Elon Musk has an Iron Man laboratory

Co-founded Paypal, sold his stake, and used the money to help found:

- SpaceX, a space transportation company (CEO)
- Tesla Motors, a manufacturer of electric cars and components (CEO)
- SolarCity, a solar power system installer and supplier (Chairman)

SpaceX is now transporting cargo to and from the ISS, at prices half those of its competition. They independently developed the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule, and have 23 purely commercial contracts lined up for the next 4 years.

The Tesla Model S is one of the best selling electric cars on the market, despite its $70k+ price tag. It has the longest range (208-265 mi) and highest performance (0-60: 5.9-4.2s) of any mass market EV, backed up by a growing network of fast chargers across the US and Europe. Tesla plans to produce 21,000+ cars this year at their factory in Fremont, California.

SolarCity is one of the largest suppliers of solar service in the US.
and I'm just sitting here masturbating

rocket boots kind of suck.

The Mark VII armour in The Avengers has the propulsion system on the back of the suit rather than relying on the hand and foot thrusters, so if some crazy asshole was to try and recreate the armour, they could just do that instead.

Makes me wonder why Tony's 4 dozen suits at the end of Iron Man 3 (and the Prodigal Son) all reverted back to hand/foot thrusters, but eh, I guess it's kinda iconic.

Just read this guy's wiki page and holy shit, how have I never heard of him before? He's my new idol.

How much did Elon actually have to do with it though? He made a shit ton of money off paypal then started some other companies...

People act like he is some sort of evil (good?) genius but his superpower seems to be mostly money and investing in cool technology.

/hater

Uhh no, he develops a lot of the technology involved with his businesses himself and is quite hands on. Watch Revenge of the Electric Car and tell me that he didn't grind himself down working on making Tesla a success.

Wouldn't that leave you spinning wildly? Propulsion needs to be averaged around center mass, otherwise you'll start spinning.

The trouble with putting it on the feet is the same: while it's centered on two axes, it's so far from center mass on the third axis that careless deviations could generate a lot of torque, sending you spinning. The hand thrusters seem pretty vital as stabilizers. Otherwise, it's a bit like balancing a ruler on your hand. (Which robots can actually do astoundingly well, so perhaps with automatic stabilization it wouldn't be so bad?)

He's supposed to be a smug asshole not a scumbag.

"supposed to be"?

He developed all the technology himself? I somehow doubt that.

I doubt he's developing ANY of tesla's technology himself, quite honestly. He's rich, he has a vision, he hires engineers to get there.
Well, simply put, it seems like you're wrong? He's head of design for Tesla and CTO for space-x. He does a lot of the design himself.

Musk 2016.

NO! We need Musk to focus on innovating and bringing out positive change in humanity. Putting him in politics is only going to stagnate everything.

Musk is one person I wish more people would support. He seems to be the only billionaire with any desire to change the world for the better.

All you have to do is watch one interview with him and you'll see that he has a very clear understanding of how his projects work and can explain very clearly how issues in development were overcome. He's not a mascot.

What?! There are plenty of billionaires who have made positive impacts on the world and continue to do so. Bill Gates is a great example.

Edit- sorry for double post. The struggle is real on my phone.

Sorry, but I'm not going to sit here and believe the guy is a master engineer with his degree in physics. Especially aerospace engineering. Next.

Didn't say he was a mascot. Its very clearly his imagination, his vision, his ideas. Again, though, if you think he's actually desgning and developing any of this stuff you are nuts.

Still bitter you were completely wrong about Tesla?

Musk is a self-taught rocket scientist. He's an engineer, through and through. I'm not saying he's the brains behind everything, but he has huge influence in what gets implemented in each company. He works ~80 hours a week, and I'm guessing that's not 80 hours of using his imagination.

Well I guess either we can believe you, or we can believe everyone else. What's 'Next' supposed to be, by the way? Are you looking for me to say something else?

Oh, and are you saying it's fundamentally impossible for someone to be a qualified [specialized position] without a PHD or whatever backing it up?

Eh? What's the bold about?

Wrong about Tesla? I don't care for Elon Musk, I don't care for the model S, I really don't care for the smug fans that think they are car experts all of a sudden, but I never predicted anything about it going to fail or anything like that. I think it will do ok in its niche (expensive EV) although Tesla needs to come up with a higher volume sales car or else the good times are going to be short-lived. The smugness really rubs me the wrong way, though. If you criticize Tesla, Musk, or the Model S the fans get downright nasty. Just like that Model S vs. M5 thread.

What goes around comes around. Now that EVs are selling you can't hog the smugness all to yourself. The Model S P85 has been consistently clocked at 3.9 seconds for 0-60, just FYI.

Aaaaand this is the very thing I was talking about.

Do I really need to link the past threads? There's plenty of smug on display, and it's mostly coming from one side. Hint: it's not mine.

At the bolded section - Uhm, and your point is? I already know that. In fact, I actually linked to the VERY TEST that delivered the 3.9 0-60 amongst other data in a previous thread. So I'm not sure what your point is here.

Just wanted to make sure you had all of your Model S facts straight, is all. And please do link to that dreaded EV smugness.
