I voted for Salvador in the Portuguese final. First time I voted since 2008. Amazing song. So proud of our choice. Go Portugal!

We are so sorry for the snooze fest, at least the guy it's a bit of a weirdo
Damn it Portugal, why do you hate to go to the finals so much? The performance is bad and overall the song is boring, really the only good thing about this song is that it's pretty. However, no one will know about that if they can't understand what he's singing, if you want to bet on lyrics you should have gone with an english song. Primavera had a better chance of going to the finals, heck even Nova Gloria could get there.

Whelp. At least least we'll be consistent. Yet again. Not surprised when all the songs were rather shit to begin with. Whish they'd invite one or two decent pop artists for once.

Edit:

When will RTP finally join the damn HD era on youtube? >.>

I have a friend who thinks that Italy is going to win the whole thing but I think he's out of his mind.

Belarus is my current favorite.

I wouldn't understimate Portugal. Will probably end up in the top 10, maybe even top 5.
With a sad song in portuguese? Not happening. I don't think that in the past 5 years any non-english song managed to get in top10 with a song like this. Last year nothing like it got there, actually only "Loin d'ici" sang in something other than english and it only got 13th place. Sure, in 2015 "Grande Amore" managed to get 2nd and in 2013 that greek song "Alcohol is free" was 6th, but none of the songs that got in top10 were sad songs.

Getting to the finals without singing in english is already hard enough, so you balance that with a livelier song and performance to have a chance. What portugal is doing here probably won't work, it's trying to get to the finals the hardest way possible, with a sad song in portuguese with a very boring performance.

It's tough to stand out in a year full of plodding ballads if you also have one, especially if it's not in English. Ignore the fact that the only non-English song to win since the last language rule change was a ballad, it was the year after Lordi and people were fine with something a bit different!

I have a friend who thinks that Italy is going to win the whole thing but I think he's out of his mind.

Italy has a good shot, actually, given the way things are shaking out. His song will seem like a breath of fresh air on finale night. Bookies are very high on him currently.

Let's put it this way, if the UK ends up being one of the more decent songs, you know it's a bad Eurovision year.

I love this song so much. Yeah, we won't win but it's a beautiful piece with some really good lyrics.

This festival in Portugal had some good entries music wise. They got some really good musicians to write them and it showed.

EDIT: Also, the version on the final was much better and the crowd was loving it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlqdpYDDGFA

EDIT2: I'm listening to this again. It has to be a first for a festival. Song is so good.

I'm holding oti personally responsible for Demy's shit song

I'm all for trashy dancepop jams but it doesn't really work imo

at least it has energy, I guess.

Also Lithuania is finally close to picking its song from the 49 in competition (yes really). Some fun ones are finalists so thankfully it should spice up that semi.

This was yesterday? Lol. Got my Switch yesterday and played Zelda all day.

Song is boring. But alright. Too bad, Demy can do so much more than this.

I think she sings this song a lot better than him. Maybe it's because she is more expressive or there may be another reason, I'm still not sure, but I like her more.

Also, let's agree it's creepy to sing this song with you sister.

Because she is the real musician with an actual career

idk what's wrong with Europe/Australia.

Even 1944 had a beat.

I guess it's up to Wiktoria to save Eurovision. Or Russia. Or Bulgaria, if it picks that wild pop star that everyone's been talking about.

I haven't hear most of the songs, I'm waiting for the real thing in May, but if that's Australia entry then Russia has it in the bag.

Hey Ireland, the minimum age is 16, not 12.

Wait hold on, a Macedonian entry that's actually good? O: Go Macedonia!!

Azerbaijan as dropping decent quality stuff, as they often do.

And finally, Montenegro again does not disappoint and brings us true Eurovision.

On a sidenote, semi 1 is going to be absolutely brutal. It's stacked with great songs (and Sweden and Iceland have their national finals tonight), while semi 2 seems to be mostly disappointing so far.
Speaking of national finals, does anyone know if the Icelandic finals are going to be streamed online? I wanna watch it. :)

Söngvakeppnin should be streamable live from RUV's site. Here's a link to the show page (the previous two heats are linked there as VOD), but if that doesn't have a direct link to the live stream then it will be on the main RUV page.

Still pulling for Svala but tbh I'd be fine with Daði winning, too, if it happens. I'm just worried he wouldn't make it out of the semi and I feel awful for a country as great as Iceland to have such terrible results at ESC recently :(

Hey Jean 7 hours ago
Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Belgium...This last songs saved this year❤✋

Preach

I don't care for the choir/background singers in Dihaj's song but whatever, the song is good and Azerbaijan will probably give her great staging so I don't really mind too much. Also the song was a collab between a Swede and... an Azerbaijani, for once

Svala wins in Iceland but Daði did well, I feel good for the dude

Norway is garbage again, NRK hates music, Europe, and the world, given how they've been the last several years

Robin should be fine for Sweden. I was surprised a bit at the int'l jury response to him but that staging really carries the performance. Nano sounded really weak but I'm not surprised he edged out Wiktoria in the public vote.

