Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

In the final game, when there'll be bigger haulers than in the beta now, you'll probably need to hire a bodyguard, im not kidding. It makes sense though. Pirates in space is a given for any sci-fi.

Oh God, I always loved Jumpgate because of stuff like this, and kept saying "imagine if this was Elite". Happening intensifies.

Peek of the week, the Viper MkIII (or type88?) Typical federation aesthetics but its quite pleasing to the eyes, looks a lot more like a fighter than the sidewinder & cobra.

Thinking about fuel, a race to the galaxic center will be quite hard till there's fuel refilling from gas giants. In Elite's world the human's reach is quite small, you wont see a space station or fuel refill station in every solar systems, and really unlikely towards the center where its unexplored.

I think it could actually also be very lucrative for someone to start a fuel service company. Travelling to give fuel to players in a hurry or pirates with heavy bounties that cant approach stations anymore... hmmmm

Can anyone comment on whether hauling and trading in ED induces the same zen-like feeling of hauling and delivering cargo in Euro Truck Simulator? Or are you just pressing the warp button and waiting till you arrive at the starport?

Ending up grabbing the retail game and the Lifetime pass. I guess I'll see you guys when the game comes out. :)

Always wished I could fly a Viper in Elite, glad I got that chance in the sequels. Good to see it carried on here. Hope the panther clipper makes it also

Um.. It's very far from Euro Truck Simulator. This isn't a game where you can relax. We've already had a few gaffers getting their shit destroyed outside of spaceports. Pirates are plenty and you'll have to play smart or else you will die.

Also, refrain from suicide trading (leaving no capital for mistakes). Everything is deadly.

I lost 80k of cargo after I forgot to ask for clearance, entered dock, and then panicked and tried to back out (against port), losing my shields, panicked again and tried to log out - only for the rotation of the station to clip my ship blowing it up and sending dozen progenitor cells flying every where in the station.

I stopped playing after that. :P

There likely has to be some systems in place to stop that from happening. Otherwise no one will be able to do anything.

There will be anti-piracy measures put into effect once standard beta starts along with i think extending the "no fire-zone" around space ports.

Main thing really is that people will just have to be smart in trading. For example, the anarchy system LP-98132 is a haven for piracy and it's a person's choice if they want to trade there.

Smart trading only gets you so far. Today I had an Anaconda camping the Aulin -> Eranin route just locking and firing missiles. Didn't give a fuck about loot, just wanted to grief some low class ships. Those two systems are about as secure as it gets.

I will say that there's always a way out of a situation like that it just takes awareness and practice. Unless they add some sort of scramble module to completely disable your jump capabilities or something to blockade you can always get out.

Welp, i seem to have found a way to hunt black holes in the galaxy map, HD 18326, HD 14947 for example. It seems that when you look around and see a faint glow that you cant target (unlike stars), try to get closer and closer until you eventually can, so far maybe im lucky but i found 2. There must be a LOT of them in Elite's galaxy o_o

wait. is this game online only? is there no way to play solo?

There absolutely is a single player. At the moment there's just combat scenarios for SP. When the game does live the same persistent universe is online and off and you can choose to opt in or not.

Pretty sure in the final game they'll add more counter-measures and yeah, it's pretty easy to get away from pirates and such. Just gotta jump as soon as you can and watch out for your temps.

Can anyone suggest a decent mid tier joystick that would allow to play Elite well without much manual tinkering? Because i might be doing everything wrong I admit, but when I compare the way my ship turns compared to other people on YouTube, mine turns much slower, I guess playing with the mouse prohibits the speed. Just guessing. As I said I might be doing it all wrong. Thanks.

I'd recommend either of these depending on what you're looking for:

Thrustmaster T-16000M

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X

Thrustmaster T-Flight Stick X

Personally I think you really need some kind of HOTAS for this because of how many control functions are there.

As for turning pay attention to the blue portion of your throttle display. Keeping your thrust in that section maximizes your maneuverability.

Agree, if you need a Flight Stick buy an hotas, in ED is REALLY useful. I have the Flight Stick X, no Hotas, and damn...too many hotkeys. Fortunately I find a good setup for an hybrid cloche+Keyboard setup, with that I don't need to switch to the mouse for any reason. *_*

Thanks, I will look around Latvian shops to see if any of these are available.

