Evwrytime I see someone downplaying such shit with " are you surprised when...", I imagine a hand materializing in front of their screen, slapping them real fucking hard.

Sounds like you've got issues. Have you been listening to violent music lately?

Those lyrics weren't particularly interesting but they're probably delivered well. I don't think it's cool to rap about raping someone for the sake of relevancy but I'm also not going to jump on this bandwagon of suddenly shocked people. This has been his shtick for years and you either like him or you don't at this point.

I am getting pretty sick of the internet calling for blood over everything though.

That's cool, I'm tired of people using "It's X, why are you surprised?" as an argument to defend shit like this.

How is it a defense? I said it's not surprising, doesn't mean he isn't a cunt, but he has been for a long time, and is obviously going to continue to be.

you are underestimating culture

If you care about culture then ignore the fuck out of people like Eminem or Iggy Azalea.

I guess there's some value in calling out old rich white dudes on their bullshit but at some point you're just playing into their 'shock' tactics to raise controversy.

No one is defending it, it's just ridiculous to get so overreacted from something so minimal considering he is used to say things MUCH worse.

This IS Eminem, like it or not, he will not change because you, the general public or the media don't like what he says.

the problem is that other people do not ignore Eminem but are affected by his lyrics and the culture he "advertises", this affects people who do not care about Eminem or Iggy when they are treated badly because of their gender. Misogyny in music should not be ignored or accepted just because it is part of a specific culture or music genre.

The fact that people are getting all up in arms over what Eminem has been doing since his start is really funny to me. It's like people are making this out to be a new thing for him - plus people taking offense to rap lyrics is just adding to hilarity.

Oh and by the way, you are playing right into what Eminem wants - which is even funnier because like I said before he has been doing this since his start.

I still like Eminem. #rapgod

So what's the point of such a comment that is basically a more articulate version of "why u mad tho"? People are upset and speaking up about it. Whether Eminem changes or not is besides the point.

And you're just giving him more attention by getting offended. It will also bring up more anti-reactions. Then you're back at square one and Eminem laughs all the way to the bank.

See?

//: ^ Eminem's career in a nutshell. Let's party like it's 1999.

It's pretty sad the gimmicks second rate rappers have to go through- name dropping nobodies in their lyrics to stir the pot.

You never see Biggie, Tupac, Pusha T or Jay Z do this to sell records..

Biggie did make rape jokes. Thats probably where Em got his inspiration from.

Hail Mary, fuck her, I never knew her
I'd probably screw her and dump her body in the sewer

Its a horrible thing to say, but sort of ingenious in its shock value.

What's the point in posting that you're upset either? You're just voicing your opinion, the opinion itself has no greater worth.

It's not 'why u mad' because that implies it's intended to nullify the concerns of others, rather than display surprise at the surprise.

Sucking a dick while the recipient takes a shit? Those seem like awful fellatio circumstances, I find it bizarre that anyone would admire someone who wants to do something that unrelentingly unhygienic.

One would think a rapper would grow out of his angsty salad days by the time they were 42.

Yup, he's outgrown his Slim Shady persona. You could understand back in the early 2000s when he was taking media shots from every angle, his personal life was a mess....the man had to go through real adversity back then and Slim Shady was a good way to fire back at everyone that judged him or tried to take him down a peg.
Now, it's different. The media's done a total 180 on his content, he's universally revered as a rap icon/legend and he's off drugs. So why continue being a dick? Nobody is disrespecting him anymore. Nobody who matters anyway.

Eh not really surprising. Still probably the best rapper out there. I agree though that he pretty much has nothing left to say though and I wouldn't necessarily say he should be taken seriously. I can pretty much already tell that the song is playful, but he probably should know better not to say these things.

now its not art and everyone has objective moral standards...wow lol weak hearted crying, so all it takes is someone hitting the right nerve.

Isn't Iggy a rapper? basically she should fire back. He talks about demoralizing everyone men and women , his own Mother, his baby momma, male rappers (Benzino, Ja Rule, etc etc), R&B singers (Mariah, Winehouse, etc etc), the recently dead (Carradine).of course he is going to do this, nothing new here. Why would he give a shit now when he never cared who he offended.

His older material (SSLP and MMLP) was good social satire. His music use to be witty (with an actual message) like an episode of South Park. He would try to tackle different topics. He would mock parents for being hypocritical with how they raise their kids. He would talk about things like the Columbine school shootings or racism. He tackled serious social and political topics with dark humor in his lyrics.

His new material lacks that intelligent social satire. Now he's just trying to shock for the sake of shock.

