EverQuest Next Landmark News and Info Thread | Build in Queue

Game looks cool, but Im kinda afraid of all the attention towards the building stuff... I dont even know if I like that since I dont play Minecraft/Terraria. Hope they dont screw this up =/

This is basically "the building" part of EverQuest Next. The new game itself will be built in part from SOE and people submitting designs through EQNL. It's the first time an MMO will be built in joint.

I think the largest area on concern revolves around the real money market place. A game where you can supposedly sell anything. Mad dashes for the prime plots of land, resource prices shy rocketing for those that choose to purchase them People with sprawling manors purchased with real money next to mud huts for those that don't pay but choose to grind.

Not saying this is how it will be just an over arching concern any game should have. the fact that Diablo 3 gave up on it is very telling.

Yeah, got that email yesterday(?) and was so happy thinking it started already.

sooon

I expect to be disappointed though. =) lol

Curious as to how much will be live in the alpha. Will it just be pure construction and mining. Will there be enemies to fight as well or will that come much later in the alpha.

fyi, they updated that link to say that the demo will be on a local server, it won't be alpha and that alpha dates would be announced later.

So maybe not until next month for alpha.

We know for sure that there will not be any combat when we first get in, who have no idea when that will be introduced.

A new Developer Diary was posted today (very good video, grid mode, mirroring, build in the sky, etc.): Advanced Tools - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV1_uXe7ONM

So if you build something in Landmark, can another player come along and destroy it, take it over etc.?

I believe items on your plot of land will be safe unless you set it up otherwise. Anything off your plot will be destructible by anyone (I think that's right)

Your claim is yours alone, no one else can mess with it. However you can give permissions. If you give someone permission to build they also get the right to destroy.

(Semi cross-post from GI thread) Been watching the streams and I really like that a 'mainstream' game is implementing robust creation tools, but I can't help the nagging feeling that without basic logic/scripting mechanics available to players, the potential is wasted.

Lets say your guild wants to build a massive base, it can easily feel lifeless without being able to populate it with vendors and custom guard patrols. But even that isn't enough...

If everyone is building amazing bases, what encouragement is there to explore other people's creations? It would be great if devs could find ways to integrate player creations into every gameplay feature they implement, such as: are you a good raiding guild? Well you better spend gold on hiring guards or people can sneak in and steal loot. Top PvP guild? Better be prepared to defend your base at certain times, or another guild can try to storm it and take your trophy. Are you or your guild rich as fuck and want to make a name for yourself on the server? Capture a raid/world boss, adjust his scripting and put him in your base protecting a giant pot of gold - invite other guilds to try to take him down. There's so much potential to make creations and design meaningful.

But EQ Next is still a ways off, so maybe stuff like this is already on the roadmap, I just hope player creations aren't just seen as a partitioned, vanity feature.

It will be a fine balance between interactivity and abuse. One one hand they plan of giving landmark an incredible series of tool sets, on the other they don't want to allow anyone to be able to ruin another players experience unless they opt in for it. So maybe is the guild opts in for PvP style content. I do have to agree though i want more than vanity builds. I want to be able to build with a purpose and from what I'm gleaming from insight I think there will be a mechanic for it.

Did everyone see the new Subscription plans for SOE?

https://forums.station.sony.com/soe/index.php?threads/update-2014-membership-update-from-smed.11500062999/

Long story short, they are lowering All Access price to $14.99 and that is the base subscription going forward. Basically everyone is an All Access member if you subscribe now. Still get 500 SC coins, 10% off the marketplace, etc.

Wow. That's pretty crazy but considering how much money they likely are making off the item stores why not lower the price and allow you to play all of the games. While at the same time push you toward the items store.

For Alpha testers, Georgeson Tweets:

"Hey #EQN Trailblazers! Heads-up. 64-bit OS is highly suggested for Alpha. 64-bit lets us access all your memory. Alpha isn't optimized yet."

"We'll post min specs soon. Just giving heads-up so you can decide whether to upgrade if you're XP or Win 7 32-bit OS."

"And update those video card drivers! (hehe. Always the biggest source of bugs in every playtest ever. :)"

Seems like a fair heads up. Its 2014 time for 32-bit to die.

That's really cool. The only time I ever subscribed to that thing was when I got nostalgic and wanted to dick around in EverQuest, EverQuest 2 and Vanguard, though. Now that those games are all F2P, I can pretty much already do that without paying.

Aww yeah love my 64 bit Win 7.

They've got to announce a start date for the Alpha soon, right?

Should be soon. Based on Georgeson's tweet we'll probably get min specs soon, so maybe we'll also get an Alpha date at the same time.

Heads up ,64-bit is required for Alpha: "I misspoke yesterday. 64-bit OS is *required* for Alpha. Sorry, folks, but the 2GB RAM we can access via 32-bit OS isn't enough for Alpha."

Even better! Keep the riffraff out. JK. Sucks. More testers is a good thing. I guess they haven't optimized it much.

Honestly, I kind of wish they'd just ignore 32 bit and stick with 64 bit client only.

I may have to check the Steam stats, but are there really that many people running 32 bit operating systems that have the hardware specs required to play this game?

"Another good development bug pic. This happened when testing procedural generation of props for a continent. :)"

I cannot wait to experience some fun bugs... =p

Damn excited for this. Ive been mapping out and planning different creations for the last few month. Even went out and purchased the beta early access for a few friends for xmas who love minecraft.

I find the whole seperation of EQN and EQN Landmark really confusing and I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

Was the original plan to add a Minecraft element to EQN and then they decided to split the 2? I think it would have made a lot more sense to make 1 game out of it. That way people aren't split between the 2.

From how I understand the story, they were making a traditional linear quest-hub theme park WoW clone in the Forgelight engine for years before they decided to incorporate the Minecraft-like gameplay with whatever voxel technology they are now using. At that point, a decision was made to completely throw out the systems and gameplay of the old game and start over.

Unfortunately, that means there won't be anything for EQ Next for many years yet as they have to design the game anew from the ground up (although they surely have a ton of art assets they can reuse). I'm not even sure if they have a firm direction for what EQN is going to be yet.

Either way, they had some cool gameplay in with the Minecraft stuff and decided to spin it off into its own thing while they build EQN proper so they can get some money flowing in sooner than later.

That's my understanding of the situation, at least. I agree that it's a bit confusing.

The current EQN is actually the third time they've started over from scratch based on What Dave Georgeson said. Georgeson was not part of the first two attempts. According to Georgeson, Landmark came about because the devs were having so much fun building stuff and thought that players would also enjoy using these tools, so they made a split. A big reason for releasing Landmark (and also tying it in with EverQuest) is that SOE knew EQN was going to be a ways out yet, but they needed to get something released that can generate some revenue for them while they work on EQN.

Ugh. I want to play this but the whole pay to beta test a game thing hurts my soul...unless it's an indie game because they need the cash a lot more. I'm holding strong for now. Plus, WTF at those prices!!!

Ya it's pretty ridiculous. A F2P game.... but you pay to beta. Fucking backwards times we're in. I don't even know of any indie/kickstarter games that have done that.

Well, it's one way to make sure that only serious people sign up. They are also giving out some limited digital goods to people, so it's not entirely "pay to beta." Not saying those digital goods have any kind of intrinsic value, but f2p games make hundreds of millions every year on selling them through their in-game stores.

Keep forgetting it's FTP. If that's the case this doesn't bother me....(as much I suppose.. I don't know.. still conflicted)
