Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

I'm awfully close to buyong this but I need to know if my PC will handle this game properly. I have a 2500k @ 3GHz, a GTX560 (non ti) and a 1080p monitor. BF4 and Titanfall kinda run like crap with anything over medium setting so I'm really wondering if I would have a good experience with ED...

Easily, i was playing with 1090T and GTX460

Great, thanks!
As it is a beta you can expect the occasional performance hiccup in places you might not expect to, but they've been improving performance as they go. Beta is beta, after all. So far though it looks great and runs smooth (i7-4770k, 16G ram, nVIDIA 660Ti (bleh..) here)

Finally could afford my first ship upgrade last night, the Lightning. Was really disappointed that it only had 4 cargo slots, just like the first ship. I did like how the cockpit was a bit smaller. All the floating ship screens were a bit closer to the seat, making things a bit easier to read in the DK2.

Anyhow, it sure was speedy! I flew out on my first cargo run, and went into a system and for the first time I noticed that on the upper left my HUD said "wanted". Thought that was weird, as I have never attacked a single ship...

Went to dock, got approved, and right as I'm passing into the hangar a ship starts blasting the crap out of my from behind. I'm immediately killed. Now I have 90 credits and the starter Sidewinder. WTF!

How did I get a "wanted" status when I never did anything bad?

I had that happen once for picking up some cargo I found floating outside the station. Went in to dock after being granted access, was promptly disassembled by the station lasers for having stolen cargo onboard.

Rule of thumb: abandoned cargo != unowned cargo :)

Lightning? You mean the Eagle?

And yeah...best to take that "acquired" cargo to an anarchy system and sell it there.

How demanding is this game? I'm desperate to play it, but I only have an old AMD A6 laptop. I can play Evochrone Mercenary and X3 at respectable frame rates. Any chance this would run at a medium to low setting for me?

Ok, help me out, GAF. I'm trying to make money so I can move on from this starting Sidewinder. Trading is a pain because it only has four slots. I've tried going to Conflict Zones, but I can't seem to be able to choose a faction, so I can't earn money for kills.

Can anyone help me understand what I'm doing wrong? Or at least point me in the right direction to make some credits with my starter Sidewinder? Thanks!

I used this site http://www.oisltest.com/DM/BPC/ to pick trade routes. Also, check the bulletin board at each stop for the missions that want you to deliver one ton of cargo. Some of them pay 2-3k or more. That's all I did and it didn't take too long to get enough cash for a hauler.

So I took the plunge yesterday. Kinda new to space sims, I've only played X3, but I'm loving this game. I just bought a Hauler and I'm finally starting to make some decent money. I was a little worried I was going to hate it with my crappy Logitech joystick that I got for BF2 a long time ago, it's not ideal but it's working a lot better than expected.

I was pretty dead set on not spending more money on this game sense I already spent $75 for it. Then just a couple hours ago while walking to my car, I found $80! Now I'm looking at getting a HOTAS set up. Been seeing a lot of recommendations for the Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS. Was wondering if someone could comment on the general build quality of it? Does it have that cheap plastic feel or does it feel nice and solid with some weight to it? I can't find a unit at a store, so I can't see for myself before I buy. I don't like to buy cheap crappy stuff that will break, so if the T Flight HOTAS is cheap, then maybe I'll just wait a little while and get something nicer.

I would say it's pretty solid Plastic. It's not metal, but it's pretty good. I suggest you could check some video, but for now you can see mine :

t_flight.jpg

I do not use it like that, normally it's separated around my keyboard.

Must admit i torn between getting either the Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS or the X52 (standard), the T Flight can be had for like £35 which seems really cheap surely the X52 has to be the better stick? Ive learned in the past, you pay peanuts you get monkeys!!

Bought the game yesterday and it's amazing. I am going to be ordering a DK2 first thing next week.

What is a good joystick to get for this game? I don't want to spend a lot of money because it will only be for this game but I dont want some super crap one either. My budget for the stick is around $100-120.

There was an official stream today and reddit made a compilation of the answers to the questions they were asked during the stream

  • they saw the "sounds of planets" video that was linked here on reddit recently
  • comets will be in the game
  • can people own stations/captial ships? the game is supporting it but it will not be there initially, maybe later
  • regarding pvp: whats missing is consequences for shooting people. pvp is encouraged
  • group chat: will be focused on during the next weeks
  • oculus rift dev kit 2: we're still looking into it, needs some improvements
  • planetary landings: (the expansion). coming in stages. landing on moons might be first for example, more interactions later
  • imperial ships during beta: the beta area in space is nowhere near their empire, so maybe near the end of beta but not for sure
  • reputation & rankings: achievable with other activities other than killing people. might affect ability to dock at stations if you have bad reputation. they want consequences for your reputation
  • exploration stuff in beta: will be implemented soon(ish)
  • 120ly around sol: human space. after that only some stations can be found
  • no wormhole shortcuts will exist
  • what supercruise is missing among others: AI needs to use supercruise so its less empty
  • will the AI learn to dock properly: we certainly intend it to get better
  • are you worried that group mechanics will split the community? for game simulation it doesn't matter, every group affects the background simulation. we want to encourage people to play in "all" group, but don't want to block people that want to play on their own
  • the game plays in a single galaxy (gameplay wise) but is hosted in a cloud, i.e. multiple servers instead of a single one
  • there will be more content and features released during the beta phase
  • galaxy map: main thing will be adding a route planner, also the galaxy data needs to be finalized. then there will be an in-system map!
  • ED will stay more than playable without HOTAS
  • larger systems will have more than one station in them
  • there will be hidden stuff to find in the universe as a part of the exploration gameplay
  • engine upgrades, sacrificing parts in exchange for specilaizing your ship will come
  • ultimately people will be starting in different locations
  • overcrowded stations (not getting clearance to land) has to do with AI blocking pads atm
  • ideally they want more than 32 players per instance. but they need to balance it
  • exploration gameplay: finding data and finding planets/stations/whatever. being rewarded for that (credits?)
  • pirate ships will offer different bounties, the AI will have ranks too - correlation between the two
  • you will be able to disable small parts of the ship by shooting, e.g. the cargo hatch (already in the game)
  • will mission locations be less vague? depends. some are vague by design so you have to research and look for them. some will be easy
  • it will be possible to follow a friend out of supercruise soon
  • debris lasts only for the gameplay session
  • focus with weapons atm: defensive stuff, such as mines
  • there will be no third person view to actually PLAY in, but there might be other ways to get a look at your ship from the outside
  • will any ships have transparent floors? no.
  • wipe at the end of beta

