Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

You are badly handicapping yourself if you insist on sticking to Pitch & Yaw control instead of Elites traditional Pitch & Roll model, the Yaw rate is far far too slow to use it as a primary axis instead of Roll.

In fact, I was interested to read that yaw is deliberately nerfed to improve gameplay. I have to say, I think they're onto something and it feels just right.

Bit annoying if I have to spin around in a station or something, but it doesn't feel crippled.

Cobra MK III with lots of weapons. I'm tired of running.

Pfft. Viper with 4 x cannon man.

Had a cobra, but crashed into a pirate and didn't get the insurance option, so figured I'd try a viper instead.

500 top speed, 2 x class 4 hardpoints, 2 x class 2 hardpoints. Yes, the cannons shoot slow, but they destroy sideys/eagles in 2 shots (1 for the shields, 1 for the hull) and make short work of everything else too, including the two pirate cobras who ambushed me on LP-198.

If things do go to hell, you can just turn and run as NOTHING is catching you in a viper.

You guys really should try that setup - I haven't had a fight last more than about a minute with those guns. Currently saving for some military or mirrored panels.

Anyone running into an issue where your chaff launcher is always out of ammo? I haven't even fired off any chaff, yet it says it's out of ammo

Are you sure you don't have to actually fill it up first, from "Fuel and Munitions" in the Station Services?

(Just a guess, not owned one myself yet)

It showed 25/25 right after I bought it, and I've never used any and it's showing empty.
I hit the "resupply all" button in the rearming menu each time I refuel, yet the option to reload chaff has never been available to me, even at stations that sell chaff launchers. Tempted to just sell the stupid thing and maybe use a heatsink launcher as my anti-missile defence instead (not that anyone has survived long enough to send a missile my way yet :D)

How are you finding the Hauler for running? Personally I've turned of the single weapon and diverted all power to engines to increase max speed and boost. I figured I'm never going to actually fight anyone so why not? So far when I get jumped all I've seen is a brief blip in my scanner before I'm out of there using boost and then jumping back into supercruise.

Can't wait until I can play later - I figure 3 more decent runs in the Hauler and I'll have enough to get my Cobra and equip it decently enough to make the purchase sensible.

Just got it and am doing the same as you, diverting power to the engines. Seems to handle well enough with slightly less max power than the Sidewinder. The light leather interior finish does sometimes tend to make the instrumentation invisible when the stars shine straight into the cockpit, but only a minor issue.

Certainly making the loot a lot faster now :)

For anyone wanting to make some good money on rather short trips, I suggest making Coltan runs from Freeport (LP-936 I think, you can get there from Eranin) to Dahan. This run hasn't been taken advantage of much yet so it's still pretty worth it. I can make an 8k profit from doing runs in a hauler full of Coltan.

Also, as I'm rather new to flight sims, can someone explain to me why the pitch and roll is better than pitch and yaw? I currently use a controller (will pick up a HOTAS soon) and am wondering why roll is better than yaw for Elite.

Simply because in Elite the Yaw rate, i.e. the speed at which you turn via Yaw, is very very slow, compared to just Pitching and Rolling into position.

It is FD's opinion that this leads to more dogfighting style combat, whereas a Yaw based sim tends to turn into a 6DoF FPS rather than a dogfighter.

As others have said, that is a network thing. If you play in solo mode it is MUCH faster already.

I've only played in single player. And it takes 3-5 seconds every time.

It's anything but "seamless". Also, the stations themselves don't actually render when you're in fast travel mode.

Thanks. I just went and bought a Thrustmaster HOTAS so I don't really have to worry about not using yaw or pitch now.

So I've gotten used to flying with my HOTAS but actual combat is another story. I can maneuver just fine but actual targetting is a pain. I can't make the slight movements that I can make with a controller in order to target someone. Any tips?

Put Yaw on the X axis on the joystick, and Roll on the Twist(Z axis?)

You can't target someone? There is a "target next ship" and "target closest enemy" command you should map.

Already have that.

It's not "targetting" them that is the issue. It's lining up my shots that is the issue. Unless I am using something with lock on of course. But for stuff like pulse lasers I'm having difficulty lining up my shots.

