Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

After watching Guardians of the Galaxy, I wish that Elite had a music player in-game that would play the music in two modes, normal mode and "old radio" mode that plays the music like it were playing off some radio taken from some junkyard or something.

And play this while just flying around:

I don't think it'd be hard to include (though it would be way down on the to-do list) and they could just make it so it reads your music folder or whatever path you tell it on the options menu.

That would be sweet. Should be like it is in Euro Truck Simulator 2 where you can play your own music or plug in an internet music stream!

That would be great. Even better if someone online (or hell, Frontier) decided to record the GalNet news and have them play on an Elite news radio mixed with music and other stuff, all playing off your old stereo on the sidewinder :_)

I think that might be asking too much, lol. It reminds me of the GTA radio stations with their own stuff playing. Those things mixed with the galnet news and random music all coming off some radio that Frontier or some user keeps up to date would be incredible.
It would need a professional (or at least professional-sounding) voice actor though, to make it feels like it's the real news.

Hah, now that would be freakin sweet. I play ETS2 sometimes just for an excuse to listen to music and podcasts.

Not only today, since I started to play the beta 2. I get always stuck in hyperspace & supercruise.

I've had some issues too, but mainly with cartographics in various ways.

My biggest issue in general has been a slight delay when loading in planets in supercruise.. When using the DK2 it can be extremely uncomfortable at times..

You know, that's not out of the realms of possibility. I remember really early on in the Kickstarter, David Braben mentioned in an interview that they had been looking into speech synthesisers for NPCs. Should mention it in the beta forums :)

Going to buy this weekend, anyone here using Voice Attack? Checked it out on youtube and seems pretty awesome.

Have not used it BUT, I asked if it was worth it and it basically comes down to the keyboard being faster for 'quick' stuff (or your preferred controller) but it's pretty slick for stuff like automating docking requests and such (which can also be bound using a macro to some controllers).

I'll probably pick it up closer in a bit but I'm getting used to my X55 so once I utilize all those buttons I'll see if there's a need for VA.

Most people that use it really like it though, kind of like the iPad button assignments, it's not 'needed', but it can be helpful.

I'm sure some actual users will chime in that have the program though, more helpful than this!

I have a small problem in Elite. Ship is 100% intact but I'm running out of oxygen after 2 minutes of flying around:

I can't control the ship anymore when this appears. No power at all. Any solution?

Let me guess... Eagle? They have a very small power plant, once you start adding stuff, it can't handle the load.

Fiddle with your power management on the right console, turn off things that aren't needed and set up priorities for the system to automatically handle things.

It's been nearly essential for me. I have the X52 and some of the switches on it aren't accessible without moving my throttle hand so I've bound a ton to VA.

Power distribution - This is the biggest gain for me. Able to instantly switch distribution to engines or weapons without fumbling with a hat.
Landing Gear
Lights
Galaxy Map
Silent Running/Heatsink deployment as one command, return from silent running as another
Scan/sensor range
Docking request

Never put life support as a low priority in your power management. Like jedi said, some ships have very small powerplants and depending on the modules you installed or weapons you bought, you're draining too much power.

These are the things I would totally use it for. And this video's first 15 seconds kind of sells it for me.

Haha, I never knew that!

I have an X52 and all the bolded ones are just one switch/button away!

So I caved and bought my way into the Beta, played for only an hour last night and I couldn't be happier. I thought the game would be more complex (was expecting something like DCS A10 Warthog) but it took about 20 minutes to bind most functions to my CH setup and I still have some buttons left over. Can't wait to try it out more.

Nice yea figured could be nice for things like that. Might buy the game tonight, how big is the download? Also don't have a joystick atm, generally which is superior kb/m or controller? Figured kb/m

Well, 1.5 hours later and I think I have my X55 buttons configured correctly. Had some cheat sheets and will edit them in and print them later.

Not sure about the download. It didn't take me long to be up and running. My EDLaunch folder I created is like 2.5 Gb.

I tried KB/M, Controller, now X55. Obvious which one is better but I'd use controller/KB combination unless you're good with the mouse. I hated playing like that. There are some cheap joysticks and they add a ton of enjoyment for a little cost.

Yeah it's an Eagle, the problem occured since I bought a 3rd lasercannon.

Didn't know you could set priorities in this menu.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna check this.

Don't know if this question already came up:

Is anyone playing with mouse/keyboard instead of a joystick? Is it any fun?