I use a Thrustmaster T16000M and it works just fine. Think I paid $60 or so for it. Do still need to use keyboard as there are just so many commands needed, but that doesn't bother me.

If you can stretch a little further I've heard great things about Saitek X52 setup

wipe at the end of beta is awesome. Basically experiment out the ass and don't worry about any stats. You can try stupid shit without consequence now, essentially.

Thanks I will look into those.

When you are playing with a flight stick how do you control the strafing? (right stick on 360 controller)

Ok, I'm at this to buy the beta access...

One question, didn't really see it (maybe missed it): I don't want to buy a joystick/throttle pad right now, will I be able to enjoy it with keyboard and mouse?

How's PvP with keyboard and mouse?

I haven't tried it myself but the guys at rockpapershotgun said that it's way better with a gamepad. I use my DS4 and it's totally fine but I'll probably go for a HOTAS.

Oh didn't think of the pad, will try it out then, thx! ^^

Talking about HOTAS I've heard a lot of good things regarding CH ones, pretty sober looking, expensive, but very good material.

I haven't really tried this game myself, but some streamers I've been watching said that it's perfectly tolerable with mouse/keyboard.

I actually wish that trackballs were still a thing. I spent so many hours playing Descent and Freespace with the Logitech Marble FX.

Yah, they are the next step after the X-52 and X-55 of Saitek. I'd say that it's pretty much the top you can get for a HOTAS until you want to get a Thrustmaster Warthog, but that one seem to only be overkill.

Enjoying Elite though struggling with the flight control. Hopefully will improve with time.

Strange one this – has anyone else noticed that their web cam is turned on by Elite? Are we being spied on by the Federation.....

Elite also for some reason changes my microphone record levels from 90 down to 52

This is the stuff I'm really looking forward to. I just want to get a long range ship, a fuel scoop, and try to make it to the other end of the galaxy. Pirating/Trading isn't really my thing.

Yeah I'd love to take out a long range exploration vessel but I'm not sure there'd be much for us in terms of incentive and missions.

Edit: I was wrong. Additional info:

Exploration PT 1
Exploration PT 2

It's fine with kb/m, though I haven't come across any pvp.

I'm torn between it and the Thrustmaster T16000M.

With 120 LY human bubble around Sol, i really wonder how it'll be out there in the galaxy and what they are planning to not make things too boring (exploring 50 000+ LY without any encounter would be boring). I really hope its dense with alien races, maybe in the future a way to interact with them, maybe a bit RPG in the interactions (NPC interaction will come at some point), find alien weapon/ship technology.. :o

Well the factions are where I'd imagine organic events taking place. A player discovers a large resource somewhere on the borders of two factions and they'll move in to fight over it or set up shop etc. In terms of deep inside faction territory or unclaimed deep space? No idea. I'm not sure where they are in the balance of players seeking out events and events happening around the players.

Thanks I will look into those.

I used WASD for thrust forwards/left/back/right as the throttle on the stick is too far to reach with my thumb on the hand holding the stick. Works well enough for me. Stick does twist too, so I use that for yaw as well

Because Saitek just released the X-55 Rhino, The X-52 Pro is very close to your price range. It's currently $134.48 on Amazon

Edit: I have the X-55 Rhino and it's actually pretty awesome. If you don't mind spending $200, I would highly recommend it.

Do you find the USB cable that goes between the stick and the throttle to be way to short to be useful??

It isn't even long enough to fit on each side of my keyboard.

I got the thing for free so I can't complain too much but I really wish that cord was longer.

Is it a standard/mini/micro USB connection? You can always purchase a longer cord if it isn't a proprietary connection. They should be super cheap on Amazon.

Has anyone read anything about information runners or intel ships? I think SC is planning it but I'm not sure ED is.

They mentioned being a Spy as one of the possible "professions", so I'm sure they will expand upon the mechanics of how that would work. Hopefully they will include some recon ships that have active camouflage rather than just running silent to reduce your heat signature. If they include some kind of cloaking device, it would make things like spying and even pirating a bit more interesting.

I was about to upgrade my X45 (which is a little long in the tooth now) by buying a X55 Rhino, but they are completely sold out in Norway, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do now.. I kinda wanted to avoid buying a Warthog.. Man..

Yeah, I had a little trouble buying the X-55. I kept checking various sites, but it was always sold out. I got lucky one day on Amazon and made the purchase when there was only "1 left in stock" lol. There is a lot of demand for them.

The Warthog is definitely a great stick, but it doesn't have the ability to twist, so I would have to buy rudder pedals which would add another ~$200, and that's hard to justify when the HOTAS is already ~$500. I only wish the X-55 was heavier so that it doesn't slide around so easily, but the rubber grips on the bottom are fairly good at keeping the friction.

I didn't think about that.. Yeah, that's not going to happen.. Thanks for making it an easy decision.
