The question is, why did people think it was removed, and how could people even tell that it was removed if it was removed?
After publication of this story, Twitter head of trust and safety Ella Irwin told Reuters in an email that "we have been fixing and revamping our prompts. They were just temporarily removed while we do that."
"We expect to have them back up next week," she said.
This is one of those situations where Elon might be able to plausibly say what he said because it came back up by the time he said it…but the news article could’ve been correct as of time of publication. If that’s what happened, it’s a pretty classic gaslighting tactic. The original report has an on-record comment from Twitter themselves confirming it was down. I'm surprised Musk is refuting it...
Exclusive: Twitter removes suicide prevention feature, says it's under revamp
Twitter Inc removed a feature in the past few days that promoted suicide prevention hotlines and other safety resources to users looking up certain content, according to two people familiar with the matter who said it was ordered by new owner Elon Musk.www.reuters.com
Ella Irwin is probably going to be looking for a job soon.

Lol..Just gone up on Reddit:
Twitter Data Breach +400 million users | BreachForums
Hello dear breached usersI'm selling data of +400 million unique twitter users that was scraped via...breached.vc
Twitter or Elon Musk if you are reading this you are already risking a GDPR fine over 5.4m breach imaging the fine of 400m users breach source
Your best option to avoid paying $276 million USD in GDPR breach fines like facebook did (due to 533m users being scraped) is to buy this data exclusively,
Yeah, just saw this. Not good.
I think the original breach was prior to Musk but it's now his problem to resolve.
Quote from the 'seller':
Probably shouldn't have fired everyone, and put a target on his back. Welp, live and learn I suppose.
makes no difference they all used the same known exploit. all of this data was scraped prior to him purchasing twitter. these are all just separately saved dumps script kiddies have been sitting on.

That makes no sense, unless you're saying more hands to develop a time machine. This was fixed and occured during the period when Twitter had the most employees.Should have patched faster. Many hands make light work, and all that.

the literal timeline of the report/fix/disclosure is in the link.Embargoed vulnerabilities are known to the company before the public, before "script kiddies" get a hold of it. Seems someone was asleep at the wheel and that's not getting better everyday that passes without the right talent in place.
Anyone with a Twitter account want to experiment with this?
Twitter's response:
Yeah there doesnt seem to be any R&D, just development. The research, spec, design stage is all gone. QA seems to be scared to bring up issues too. They are basically coding on the go over the whims of their client who happens to be their owner, and that’s never a good idea. This shows you what a fool Elon Musk is. He only wants speed, and doesn’t think about features deeper than what they are on the surface level.
Elon does not understand requirements gathering, which would have been useful for views. He wanted this feature for mostly himself, so when he saw that he looked at a tweet and the view count went up, he considered it a success. They only did superficial level testing.
In twitters implementation you don’t even have to read the tweet to generate a view, you just have to scroll over it on your timeline.
They try to use the excuse of “we shipped this fast” but really they are incompetent. They are using users for testing and feedback because they are too incompetent to design and release a working feature.
This is why every feature or improvement they make ends up being trash.
Yeah, I mean Elon has himself said he wants the ability to make quick decisions & implement and work out the bugs or drop it entirely based on feedback. I actually don't disagree with the idea or intent. Hell, at my work we push for adaptability so we can get to market ASAP. If R&D takes 2+ years, you're going to get beat out by small start-ups or hyper talented individuals. The issue is that there seems to be a lot ideas thrown out without any discussion of potential consequences. This makes sense in a brainstorming sessions (to help keep creative ideas flowing). After the brainstorming though, there needs to be a critical review. This shows you what a fool Elon Musk is. All quiet on the Elon front but I did see this morning some Toots (lol) from the Elon Jet Tracker guy:

Attached: 1 image The perfect storm Musk is hoping for in the flight tracking world may be coming… Facts we know - The Saudi Arabians own a large stake in Twitter - The Saudi Arabians also don’t like flight tracking, they’ve contacted ADSBExchange to request to be blocked and offered money...mastodon.socialJack Sweeney (@JxckS@mastodon.social)
Based off of facts I see here and other information I can not share as of yet. I am very confident at the very least the Saudis are involved with future developments and possibly Musk too. Given the stance we know Elon has on my tracking I wouldn’t be surprised. If you had owned something that...mastodon.social

Yeah, exactly. I think it's easy to dunk on things when they don't work and there is something positive to be said about Musk being willing to publicly own the failures. We only really learn from our mistakes.
There's plenty to dislike about Musk. but he's not all bad or all evil. I still believe Twitter has a strong chance to recover from the bad PR. Musk too. As I said before, some philanthropy and a few charitable donations and he's back in good graces. It may take a few years.
I wouldn't lose any sleep if the CIA / NSA decided to monitor everything he does.
I’m sure this is hella 4D chess this genius is playing

We already know they do. If it was up to me billionaires would virtually not exist. But if we allow people to accumulate more wealth than some nation states, then they have a unique ability to compromise national security, particularly if they're military contractor-adjacent like Musk is.And everything you do.

Medvedev was reversing what was said about Russia splitting and who will run the parts. That the prediction sound as ridiculous as this.
Old twitter: We will take millions from the government to pay our employees who will censor jokes and satire in the name of saving you from misinformation. We will decide what truth is. We will ban people according to a highly subjective interpretation of our own vague rules, and then force them to say we were right to ban them before they are allowed back.* If we want to ban people who are not breaking the rules, we will make up a new rule so we can ban them. We will gaslight you as to what the definition of shadow banning is, so we can drastically reduce the voices of people we don't like, and claim that we're not doing so. We won't tell our CEO about any of this, or consult him much at all, because he actually believes we shouldn't be doing these things.
New twitter: We will introduce a new view count feature that is a little wonky and inaccurate. In fact, we'll do a lot of stupid things that we'll have to quickly undo, and that we shouldn't have done in the first place, but none of it will be of any lasting consequence.
Yeah, I'm going to have to go with the new one.
* Note that Musk under twitter still does this crap, and I'm still opposed to it.
And here's few words about the twitter files, where much of the above was confirmed after previously being speculation:
The entire thing is inherently biased, but its still noteworthy and worth reading. The only way it would be non-biased is if all Twitter files were released to multiple newspapers and non-opinion journalists. Instead we have a billionaire and owner of the site personally selecting what he wants to reveal and what he doesn't want to reveal, and it reflects his own self interests. He even required that it be released on Twitter, literally making it a publicity stunt to benefit his site. Its also entirely focused on exposing negative liberal elements, but doesn't reveal any of the Trump requests to Twitter while they were in the white house. It also doesn't reveal anything since Elon has been in charge. Is there a succinct, non-biased summary of the Twitter files anywhere? I can’t stand when people try to convey complex topics over tweets and haven’t seen any tea coverage online that’s not completely one sided on either end.

This isn't quite accurate, but I'm not going to get into the left / right aspects that would be needed to explain. That's why I quoted the tweets that I did. People wanting this to be a left / right thing are missing the bigger picture. I will say that some leftists who challenged power absolutely did get censored and had their accounts and tweets limited in terms of discoverability by twitter. Its also entirely focused on exposing negative liberal elements
The only way you'll get a full picture is to read through articles explaining what is noteworthy about it. Then read through the stuff criticizing it and pointing out all the huge issues with how its been curated and released and what elements they decided to focus on. Then think about it on your own and decide which parts you find convincing from the two viewpoints.
