[Eurogamer] Yes, The Witcher 4's Ciri has been recast

"We believe she truly brought Ciri to life in a way that is both faithful to the character and exciting for fans."

Yes, the rumours are true - CD Projekt Red has indeed recast The Witcher 4's Ciri.

Whilst originally it only sounded as though the character's original actor, Jo Wyatt, had been replaced in Witcher 4's reveal trailer, the development studio has now confirmed it.

"Ciara Berkeley was cast as Ciri for The Witcher 4 cinematic reveal trailer," the studio said in a statement to TheGamer.

"Ciara is a talented actress who impressed us with her enthusiasm and vocal acting skills, and in this trailer we believe she truly brought Ciri to life in a way that is both faithful to the character and exciting for fans of the series."

The studio did not expand on why Berkeley had been brought in to replace Wyatt, but did confirm to press that Berkeley wasn't only brought in for the trailer, but will portray Ciri in the full game, too.

No, your ears were not deceiving you about Geralt, either. That was definitely Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle popping up at the end of the Witcher 4's reveal trailer, and yes, the white-haired monster hunter will absolutely feature in some way in the upcoming game.

While many had assumed as much - let's be honest, it is hard to miss the gravelling tones of Cockle's Geralt - developer CD Projekt has now officially confirmed what we all thought.

It's hilarious to see reddit gaslight themselves into liking this change.

"The old voice actress was bad anyways!!!"
"Ciri matured, so it's only natural they chose another actress!!" (not like the original actress didn't also age lmao)
"the old actress probably just doesn't have the time" (lul, omegalul even)

The Witcher trailer makes Jordan look downright feminine. Looks like a offensive lineman that's going through roid rage. Edema face, hypertension, puffy.

Get that girl some chapstick.

Tbh, old voice was really bad (well, at least compared to the rest of the cast in TW 3)

She was easily the weakest among them, to the point of being distracting sometimes. Didnt matter much 'cause Ciri isnt present for the most part.

So I'm glad with the change. Hopefuly the new one will be better.

I'm not keen on these changes at all. Having an iconic look is fantastic. Ciri looked great in 3 but this new model is frumpy. Not terrible by western standards these days of course, but disappointing to me at least. Plus all the lore stuff, Yen would've done God's knows what to Geralt if she knew Ciri was to undergo the Trial. Not to say the Witcher series was that great or original anyways. Elric of Melniboné deserves his due.

I knew this was going to be the setup even during the previews years back for 3 and in fact I had anticipated it as I prefer playing as female protags, but I just wish they kept the character model the same general shape. I think its crazy though that with all the fantastic modern graphics tools and power of modern machines and these companies keep on releasing uncanny CG trailers to try and wow audiences. I know its the CD Projekt way but still. This thing is probably so far away.

Geralt was such a good MC ... I really hate open world games.. but witcher 3 was awsome and most of it thanks to him and his interactions and storys... well its really a bummer the change to Ciri. Couldn't care less how she looks honestly and how this was the natural story to tell. Its a fcking fictional video game they can tell whaterver they want... and they will, since they are turning her into a witcher and breaking lore as far as I know.

Btw in the books she also becomes the MC ?

Jo Wyatt is 54 years old, and considering this is the start of a new trilogy that will likely involve a lot of mocap, recasting Ciri with a younger actress makes perfect sense.

I loved Jo Wyatt's voice too, but we must move on.

Also Ciara is cute af, I dunno what ya'll are talking about.

Seems like a downgrade imo. But it's not like its gonna make the game bad or anything, but just makes me wonder about the choice.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the argument from some people supporting the change was because Ciri is older now? Wouldn't make more sense to keep her if thats the case?

No because keeping a woman in her mid 50s to do a trilogy that will likely take 15+ years to see to completion, and having her doing mocap, is likely too much of an ask. Ciri is older in TW4, but not "old". She was 21 in TW3 and will probably be in her mid to late 20s in TW4. So casting a younger actress would still fit in that regard.

But its doesn't makes much sense to cast a younger actress just to make her model in game older.

I think she looks a bit older in TW4, but not a lot. At the absolute most she looks in her early 30s, but my guess is mid-late twenties.

Some folks like them old I guess?

Yeah, I think you solved it. I think they wanted an actress whose face shape more resembled the character so they could do better performance captured. Witcher 3 didn't have mo-capped facial performance like that so it wasn't really a factor that Jo Wyatt looks nothing like Ciri.

Well, she’s ugly now. Clearly intentional btw.
The Trial of Grasses is supposed to uglify you, this is a thing if you read the books.

What? I don’t remember reading that. There are some physical changes temporarily during the trial itself. The permanent changes are mostly around reflexes and eye shape and color.

A lot of people in the books comment on how Witchers are ugly, or react to them with horror based on their appearance in the books. They definitely downplayed this in the games, where they made Geralt much better looking than he is described in the books.
