Are they the new Activision?
Activision Blizzard was one of the bigger independent publishers along with EA. Now that AB is under Microsoft, is Embracer going to take that spot?

I mean, how could you possibly be sure of something like that? We have absolutely no idea the urgency square enix had to sell off those divisions much less wait another fiscal year to do it, thats a long time and a lot of money for a company that size
Well a quick google of Squra Enix's earning will show there aren't in a financial bind. But, that wasn't really my point. I believe this deal was ran by Microsoft and they passed on it based on Crystal Dynamics/Edios financials.

This was a way better get than that Bungie studio, Bungie has really only made 1 game, and they slightly evolved the formula and called it Destiny, I don't see much potential there.

Crystal Dynamics and Edios have made incredible games over the years.

Lets hope there are more good Tomb Raiders and some freshness added to the Hitman formula.

Now MS just needs to buy Embracer Group.

I don’t get this

100million for MS to have tomb raider exclusive for 1 year
300 million to acquire all the studio and the IP.

Who the fuck was running at MS for this shit ass deal ? That’s a ripoff!

Also what the fuck Sony was doing not to acquire the IP tomb raider ? If there is an IP that they should have got it’s that IP. The studio is also very talented so what the fuck . Sony is dumb as a motherfucker sometimes man ...

Not like MS any better. Jesus

Hitman isn't part of this sale

SE is keeping Life is Strange, Outriders and Just Cause.

You think those games will now sell more copies lol

Tomb Raider became an Uncharted clone. Sony has enough of those already - apart from owning the real thing.

Wow. 300 million seems like a quaint number for these sorts of deals nowadays.

What’s the scuttlebutt with being embraced? This isn’t a death sentence like being purchased by EA right?

I dont know if i'm losing my mind here but i thought a rmake/remaster was already being made?. I'm sure i read about it as they were talking about readding known content that was cut. Unless i'm mixing it up with some unofficial remake by a modder etc. I dont think i am though.

Nope, no annoucement was made, all I can find on Google was speculation/rumors.

You have a point and i do agree, certain IP's have a long history with lots of ups and downs overusing an IP can damage their image forever, so putting things aside for a moment sometimes is the best thing to do, but investing in a new IP also comes with risks as pretty much everything in the gaming industry it is about high risks, take a look at Santa Monica for example there were people claiming that the God of War IP should have been killed after GOW Ascension, a change was needed. so they gave the proper time and bet high with their new idea, the result ? the game was a hit and it sold nearly 20 million copies, nostalgia is not going to sell games that's for sure but there is no denying that is way easier to sell a product if people heard or used before.
God of War 2018 outsold pretty much all of the God of War games combined.

Right place, right time, right execution

Rebooting Tomb Raider, which has had multiple reboots and multiple more entries than God of War ever did... harder sell

I'm glad Deus Ex can finally spread its wings. Here's hoping Mankind Divided can finally get the true sequel it deserves.

Square Enix is an embarrassingly irrelevant company now. They've lost Eidos, their latest games are mediocre if not outright terrible, and they do poor remastering work trying to preserve the times when they were actually good. Best they have left is mainline Final Fantasy games and Dragon Quest (which they are taking in a risky new direction with XII).

If anything thats more of an indictment to how incompetent those 3 big studios are.

Just bungie alone with one IP generates 10x’s more revenue (annually) than all of them combined, even with famous IP

Trying to figure out what was the last worthwhile game from any of these devs and I can't think of anything, hopefully they are dissolved. Nothing of value will be lost. "pie_tears_joy:

Wat, FFXIV is one of the biggest MMO's on the market and has only been growing with the two recent expansions that have been received incredibly well and so have the FF remakes.
They should just focus on Japanese games imo, their Western studios were tired as fuck and just either put out trash and/ or the most generic AAA titles imaginable.

Square Enix is also a huge company that does a lot of other stuff than just video games, they publish a lot of non-video game content.

They're buying Embracer a bit after this deal closes.

lol I was just going to say this.

A parent company buying such IPs doesn't mean that company itself can't be bought.

A company bought Bioware and Pandemic, that company was then bought by EA. If anything I'd argue such a deal might make it easier for Sony or MS to buy em in the future or something.

So like everyone else, I do wonder why so many passed up on them. Maybe the cost of operating all those teams or not many relevant IP or something. I personally love many of the IP we are talking about folks, but many of them are dead as fuck at this point, as in....what the fuck has been even put out lately to believe this would be in the billions or something? Tomb Raider and maybe Deus Ex are the biggest IP here and I think worth the 300 million, the rest is icing on top

Its called business and the main focus of it is income. Your company value is based on revenue and profit, not number of games.

Bungie probably made more money from Destiny and its Micro-Transactions than all of the games made by Eidos and Crystal dynamics combined maybe 4 or 5x more, hence the purchase price difference.

This.

I don't know why people put so much fucking personal emotional shit into this.

This is about business, its about a solid return and what makes sense based purely on math. Those games didn't bring in some massive amount over the last years to believe they would be in the billions. The fact that the last Tomb Raider and last Deus Ex sold lessor then other entries doesn't help this entire thing, it shows even within their own series they are selling less.

WTF is going on.

300m for 50 franchises amongst which highest-tier ones?

Is there an incoming video bubble and those corporations know it? This is the only explanation...or maybe S-E is going bankrupt for some reason.

Just the Tomb Raider franchise is worth more than 300m, they basically gave Eidos out for free, wtf is going on at S-E?

Maybe, maybe not.

The last Tomb Raider also sold like 4 million or something.

It does seem quite strange

Tomb Raider can still be a massive franchise with the right reboot again

Maybe Square are in financial trouble?, maybe they just wanted rid of their western business?.
Its funny because i was watching a streamer earlier who was streaming one of the Thief games, and chat was talking about the Thief reboot from a few years ago that had little advertizing and promotional support from Square. Anyway someone in chat said how he had read an article (i know, i know) talking about how badly Square treat and supported their western studios. When you look at what happened with Deus Ex Manking Divided, it makes you wonder if there is truth in that and Square just doesnt want their Western studios anymore or somthing.

So many people already trying to make peace with Square Enix possibly being bought by Sony is fun to watch. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

At least let it happen first before you decide you hate final fantasy and always have since 9

What everyone is leaving out is that Embracer just embraced all their debt as well

Actually Shadow sold 8.9 Million copies.

Finally on September 12th, 2018 Shadow of the Tomb Raider was put on sale for PS4, PC and Xbox One competing in the launch that same month with Spider-man (September, 2018) obtaining a total of 8.9 million units sold to date and reaching diverse scores by professionals and players ranging between 76, 77 and 83 (for PS4, PC and Xbox One respectively) in Metacritic which led to it being nominated for best action game in the awards of reference of the sector, The Game Awards although it was finally won by God of War (2018).

Embracer is gonna launch a sub service or something. They have to be angling for something. Over 100 dev teams? For what? Really strange company.
