End of an Era: Current WRX is not getting an STi version

It was widely assumed the STI would be unveiled soon, but Subaru has decided to cancel an ICE version in favor of a electric variant and some undetermined point in the future.

Personally I was excited for the sti when the concept was unveiled a few years ago, but the current wrx is so fucking ugly that I was already dead set against buying an STI variant. Now I guess it’s moot

There’s a decent chance the upcoming gr Corolla may be the last new awd manual sports car

Shit was dead ever since they killed the hatchback and it was buried when they started looking like OLD Kias.

But yes, truly and end of an era. I've been elbow deep in more WRX/STIs than I have women, so this is coming from experience.

Always wanted one ever since they were released in the USA, well before then even, but by the time I was in a position to get one it just wasn't compelling anymore. Did an M2 instead.

Ooh, how do you like the M2? I was in a similar boat- I remember heading down to the dealership to check out the STi when it first came to the states all those years ago. Like you, by the time I could afford it I went with something less long in the tooth- type r

Dream car. 6MT.
Didn't do Euro delivery because it was rolling off the line in November and didn't want to deal with getting a set of snow tires or wrecking the paint since it wouldn't have PPF from the factory.

Compared to a similar vintage Evo or STI there's no comparison.

Not surprised they want their most recognizeable performance line be an EV. As much as some of you want to stick with ICE. EV is future and Subaru does not want to be left behind. When I bought my Tesla, the Sti was first choice before I had the test drives. I've been a Subaru buyer since 2000 with Impreza 2.5RS was my first ever new car I loved it.

The STI concept at TAS 22 made it look OK. So we just have to wait for the Subaru STI E-RA concept to evolve with new Yamaha electric motors?

Long live the 2004 era Scooby.

Fuck, I miss my old girl. Had I got the driveway space for a 5th car I would have one back in a heartbeat.

Hate this.

Cool, fun cars are disappearing. Kids today have no real desire to drive for fun.

Lame.

STi wasn’t my thing, I drift so I tend to love my 90s RWD JDM stuff exclusively, but it still hits and hurts.

Ugh.

The beginning of the end. Pretty sure an electric car would do better with a different model instead of the STi. Most people who buy STis like the manual transmission and the ability to modify the car. What the hell can you do with an electric motor? I am guessing the cost will also be much higher than the previous STi. Essentially this version will not appeal to most STI enthusiasts and I doubt they will pull in others. I guess we will see what will happen. I was impressed with the 2022 WRX, so to see this happen to the STi is sad to see. I have a 2012 WRX and looking back I should have picked up the STi, with the better brakes and transmission.

Glad I sold my 2014 hatchback STI for a Tesla model 3 last November. Way more fun to drive. Even handles in the snow better than my sti ever did

Whachu drive nowadays

Heh, I'm running a few v8's,

Post in thread 'What have you just bought?'
https://www.neogaf.com/threads/what-have-you-just-bought.1604807/post-265271320

current garage consists of;

2015 Ferrari 458 italia
2013 BMW E92 M3
2016 Audi RS7
2001 Honda Civic Type-R
2018 Range Rover SVR (just sold to make room on the driveway for my wife's van)

yes I know I'm a jackass. Petrol runs through my veins bruh. I've been toying with the idea of replacing the type R or the E92 with a convertible M4 competition so I can enjoy it with my kids in the summer but I don't know how I will ever part with any of the current ones I own to make room :( each of them has a ton of great memories inside, many miles of smiles.

I bet the next STI will be an electric performance SUV...
Let's be honest, as much as us petrol heads revolt and despair the industry is moving on.

Petrol and diesel engines are quickly becoming a thing of the past whether we like it or not. It is for the better of course, pollution and what not has to be tackled. I suspect the true classics of the ICE age will become expensive paperweights over time as the government makes it harder and harder to keep them on the road via regulations, costs and taxes.

I'm enjoying my gas guzzlers while I can.