I feel like Iceland is not gonna pull through with yet another ballad (even tho it's a bit more upbeat, but still jeez).

Lithuania also had their national finals tonight, and apparently Fusedmarc won. Not surprising that the worst of the Baltic trio again sends utter shite. At least it'll be good Eurovision. :p

I dunno, I liked Icebreaker last year. But yeah, Norwegian entries otherwise have been quite disappointing since Rybak.

ICELAAAAAND WHYYYYYY

I don't know. Let's skip the show this year and try again in Italy next year.

Man, Greece is one of the better entries with a trash club song. What happened.

There's still 3 countries to release their songs and we have the full set: Russia, Bulgaria and San Marino. I have high hopes of these 3. Russia usually has quality stuff, while San Marino usually has Eurovision stuff, and Bulgaria normally falls either way. They will hopefully be released by March 13, which I believe is the deadline.

That said, Russia apparently is having potential issues and might have to drop out this year?
Edit: Read up on it, and apparently a spokesperson of the Ukranian delegation said that there have been no booking of the Russian delegation for the meeting of all of them or something like that. If they do not attend, Russia will be disqualified apparently.

Azerbaijan's participation in Eurovision has always been irritating because:

1). Azerbaijan have been busted for cheating in Eurovision by offering bribes. In fact Eurovision had to change their rules because of Azerbaijan's shady bribery tactics (and stop Azerbaijan from trying to cheat again).

Here's an undercover documentary from the BBC (from the UK) called "Eurovision's Dirty Secret Azerbaijan"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oea2XGsIbvI

2). If someone in Azerbaijan votes for Azerbaijan's neighbouring country Armenia, the police have tracked those people down, dragged them to a police station, and questioned those people for why they voted for the "enemy" (and have also tried to arrest them).

Azerbaijan television have also in the past blocked Armenia's entry in Eurovision airing on Azeri television (they literally block the video & sound when it's Armenia's turn to perform).

For the police to get involved and drag people to police stations for simply voting for a song, and for the television bosses to shut down the television signal when a country they don't like is performing....what the fuck is this country thinking, are they another Iran or Saudi Arabia?

3). Azerbaijan pays a shitload of money to have non-Azeri's from around the world - put together Azerbaijan's Eurovision entry. The song-writer, song producer, song composer, music video producer, dancers on stage, etc....are 99% of the time foreigners and not Azeri's - and I don't think that's what Eurovision is about.

Since Azerbaijan's entry in Eurovision, just 1 song was actually written and composed by an Azeri. Every other song, Azerbaijan have had to pay other people from other countries (mostly always Sweden) to write and compose Azerbaijan's Eurovision entry.

It's terrible because it makes Azerbaijan look like an uncreative joke (that they cannot write and compose their own songs)....and quite frankly a country habitually year after year after year having to rely on another country to basically create their entire Eurovision entry for them - is in my opinion not really in the spirit of what Eurovision is supposed to be about.

That's what most countries are doing though, and have been for decades. Saying that entries utilizing writers, producers, interprets, dancers, etc. from other nations is completely disingenuous. It's been part of the contest since very early (if not its inception, I'd have to look that up). Eurovision isn't about nationalism or representing/showcasing a nation's music industry, it's about music in general, it's about coming together peacefully and having a friendly competition.

Pushing that "spirit" of yours also would heavily prohibit smaller nations like, say, Malta, San Marino or Luxembourg, from taking part, it would fuck with countries that have the same music industry (e.g. Greece and Cyprus basically share the same music industry, the ex-Yugoslavian countries all have a very tight music scene, etc.).
It also would bring up the question: what about multinationals? Alexander Rybak was born in Belarus but represented Norway, being its citizen. What about not even that clearly cut cases like artists that were born in countries that no longer exist, or artists that have multiple citizenships, etc.? What about a Serbian musician that was born in the Serbian part of Bosnia-Herzegovina - would they be forced to represent Bosnia, or Serbia? What about artists that are immigrants, or the children of immigrants - are they forced to represent the country they originate from or that they live in?

And that's not even considering that the music industry in general is extremely international.

Edit: Also, just to clarify, I don't disagree with your other points, only your argument that contracting international artists not being what Eurovision is "supposed to be about". That doesn't change the fact that they ARE participating, and I think what Eurovision really is not supposed to be about is giving the artists performing for Azerbaijan shit because of the flag that appears next to their name and song title.

I also am pretty sure that just about everyone who frequents EurovisionGAF is aware of the shittiness that Azerbaijan is doing behind the scenes in regards to the contest.