Hmm they all seem to be the same price more or less, 40 - 50 EUR. Hota looks to be the best I guess.

Finally made my way to a Cobra MK III. Not a fan of the design but I finally feel like I can defend myself while trading now. Hopefully there's a proper smuggling ship somewhere in the future updates with a bigger emphasis on speed rather than hardpoints.

And has good fuel economy! ;)

Amen.

Yo, real talk. This randomized outfitting shit needs to go. Tie it to the system type. Anything but what's in the game right now. Infuriating. Going to be even worse when I'm wasting fuel travelling to stations I can't even be sure are going to have useful gear.

Anyone here heard of the Roccat Power Grid?

Here's a description.

ROCCAT™ Power-Grid™ is an advanced and fully-customizable remote control for your PC. It lets you connect to, monitor, and control your PC and games directly from your smartphone – and all without having to leave the action. Best of all: it’s totally free to get started.

They have some good layouts for Elite especially for those who may only have a joystick or a HOTAS system with limited buttons. Pretty useful overall. Unfortunately, can't see using it much with the DK2 for obvious reasons.

Here's a few examples of layouts people have come up with.

That's brilliant, going to try running with that on my Nexus 7 2013.

I've yet to try it out. Since I have the X55 I'm not exactly short of buttons, but I want to see if I could use it to be more efficient.

How do i make my first money ? Can i shoot some stones somewhere and mine ? How do i start acquiring some capital, this is quite overwhelming at the start,.

Mining is not in the game yet.

You have multiple ways:

1) Trade runs. You only have 4 cargo slots,so you can't carry a lot,but you can gradually make money and buy more expensive cargo that gives more profit. This is a relatively simple and easy way to make money, but not super quick.

2) Go after NPCs with bounties/wanted status. Usually you will find these guys at "resource extraction points" or "unidentified signals". With your one starting laser you should try and stick to taking out enemy sidewinders, they are doable if you can fly decently well. You CAN take out Cobra MK3s but it takes ages and is quite hard.

3) Go to the Dahan or Eranin system and enter a "conflict zone". Once there, fights should already be going on or will start soon between the Federation and the Erani/Dahan forces. Check out who has the upper hand, then go to your right display panel - functions - "choose faction" and choose the one you want to fight for. If you manage to get the last hit on any ships, you get paid for the kill.

That's pretty much it!

If you want to fight better, get a second laser (2200credits) ASAP and make money from there. I just traded in my second laser for a multigun cause they tear through hulls like paper.

Thanks, should i go for the gymbaled weapons, those are the tracking lasers ?

Go to a Federal Distress Signal or I would suggest, a conflict zone that is low intensity. Pick a side, I suggest (Not Federation) and start taking down ships. In the beginning, a sidewinder will not make much trading so better to just go hunting. You'll also improve your combat skills as well.

Anyway, someone posted this on the E:D forums. Kinda makes me worried about SC a bit.

I wanted to post this on the SC forums but don't want to upset people and be labeled a troll. So I'm going to vent here... apologies in advance.

I just watched the latest "Around the 'Verse" and it has nearly destroyed any last hopes that I held for the game. Particularly the interview with the programmer.

First he says that 1:100 scale is likely the maximum scale in terms of planet size. And he doesn't exactly sound confident that even this crippled vision is obtainable. I don't play a SIM to have massively down-scaled assets. Imagine if you bought a racing sim but they replaced all the cars with RC replicas.

I was holding out hope for procedural generation in the future of SC (post launch) to help with the exploration aspect but it is seemingly increasingly clear that Cry-Engine can't even cope with their current, pretty modest, requirements. That stretch goal is looking like a promise waiting to be broken.

Then confirmation that there will be no 'heavenly motion'. This was looking shaky but to hear it from the horses mouth still burns. I wonder if they will even have a day night cycle in their planet-side locations linked to planetary rotation. (The planets will rotate right, even if they don't orbit?)

They drop these two bombshells as if it's nothing. Then its "hey there's a new ship in the store, check out some concept art. Grab it while it's hot." Seriously, the nerve. I was just flabbergasted.

Depends, are you good at hitting with the fixed ones?
The fixed do more damage per hit and they do have very small tracking. I never needed the gimballed personally, I feel those ar emore for slower/bigger ships.