Definitely agree.

This just really comes back down to that whole thing about him not having anything unique or interesting to say anymore. That in itself is a bit of a tired schtick but it's probably true, and results in lyrics like this feeling out of context and lacking in any sort of wit, power or relevance to anything.

I do quite like the fact he's still kicking around though. It's coming up to Christmas time and Grand Theft Auto's violence and Eminem's lyrics are in the news. It's taking me back years!

If he didn't get so much attention from lyrics like this, he'd probably stop and switch it up. He's like lyrical Super Jail, just nonsensical violence mostly and it moves units.

Big freaking deal. I don't like Eminem. I don't like Iggy Azelea or whatever. I hate rap music. This is a guy who often raps about killing people and yet rape is what you guys have issue with. Perhaps some of you may need to reevaluate the situation. As long as he hasn't raped, attempted to rape, or is planning to rape her it doesn't matter. And yes, this is why he mentioned Azelea and del Rey in the other song. And why he rapped about brittney spears, aguilera, nsync, etc in the past.

Why does she even respond to everything someone says about her?

Gets more press. Think she has an album or something out soon.

"A lot of people ask me.. stupid fucking questions
A lot of people think that.. what I say on records or what I talk about on a record, that I actually do in real life. Or that I believe in it. Or if I say that, I wanna kill somebody, that..
I'm actually gonna do it or that I believe in it.
Well, shit.. if you believe that then I'll kill you. You know why?
Cause I'm a criminal"

I mean Em touched on this point over a decade ago so I can't exactly get upset about it. Dude talks shit just to talk shit and get a rise out of people. I'm shocked it still works lol. And if I held hip-hop to modern "standards" I'd have nothing but Will Smiths old albums and Macklemore to listen to...

Great post.

I was expecting something actually shocking and twistedly creative. Those lines are just stupid.

Come on Em, you're better than this

I'm not sure why people give him a pass because he's Eminem? Those 'jokes' were socially acceptable 'perhaps' in the late '90, but the world has changed. Joking about this, and making money off this is lame as hell, and it's even more awkward because Eminem is 42 years old. Joking about r*pe and trivializing it is disgusting.

This is the same guy who argued that he was not homophobic because 'he played the role of the character Slim Shady' and 'when he grew up, words like f*ggot and qu**r were used all the time'

Enough is enough. Eminem needs to see that the world changed, and that he, and his archaic ideas are a thing of the past. He should apologize.

Socially shun people who buy his record.

I don't have to stay relevant

Eminem - 42

I get his steez, as I suppose most do, but that doesn't mean people aren't going to discuss his inciteful lyrics. Perhaps he is putting on a persona and this plays into it. It doesn't make his comments/rhymes any less offensive to some.

I want a window into his creative process. Does he get all the members of Eminem Inc. together in a whiteboard room and brainstorm?

"What about another song about rape?"
"Genius, Johnson! But who should I sing about raping?"
*goes through his daughter's iPhone*

Because literally everyone knows that he is joking, and a ton of people still joke about about rape. Yes rape is disgusting however anyone that jokes about it is not advocating it, the same way people joke about the Catholic Church and Padeophiles are not condoning it.

What year is this? 2000? 2001?

First, lol at the asterisks. Second, you realize that will never happen.

Yes, at his age, its awkward and somewhat bad taste to him to attempt to go back to his angrier and darker style, but at the same time, that's what he does. He loves starting shit and stirring up controversies.

I think these lyrics are just stupid and far below what he is capable of. He is, or perhaps was, far more creative than this. It's not even shocking. He has said much worse and much more disturbing stuff. This is tame in comparison and just pretty lazy to be honest

Why is this news? He has lyrics about wanting to rape his mom.

Shut up slut, you're causing too much chaos
Just bend over and take it like a slut, okay Ma?
"Oh, now he's raping his own mother, abusing a whore
Snorting coke, and we gave him the Rolling Stone cover?"
You're goddamn right bitch, and now it's too late
I'm triple platinum and tragedies happened in two states

By this logic he never has to apologize what if the world changes yet again and people take it as a joke again? The justification for this being wrong is , well people currently dont think thats ok! Thats basically an argument planted firmly on thin air. Who's to say our current times is the correct way to do things or even interpret his song / words since those who shun him are "current" and he is "archaic". Can't be wrong based on sentiment and passage of time that means nothing.

Em needed to stop rapping a long time ago, unlike say Kanye, he's irreverent and his rapping hasn't evolved much for the past decade or so. His shock-value tactics are proof of that.
