In my experience, clearly anecdotal, New Orleanians tend to vastly overestimate their progressiveness compared to other cities in the state. Especially Lafayette and, to a lesser extent, Baton Rouge.
I think everyone would prefer to live in New Orleans than somewhere like Natchitoches, Mamou, Morgan City, or something, but I've also encountered the worst overt racism I've ever seen in New Orleans and its suburbs.
In fact when controlling for trends of urbanization leading to increased progressiveness, I think New Orleans actually probably underpreforms on most issues.