Honestly, just go with what YOU want and remember that the 29th will wipe your progress anyway, so experiment as much as you can.

The single player missions give you different weapons to try out!

Yeah thanks for all you guys suggestions, got 3 kills in with the regular laser, once i get that Hotas it should be much easier. Used to play various flight games when i was younger, still have an old Microsoft sidewinder somewhere but not sure if it would work at all, it should be 10 years old by now.

Which HOTAS did you get?

The cheap and simple one Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X, cant really shell out much more for a thing like this at the moment.

I got the exact same one. It's awesome and for that price works absolutely fantastic.
I would advise you to try and get some double sided tape or something or some rubber stuff you can put underneath it to better attach it to the desk. Or maybe attach a weight, haha.

Alright will do, purchased it from the German amazon, how the times have changed, a few years back they would not ship anything bigger than a book here(Latvia). I hope it arrives safely.

Last night i made a good 15 kills in the high conflict zone of eranin with only 1% hull left. It finished with me crashing into a cobra, we both died (he had 1% no shield), sadly i didnt get the credit for killing him :(

It pays a lot to play there. When you upgrade your weapons you have an easier chance of having the last shot to kill too. I wish i had enough monies for a railgun, these things are the space shotgun equivalent.

I feel the railguns will be heavily nerfed or changed. They are way too good and make other weapons redundant.

Ohhh ive been waiting for this game since Frontier: Elite II, waiting for the release and buy a new computer and a descent joystick.

Honestly, I don't feel like 1:1 planets are a necessary or even desirable feature.

I mean, if you've used Outterra, you'll understand what I mean - that's a non-game that provides a google map interpretation of the planet... but even as rich and varied as our planet is, the impression you get from floating around a planet with so much fauna and rolling hills and ocean... is that it just blends together. Hardly any unique features of note.

I prefer a much shrunken map that has a much better density of interesting features compared to flats and plains and gentle forests and hills. Assuming we can land and explore in some future expansion.

Only sim heads that care about the bullet point of 1:1 rather than the practical aspect of the experience could get angry about 1:100 scale planets (which is still way too huge IMO).

OTOH, been able to relate the heavens skybox to the planet you're actually on is pretty cool.

Peek of the week, the Viper MkIII (or type88?) Typical federation aesthetics but its quite pleasing to the eyes, looks a lot more like a fighter than the sidewinder & cobra.

After seeing this model, I was inspired to redesign the Imperial Courier. Not quite liking the way their sketch ended up looking - kinda lost too many elements to retain the sleeker more aggressive feel of the original. This one is basically the same silhouette as the original plus sketchy surfacing details to bring it into a more modern age.

What do you guys think? Worth putting more work into it? Was thinking about modeling it in 3D... but that's hard work man!

Will there ever be a free beta?

Nope. I guess Gamma technically will count since you'll be getting it with the standard game.

If you watch the video, it doesn't only concern the size of the planets, but the distance between planets themselves. They mention the example of the distance between Earth and Pluto being 1:100 scale.

Only thing is that's not even a guarantee with SC clearly having trouble moving to double bit precision. 1:100 is the most they can hope for in terms of scale.

And I feel like for some, yes, it's just another bullet point. But for others like me, it just says a lot about what Frontier has already accomplished this early on.

I don't want to keep on riling on SC, but all they have done so far is a broken AC with a broken flight model that allows people to turret. It's basically an FPS in space. The recent planetside module they demo'd seem no farther than the video they showed last year. It was basically a diorama with Cry Engine models in T-Poses.

The concerns are valid when the big monumental task ahead of them is transferring to double bit precision that'll practically wipe all their current work so far and all they keep on talking about is the next shiny ship that people can buy.

It's no coincidence that they announced the Gladius when they're daily pledge numbers hit an all-time low.

I'm still personally hoping they're able to fulfill on the promises they've made because what it's aiming to do is incredible and something I want to experience. I'm just wondering though if they've bit off more than they can chew and will have to scale back on all their promises.

I can't help but harker back to Freelancer where Chris Roberts made all these amazing promises that he eventually had to scale way back.

My friend and I tried for about 1 hour to play together yesterday, but it just didn't work even once. We never saw eachother and always ended up in different instances, even after making sure we were on the same server in the main menu.

Gotta wait till standard beta and grouping I guess :(
