell your cargo and assume you've completed your mission. *facepalm*

What's the easiest way to start handling bounties and such? Just fly around looking for signal problems? I've done a bunch of trading and bought an Eagle, want to start shooting at things now.

Also, I have a mission to destroy a specific ship but am not given anything with regards to what system it is in. Is that the same system I took the quest in?

First spin with the DK2 earlier. After some very helpful guides here and there on setting it up for ED, my mind has been roundly blown. Even just being sat in a space station on the pad, looking around out of the cockpit/side windows, hell... seeing the door behind my seat was unreal! And all the menu panels coming up as I looked in their direction? I think I actually let out a minor squeal of joy when that happened.

DK2 + X52 Pro, there is no going back for me now. This was the stuff of dreams when I was a kid, watching wireframes play out on my ZX Spectrum... and now it is a (virtual) reality.

(Sidenote: here's some pics of my X52 Pro in an attempt to coax more ED players into getting themselves a HOTAS. No arguments. You won't regret it!)

My experience with Elite since Premium Beta:

"Let me fire it up for 5 minutes just to check something!"
*5 hours later*
"Just one more trade run..."
