Emails show how Republicans lobbied to limit voting hours in North Carolina

When Bill McAnulty, an elections board chairman in a mostly white North Carolina county, agreed in July to open a Sunday voting site where black church members could cast ballots after services, the reaction was swift: he was labeled a traitor by his fellow Republicans.

"I became a villain, quite frankly," recalled McAnulty at a state board of elections meeting in September that had been called to resolve disputes over early voting plans. "I got accused of being a traitor and everything else by the Republican Party," McAnulty said.

Following the blowback from Republicans, McAnulty later withdrew his support for the Sunday site.

Garry Terry, the chairman of the Republican Party for North Carolina’s First Congressional District, sent an email on Aug. 13 to elections board members in his region, reminding them to act "in the best interest of the Republican Party" by opposing Sunday voting and restricting early voting to one location.

Guilford's plan also included one restriction that particularly angered Democrats. In the first week of early voting in 2012, residents could vote at 16 sites. This year, that has been reduced to one.

Mary Cranford, 52, a registered Republican, was fourth in line on the first day of early voting in Guilford. She was able to vote but said she was upset that only one site was open for the first week. She said she voted for Clinton this year.

"I can't believe what's been done to keep some people from voting in this state," she said.

Just 7,916 people voted in the first week of early voting in Guilford this year, compared to 60,732 in 2012, according to state elections board records.

The general counsel for Clinton's campaign and other plaintiffs filed a court motion on Oct. 1 demanding Guilford and four other North Carolina counties expand their early voting opportunities. The court denied it, saying that changing the early voting plans “would create logistical difficulties.”

I can't understand how a democracy can allow a major party to lobby or even regulate to have FEWER people being able to vote.

That's the most anti democratic shit ever.

Get it together america.

A republican in Alabama just said that making voting harder to do is what MLK, Rosa Parks, and others would have wanted

Republicans, pretending to care about freedom since the 1980's, and then doing everything possible behind the scenes to fuck it up.

Hillary needs to run ads about this in black cities to get black people to come out and vote. I hear the turnout among African Americans has been low this year.

when people always vote against you. Why would you make it easier for people to vote against you?

edit:
“We currently have more early voting locations and hours open than ever were open under Democrat control,” said North Carolina Republican Party executive director Dallas Woodhouse, denying his party was trying to suppress the Democratic vote.
Also seems the debate on having voting open on sunday was because worker would miss church.
Woodhouse defended the actions of the Republican officials, telling Reuters that Republican opposition to Sunday voting was not discriminatory but was rather based on the belief that people should not be required to work on Sundays.

There aren't any federal laws that say "X many locations for X many people in an X size area"? Sounds like you sadly need some.

There's no defending Republicans anymore. If you vote Republican, I just assume you're a horrible person and likely a bigot. You get no benefit of the doubt.

I made a thread about how people can support the party of voter suppression, the excuses some people made

these efforts will probably pay off too, NC is trending red this year in defiance of all predictions

this is the lesson the GOP is learning from 2016 - suppress the vote as hard as you can and you will win

Yeah, I mean come on, the only purpose for blocking or limiting voting power is to try and skew an election in your favor

It should be impossible to ever lose a right to vote and easy as hell to do it with plenty of time

''it's a rigged system, folks!''

fuck Republican scumbags, seriously with their racist voter suppression

how about trying to be inclusive with minorities for a change?

NC will probably go Trump though. The state is gerrymandered to hell and usually goes republican apart from Obama in 08.

Romney/Obama was incredibly close in '12. And like the other guy said, gerrymandering doesn't matter for statewide elections.

NC is purple as hell.

I'm sure it isn't the same across the whole state but here in Wake Co. we have had early voting sites open every day since Oct. 20th, including Saturday and Sunday. All counties should have some form of early voting, I voted last weekend as during the week it is too much a hassle for me to do after/before work. In practice it is pretty accessible (my county anyway), though I'm sure there are plenty of politicians here that would love it otherwise.

Here is the best thing I could find showing the locations and schedules: http://vt.ncsbe.gov/ossite/GetStatewideList

Agreed. Republicans on here keep wondering why their party keeps getting shit on from a high height, yet threads like these and many other negative, disgusting republican threads keep throwing fuel on the fire of why people really really hate the Repubs.

So in closing, the Republican Party was a mistake. It's nothing but trash. Burn it down, burn it all down.

Yeah and water's wet. Not surprised because the less people that vote means Republicans have a better chance of winning.

If only someone had called Bernie a doofus this would get attention.

Or that rumors are stirring about Hillary hiring people to get high democratic turnout, then the usual suspects would come sprinting out of their hiding spaces to spew their usual shit, like clockwork.

They really shouldn't be able to get away with this. I wish they could figure out to do it all online, but then fear of hacking halts that.

This is why the Voting Right's Act was such an important measure and why weakening it in the way the Supreme Court did was a mistake. I'm glad our Voter ID law was repealed (cited for being laser targeted to depress the minority vote http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...urt-strikes-down-north-carolinas-voter-id-law) but believe it was a mistake for the Appeals court to leave it to the state's discretion to pick and choose how many early voting sites they'd leave open for each county. This just compounds the importance of ensuring Hillary Clinton gets into office, we can't have a Supreme Court that's ideologically shifted in a direction that allows these sorts of decisions to stand.

Republicans in this state overreach to a ridiculous degree and I sincerely hope that they keep getting burned and ridiculed for it as they have (HB2, Voter ID, State Referendum bundling a banning of Gay Marriage and Civil Unions into the State Constitution).

Make mail-in and early voting available in every state. Extend all deadlines to between 10pm-Midnight (some states close at 7, how fucking ridiculous is that).

It's insane that in this age we STILL have problems with making voting accessible to everyone.

Yeah its crazy everyone should be able to vote when they want to not just in a small window this is exactly why turnout isnt always higher.