Try leaving roll on the X axis and using the yaw on low roll setting. It's probably just a matter of unfamiliarity with using a flight stick, though. If you can make slight movements with a controller, you should be able to do it with a stick. They're fundamentally the same.

What stick are you using? Does it have a large deadzone?

Solo mode helps, but it still needs the online data and needs to make instances for you. That's where the "loading" comes from especially with stations. it will be a lot faster once the servers are sorted out properly.
A lot of things you jump into like nav beacons and such just instantly drop you.

This has helped me the most so far. I might switch roll back to twist though. I'm sure it's just the unfamiliarity . I seem to be getting better with more practice. Thank goodness for the scenarios.

Thrustmaster T Flight. Dead zone doesn't seem to be an issue. Resistance was at first but I turned that down and now it's better.

When im trying to plot a route, how can i acces systems that arent connected? lets say a big piece in the middle is connected with almost everything, but some systems just have 2 lines to eachother. How can i get there?

Does your HOTAS twist to simulate rudders? The best method I found was to roll onto your target then use the twisting motion for fine adjustment. With proper rudders, I'd say flip the process - steer your yaw onto the target then use your rotation for fine adjustment.

You'll need a ship with longer jump range to reach them. The lines only show you jumps you can make in your current ship with your current payload (including armor, weapons, etc).

I hope the FSD is one of the things we can upgrade in the full game.

Ah thanks, i feared as much....now i have invested in some cargo that i cant deliver with my current ship. Was saving for a hauler, but now im in the boat for 4k loss :(

You can move the slider at the bottom of the navigation panel to see how much weight you need to lose to be able to make the jump. Sometimes it's only one item or so that you need to dump to be able to make it.

The "download" is nothing, it's just a launcher. The folder after install is around 2GB or so.

How much total space is Elite Dangerous taking up so far?

I can imagine with assets and everything they could top it at just 3Gigs with optimization/more smart procedural stuff.Too many PC games these days are wasteful on HDD space and resources (*cough*Payday 2 & the MGR port*cough*).

It's around 2.2GB right now. No idea how many more assets the final game will have. If it's double or even triple the size now, that's still not a very big game, considering other games in this day and age.

So what is everyone's setup looking like in terms of desk orientation? I've currently got my HOTAS sticks set above my desk, but its making the experience a bit awkward with the controls being so high above. I've looked at buying a new desk and can't really find a suitable low-platform desk and wondering what others are looking at.

Holy crap, they're even more optimized than I thought initially! I could've sworn the size of E:D was 6 Gigs.

In any case, I dare them to shrink this game down even further to 1 GB. That should put all the major AAA publishers on PC to shame. (Alright, that's unfair. Still, I hope they manage to keep doing smarter and smarter optimizations. Most PC developers these days are too lazy to do that, and would rather compensate by demanding the end user for a)higher specs on their PC b)more disk space. )

I love the fact that these guys are restraining themselves form following the poor mores of the industry,

I have been having a great time with Elite Dangerous now that I have my DK2 and Saitek X52 pro in.

We should get a GAF group together to do some flying, fighting, and so forth.

It is such an amazing game so far.

I've been looking at this and Star Citizen. Is this the game to get? I'm very new to this genre.

They'll be fundamentally different in how they approach space sim genre. Elite is going for sandbox in a 400 billion star system galaxy, each planets having their gravity & orbits around the star, along with seamless transition from space to planetary landing and then explore planets in the future. Star citizen is going for the Wing commander/X-wing type of campaign, small universe, "zones", static celestial bodies, most likely cut-scene with loading for planetary landings.

But do you want to play in 2014 or 2018 ?

So I want to buy this. It costs 60$ right? What do I need to know about the game? Can I lose my ship like in Star Citizen?

If your ship is destroyed you get two options - revert to starter ship for free or for a fee rebuy the ship you lost plus equipped gear. Currently the fee is small next to the original cost. Any cargo you were carrying is gone though.

You can also own multiple ships (not sure if it's in the Beta yet I think I saw it was but haven't tried it yet).

You cannot have multiple ships currently. You can however sell yours and buy a new one. You will receive what you put into the ship.