I remember playing Mech Warrior and Wing Commander with a joystick, but I also remember switching from m/k to joystick to m/k due to imprecise joystick controls. Maybe joysticks are way better now (I had a MS FF Sidewinder I think).

Anyways, is it any fun without a joystick?

Got my replacement X55 today after waiting for a month - the plate immediately got stuck on the lightest spring. It was a bit better than the last one, that one got stuck on the 2nd lightest spring, this didn't appear to do that. There was loads of visible lubricant around the bottom where the last one didn't have any.

Been missing out completely on this game and my Rift is sitting idle because of that POS. Thinking refund -> CH Pro Throttle + T16000M.

Is this game worth the 75$, or am I better off waiting for the game to release? I'm waiting on Star Citizen, but that's gonna be a long ways down the line still. Is it still fun without an Occulus Rift?

Same question. I have money and impulse control issues...is it worth it?

I've pledged to Star Citizen, but I'm very keen to play something in the meantime. Is there depth to the gameplay, or will I just be lining up targets in my crosshairs then holding down left-click until dead?

Haha same boat. Honestly I could go ahead and throw money at a Rift and 75$ for the game, but i'd like to hold out for a consumer rift and not spend my money if it's just more Star Citizen arena.

Well, the game is supposed to be released by the end of 2014, can you wait till then? Its basically 25$ to have early access. Its very fun even with a tons of features missing. Beta 3 by the end of october should add a nice layer of playability too.

Their ship designs just get better and better.

Not quite sure how that ship fits in the line-up just yet.

It's a passenger ship.

I'd wait for the final version at this point. Paying more for a lesser version of the game is only worth it if you wish to help fund the game. There's really no other reason to pay more for something that is far from being complete. Impatience was another "good" reason I guess, but now we're almost there... I say wait a while. You'll have a much better experience.

The voice of reason. I need you every time I open my wallet.

Given the scope of the game, I wonder if they'll reach their target date. I read that they're planning on having land gameplay too? If that's true, I can foresee a delay, with the beta being extended.

Atmospheric re-entry, planet landing/walking/hunting, walk around ships, hijack other ships, multi-crew, etc are planned in 2015 through expansions.

Braben really wants to make sure that planet exploration wont be dull. The algorithms to make that happen probably will take some time and there's no reasons to hold up the already near complete space side of ED while they explore solutions for planet cities/forests/wild life. Walking around ships will probably come first as they are already made with that in mind, walking around stations afterwards, early planetary landings on rocky planets and eventually atmospheric re-entry on gas giants, explore cities/forests etc. Its an ambitious game to make all this happen with 400 billion solar systems. But considering it has been 20 years since they did this kind of tech in frontier elite II, im pretty sure that with today's computing power, Braben will find a way to blow us away.

Concept arts show what kind of artistic design they are aiming at for these additions.

Seeing as they are pretty much spot on with the concept arts so far, its very exciting :o

The expansions sound really exciting and I'm glad they're not rushing into them. Having said that the way these betas are being received I get the impression a delay for the first release will slip into Q1 2015, it just seems so much to do in a couple of months.

The Orca looks great, if perhaps a little bit too modern. The original ships feel more like something from Star Wars, whereas this one feels like something from a more utopian future, kinda like what you'd see in some of the Syd Mead concept art pieces.

I forgive the design in that it's a passenger liner, probably a very high-class one (a la Concorde), and therefore isn't built like the utilitarian ships that we've been flying around in.

Isn't the Orca an Imperial ship? There's supposed to be a big difference in design between the Empire and the Federation, if I recall.

Based off some wiki page, it seems to be part of no alliance at all. The company making it is, as the image says, Saud Kruger. I checked a bit for that name and it seems like they might be the guys making all the cool modern ships in the Elite world.

Finally got around to buying the beta, having waited for this game since Elite on the Commodore 64. While my machine is pretty bad, the game performs amazingly well.

As for the experience...woooooooooooow. It is just so fucking good. I just want to go back in. The closest feeling I can compare with is the vanilla WOW launch, having played the beta previously. Holy shit this game is good.

Man, if my framerate microstutter doesn't go away in the next beta, I think I might reformat. I need to play this. In VR. Now now now.

I been watching this thread with great interest for months, and recently I folded and ordered a 4k monitor, a new gfx card and the X52 joystick.
I used to love Elite to bits on the C64 and Amiga, and it got me into a many years stint with Eve Online (now over). Time to find a new type of crack in this game now :)
