Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Ok I don't get how to scan my environment to pick stuff up with cargo scoop.

I don't see the blue cargo box on the left side when cargo scoop is deployed, I am doing something wrong?

If the cargo scoop is deployed and you're not flying a gazillion kph, it should automatically show up as you approach some cargo head-on

Canister target? :P

Same method as you target friendly and enemy ships? You do that right? Target the cargo canister. In the left panel menu if you dont want to find the buttons to cycle between them. If you dont target them you wont have the scoop align "mini-game".

I can't remember if cargo appears in the contacts list but it shouldn't matter. There's a keyboard command for targeting the object in the center of your reticle. Get it in your sights and press the button, then approach and see if the cargo computer starts working.

So it will only work if I am targeting something? Well, I'm gonna try it out.

Question, I dabbled in the online for the first time but when I tried to dock in Azeban City I was told to fuck off, was it the case that it was full or what?

I hear that owning a joystick is basically required for this, is that true? I really don't want a return to those days when all the cool games required a joystick (Star Wars and flight sims I'm looking at you).

Can you get away with using a gamepad?

Be a bit more specific... :P

Did it give you some sort of error when you requested docking? What did it say?

Either it timed out (beta is beta, so I didn't care about that) or it was denied, which makes me think it must have been full or something, it wasn't something I experienced solo.

I tried to play it with K/M & my Xbox360 controller and couldn't get warm with it. Bought a Saitek x52 Pro only for this game and it was totally worth it!

The difference is just huge. The controls aren't just way better, the game makes so much more fun with it.

I've been using the gamepad and you can get by. It's obviously not as good as with a HOTAS with a ton of controls to map everything to, but you can probably make do for the most part. There's always gonna be that chance you come up against a stick user who can wipe the floor with you, but that could happen to you with a stick or pad. I will say I find M+K unbearable though.

Edit: I should probably clarify that I have my Saitek X52Pro coming through soon, so while the gamepad works you will still wish you had a stick.

I've been playing with a controller, DS3, and I've found it to be perfectly competent. Bear in mind this is my first space sim though, plus I really want to give a joystick/HOTAS a go, but kinda putting it off due to lack of money. Plus, even when using the DS3, I still need to use my keyboard from time to time to do some things, but it's not really fucked me over yet.

Purchased this to play with my DK2 and figured might as well go all out and got a HOTAS setup with a T1600 and used CH pro throttle. Turns out the throttle was broken but luckily I got a refund.

I Tried playing it with a just the T1600 and the DK2 and it's been a hassle to get the DK2 working properly, any way to minimize the issue with blacks? It's also a hassle to get the T1600 set up properly so far. I'll give it a go later on today and hopefully I work out all my kinks, I also ordered a new throttle.

Yes, you can.

However, due to the amount of commands that are useful, you may need to still have a keyboard handy, or many people have voice commands set up for the game. The best experience with the game is with a HOTAS, but it's certainly not required. Just be prepared to spend a bit of time getting it set up how you like it.

I started with using the ds4 and am now using the x55. I found that I can do just as well with the ds4. By using the face buttons as modifiers for all other buttons, you can use the ds4 for all of your important flight controls.

I had my left stick for pitch/yaw, right stick for thrust vectoring, and top shoulder buttons for throttle. I also had throttle settings for 15% increments and yaw on roll was turned on. It feel that the ds4 had an advantage by being easily able to use analog thrust vectoring while in combat. I am unable to to map this to my liking on the x55.

Just got this last night and it will be a while before I can grab a flight stick. Using a 360 pad at the moment..

So Im trying to figure out how do I disengage supercruise? Cant seem to figure out what button it is.

I don't think it's mapped to the controller by default. I stuck it on the left stick click.

Big write-up about exploring. Check it out.

Pretty cool concept, I'd say. The only thing that I found weird were the last lines...
Perversely, The Federation and Empire do not share this data with each other – indeed they are competitive about it. Taking such information to the Federation earns the player a good reputation with them, but the parallel is true of the Empire. Unscrupulous players have taken the information to both, but woe betides the player who is discovered doing this – which can happen if both mega-powers send a research team to investigate!

I guess this is one of those "gameplay comes first" decisions which I almost always support, but it just seems bizarre how either faction could:
A) fail to always have the other factions map updated, since they both sell their maps to any random explorer.
B) find a research team from the other faction and assume whoever sold the map double crossed them, instead of being the work of different explorers.

I'm fairly new to the game, just jumped in a few weeks ago after watching only a handful of videos but is there more background on this exploring stuff?

Is exploring going to be a one time per system thing?
Are our maps going to be incomplete and as players explore we see more by buying an expanded map?

Seems to be that way. We'll all start in the same "known" cluster of stars and start expanding from there. Information will create expand the knowledge present in the galaxy map, new trade routes, mining information for other players, etc.

Well, going by that newsletter it would seem like yes, and yes.

Has anyone that doesn't normally like space combat played this?
I normally don't enjoy space combat but Elite Dangerous looks awesome awesome especially since it uses Oculus.

Do you plan on playing with the DK2? If you don't like space combat at all, don't get it. Especially at 75 bucks. But if you enjoy shipping games where pirates may jump you and take all of your credits, then go for it.

Honestly though, you have to do it really bad to get killed by some random pirates :P

Anyway, when is Beta 2 releasing, and what does it include?
Oh and also... the flag patterns are so ugly for some countries... look at this:

viper_flag_spain.jpg

Terrible... the yellow just looks ugly.

And compare it to this:

viper_flag_uk.jpg

The colors and the design fit it so much better it's not even funny :(

Oh well, either way I'll probably wait for other designs, the country flag designs always seemed way too tacky to me.

Yes I will be playing it on DK2. I enjoyed Star Citizen's space combat a little. Is this better in terms of combat mechanics?

I've never really enjoyed space sims before this game. The closest experience I've got to this game is playing Descent 1 & 2 way back in the day.

The combat in this game is well thought out, and while it makes sacrifices on the "Sim" side of things, the dogfighting is really fun once you get the hang of it.

Plus everything about the game looks and sounds so good. It's a joy to play just flying around exploring systems.

EDIT: I haven't personally played Star Citizen yet, but the current state of dogfighting in that game looks like a complete mess compared to Elite.

Nobody knows when it is releasing. I actually expected it for this week but it seems FD was not ready.

What is generally expected of beta 2 in the official forums is this

Engine upgrades
Energy bank upgrades
Booster upgrades
News ships
More space
Mines/EMP/Energy bombs
Mining
Creditors for insurance excess
Player interdiction
Outposts
Gas giants with procedural atmosphere
Graphical/UI improvements
Exploration system
New mission types (hopefully better system too)

But its all unknown. FD is really not talking much about beta 2.0

Commander Fasty reporting in if you want to add me to that list.

Although I won't be playing again at least until the next beta arrives most likely

I hope they update soon :)

How demanding is this game really? I know what the official site says, but like, do you really need a quad core CPU? Seems a bit high. It's not like there's a TON going on most of the time from what I've seen. Could I run it with a dual core i5 @ 2.3 GHz and a half decent GPU from 2011?

It's a shame there's no demo, or at least a benchmark. I realize the game is still in beta, but yeah. Don't wanna pay for something I can't run.

"How demanding is this game really? I know what the official site says, but like, do you really need a quad core CPU? Seems a bit high."

Quad Core CPUs have been the minimum for relatively medium graphic intensive games for some time now. I definitely don't feel comfortable recommending it to someone on a 2.3ghz dual core processor.
