"Escape from Tarkov has caused irreparable damage to the games industry" says Dave Oshry

I have about 2000+ hours in Tarkov and I have to say, it's one of the best games, if not the best game, I've ever played. It's incredibly intense, and the adrenaline and dopamine response it evokes is unlike anything I've experienced in other media.

That being said, none of the other extraction shooters I've tried since have come even close to that experience, not even close at all. Perhaps Tarkov is the "WoW" of the extraction shooter genre, to approach it shallow.

Bottomline, it's Tarkov's depth in gameplay mechanics, map design, the challenging pursuit of rare items and loot, and its overall atmospheric immersion that make the game really one of a kind imo.

He is complaining about "trend chasing". Rightfully. But how is that the fault of the game which is being chased? Thats completely retarded thinking. 🤷‍♂️

New Blood is selling retro shooters like hot cakes. What the fuck is he on about? Stay on your fucking lane, it's working!

Channelling your inner box_man there I see.

Nah I actually put a decent amount of time in to Tarkov a couple of years ago, it's just not anywhere near accessible enough for it to go mainstream in the same way that Fortnite and COD have.

Personally I don't have a problem with it, the game is great for what it is, but I can see why the bean counters at these publishers would.

I watched a minute or two of the podcast in question. He doesn't strike me as a John Carmack or Tim Sweeney type. He's much more rage baiter / Cliff Blazinski type. Emotionally driven - at least how he presents.

Same, its a great game. And that's why you see the likes of Activison and Bungie having a crack at making a more accessible version. Somebody gets it right and it does have the potential to be absolutely huge.

Not saying that game is Marathon btw.

Check his credits on Moby Games.
Yeah, as "special thanks" which basically means absolutely nothing. Only direct participation i've seen was voicing some mob in System Shock.

I don't know why you'd even choose those games when he has a company that did release their own successful titles, like DUSK or AMID EVIL.

Tarkov hasn't even hit it that big.

I'd argue it's a sub-genre that's yet to have its "Fortnite" moment.
PUBG was BR's Fortnite moment, lol.

But "extraction" has been around for like 8 years at this point. At what point does this jjust become a genre of gaming with a low level of interest?

Unfortunately, based on what we've seen so far it's highly unlikely that it will be.
It might be big but it'll be nothing like Tarkov.

I quite like the look of it to be fair, but it was not what I was expecting, at all.

"Irreparable damage" Get a grip, no one is forcing you to make these zoomer-centric games let alone forcing anyone to play them.

The game is not at fault here, it's the suits thinking they know best than being actually creative and copying everything they see.

Tarkov is a genre defining niche game that become super successful by mixing popular ideas from previous games. That doesn't hurt/damage anybody.

Sure, as happened with a gazillion other similar genre defining games in the 50 years of gaming history several companies try to copy it doing their own take in that new genre/subgenre trying, to also be pretty successful, and most of them fail but some not and a few will also become a hit too.

And over time, the popularity of each genre/subgenre changes. Some are just fads, others continue being popular, some get outdated and other ones become more popular.

Nothing new, it's how things always worked in the industry.

Extraction shooter, always felt to me like a forced genre though, pretty much everyone i know irl has 0 interest in the genre. Who exactly are they making these games for? Just other people in the industry? Why is it the 'next big thing' when no one i know wants to play it?

Like I have no doubt it's got it's fans, but I don't think it is the next big thing, and I think at some level, devs are starting to see that now too. I'd say irreparable is a huge overstatement, but it's definitely caused some damage to some of these trends chasing devs who undoubtedly wasted dev time on prototyping it before realizing it wasn't going to work for them.

Extraction shooter isn't that new or popular a genre. Companies are tricked into thinking it is blue ocean when it is actually a stagnant pond. Just because it seems to be the next battle royale mode. But you can only say something like that in hindsight. But so called "bomber shooter" developers are not really so different when they ape contemporary mechanics like doom eternal mechanics or parry systems when there is no real evidence that they are that popular with all audiences.

Pretty bad take considering there aren't really that many extraction shooters and only one of them has achieved arguably significant success. In some cases it's only a mode in a larger game. Was this guy asleep during the MMORPG boom? That was a whole other beast compared to what extraction shooters are experiencing.

Complaining about a still relatively niche sub-genre that is getting more attention lately and might take off is wild when you consider the state of the larger shooter genre. Where many of the sub-genres have established franchises that dominate the scene and seem to squeeze out potential competitors. It's not impossible, but the odds do feel almost impossibly stacked against anyone trying to create a battle royale or tactical shooter or what have you. And the results reflect that.

An opportunity for new franchises to take the stage thanks to targeting a somewhat untapped sub-genre should be, I would think, cause for celebration. Instead of having just 10 games dominating the genre, you might end up with 12 or so. All of them with healthy communities. And then another relatively untapped, or even brand new, genre comes along and adds to it. All the while hoping that someone else comes along and cracks into the "saturated" sub-genres.

This guy really comes across as a bitter old man screaming "get off my lawn" at a public park.

Devs are always looking for the next big thing and copying has always been a thing. I don't need to tell you how many rad animals with an attitude platformers came out on Genesis after Sonic.

The question is, though, is this actually a big new thing, and is there actually an audience for a new one of this thing. Even genres that legitimately became enormous like BR and MOBA really only had space for 2-3 titles at most. And this makes total sense when it comes to multiplayer, people will play what other people play.

When it comes to extraction, I legitimately question whether or not this is a big new thing.

The only vector I can understand this take is that when something trends in the industry, the publishers and other people with funding want to make as many knock-offs of that thing, and the money for other games gets shafted.
