That made you feel like your watching car wreck waiting to happen? I just did.

About six months ago I quit the martial arts school I've been training at. I did it for my own reasons, but the place had merit. Since then I've bounced around. While I was there I made friends with a tough up and coming fighter. He showed promise, had good punching skills and hit very hard. I'd since lost touch with him, until about a week ago when he called me.

We caught up a bit, and after some more talking I just found out today he's got a fight lined up. A horribly brutal fight on paper. The rules as I understand them-

Biting to all areas (including face) is allowed
eye gouging is allowed
tap outs will NOT be respected (If you are caught, your joint breaks)
bare knuckle, anything goes
There is no ref
There is no judging system
Win until opponent is unable to continue, giving up doesn't count (second can save you by throwing in towel, but how much that will be respected is unsure)

The rules are still being worked out, but that's what they have now.

Worse, my former training partners opponent is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. My former training partner is a tough fighter, no doubt. But he has about a 3rd of the experience this fighter does. Experience wise it is clear to me he is far, far overmatched. This is not to say I doubt his fighting ability, I respect it. He just needs more time.

What concerns me is that this is not just a loss waiting to happen, but a potential maiming, crippling, blinding or worse. As I said before, my former training partner shows allot of promise, but this is a match that has the card heavily stacked against him. I tried to talk him out of it, but not well enough. I'm going to help him prepare, but honestly I can't do much. My grappling skill is nowhere near black belt level, and honestly you can't prepare yourself perfectly for that type of fight. I haven't spent much time around this man, but I don't want to see him get hurt. With this type of rule set, even if he wins he could still be badly injured.

Ah well, not really looking for advice or anything. Just needed to vent.

Where the fuck is a match with such rules allowed o_O ? This is not martial arts; this is Tekken Force!! Is your friend a black-belt too?

That sounds like everything goes, so tell him to slip a green mist capsule under his tonge and have him spray that shit into the other guy's face.

That's crazy. What on earth would motivate someone to want to fight an underground fight with rules like that?

Only a dumbfuck would take part in a fight like that. Even for several millions of $ I wouldnt do it.

BITING ALLOWED!?

Some dumbshits just have too much testerone, too few brain cells, and too poor an understanding of how respect works.

But hey: sometimes you hafta learn the hard way. Let him do it.

Insecurity.

I'm going to train with him next week and try and get some sense into his head. If I can't, I don't know. I'll help him as best as I can, but I'm genuninely concerned with rules like these.

Not in Jiu Jitsu, which is going to make a huge difference in a fight like this. If he can keep the fight standing or get up when he's taken down, he has a shot to win via KO. His hands are heavy, and he has skill. Honestly, he's coming to me for support so I feel fucked up sizing up his ability though, but I think the difference in level of experience between two fighters is very large, and they wouldn't be fighting eachother in a sanctioned event.

Yeah, seriously.

There's a pretty thick and bright line between Tough and Stupid and you know you've crossed it when you agree to a fight where you're not allowed to quit.

Really. Just go pick a fight in a bar with some Marines if you got somethin' to prove. Either way, you'll come out of it with a lesson learned.

Unless this is one of those "my style versus your style" fights that made martial arts ever so entertaining.

Being a submission fighter would be preferable. The only thing you should be scared of is when it goes to the ground - that's when the dirty shit is going to come into play. Getting knocked out with a strike can happen in any match. If you get caught in a submission hold without the abillity to tap out - that's when you're going to regret having been born.

If those are the rules, tell him that you want to show him a new submission the last training session before the fight and then break his arm.

Breaking his arm is too much \:
Try to make him understand what he's about to do. If he still doesn't understnad - drug him with enough sleeping pills he won't be awake that day. Even if he doesn't talk to you after that, it's worth it.

Hah, was that you who told that story years ago about getting into it while drunk with some Marine? :lol I vaguely remember it. At least the brain damage wasn't too severe... ;) :D

Yeah, anything like that. And if you have to break his arm, do it. The chances of serious injury in rules like that are huge! In fact, how the hell does he expect not to either blind his opponent or be blinded? Someone's gonna be blinded, that's for sure. Stop the fight, man. Its not worth it for either of them.

Going into a style-vs-style match with a BJJ blackbelt in which you're not allowed to tap out is quite possibly the stupidest thing anybody could do.

When we grappled in the past, I caught him numerous times. To be fair, punches were not being thrown and that's makes a huge difference. Since we trained, I heard he faired well in a MMA practice with an experienced grappler. That being said, a BJJ blackbelt can be anywhere from around 8-10 years of hard, serious practice. Some great guys can get it much earlier, but it still represents years of hard work.

I have to explain the graity of the situation to him. I agree with everyone sentiments here.

I don't even think that Bruce Lee would agree to a fight like that.

That is just a little bit overboard. I'd try to stop him any way possible.

If you can't convince him to not fight, and you really care about his wellfare, you might have to make a bitch move.
Find out when and where the fight is (I assume shit like this is illegal), and call the cops to let them know (if they get there b4 it starts, no trouble for anyone), or just say that illegal gambling/drug use is going to be happening at that location.

NLB2, I was being sarcastic. As a longtime practitioner of Isshin-ryu and Goju-ryu, I got rather tired of the more gung-ho idiots in my dojo getting all ballsy to fight folks from the local Taekwondo or Hapkido schools just to make some stupid point about style superiority.

Everyone knows Jeet Kun Do is the best fighting style.

Anyways, If I was me, I would definetly not show, or even think about this. But, I think the calling the cops idea works, or maybe you could beat him up before the match, poison him, or just make him unable to do more damage to himself.
