EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

ARMS, despite being unproven, I can kinda understand. It'd be nice to have something legitimately different in comparison to the more standard fighters there. Felt the same way about Smash before there became fucking two of them each year lol.

I think your post would better apply to Pokken tbh... paying to delay everyone else's games, lol.

Same, would like to see ARMS or Windjammers win to see something fresh.

Arms is a weird choice because it has no solid date at all and Nintendo might want it to fill gap in time for Switch. Could easily get delayed out of everything.

Yeah it basically appeals pretty much only to the Xbox only crowd and only a extremely small subgroup of that userbase. Turnout seems smaller and smaller each year too. MvC3 is a much better choice as it reaches across all userbases.

Those are some pretty massive alternative facts. KI has grown every year it's been at Evo.

KI turnout at last year's evo was actually one of the highest increases in returning games for that year. Tournaments are relatively healthy. Good money in online and offline. All honesty, KI doesn't really need EVO. It's not even a part of the KI Pro League.

Just went to look the numbers up. I stand corrected, I had thought the numbers had gone down.

However, it does seem like it comes pretty much dead last in registrations every year for the three years it's been in Evo. The point that MvC3 is more far-reaching stands.

Some people really don't like Smash.

Why tho? It's a fighting game with a large community. It would be bad business to leave it out.

Some people in the FGC don't feel it qualifies as a true fighting game. I agree with your point that from a business stand point it would be foolish to exclude it.

Hoping Marvel makes it, kind of a shame the community has to throw a bunch of money to make it happen but I guess it's for a good cause.

I'm surprised at how much money Pokken Tournament has made thus far.

Some people think that only things derivative of Street Fighter or Virtua Fighter are fighting games, and anything that tries to utilize a different formula isn't deserving as being recognized as a "real" fighting game.

It's a shitty attitude that far to many people have.

I would love to play ARMS at Evo, but is hard to make it promotion due to not having how to play the game in the time of the crowdfunding

Yeah I'm also kind of baffled as to why people are surprised at KI not making the initial cut. I mean yes technically it's attendance has gone up the last 3 years:

KI 2014: 338
KI 2015: 397
KI 2016: 540

Which is respectable for sure, but then you compare it to all of the other games and see in 2014 it was 5th place in entrants, and in 2015 and 2016 it was last place which includes getting beaten in 2015 by Persona Ultimax which was ran on a 6-month outdated version of the game that Japan wasn't playing on and getting beaten both years by Tekken 7 which still hasn't gotten a home release.

At a point you need to let a game/community that hasn't gotten in to Evo at all in. Also as already mentioned KI is easily the number one game on the Voting list that can handle not being at Evo with the KI World Cup.

Hmm that's unfortunate. It's not a traditional fighter, but it is a fighting game in the end. I should just be happy my games got in then.

That's true but the real issue is there is no crossover in the community. Chicken or the egg, not sure.

I understand why mahvel would win, but man it's just not fun to watch.

KI at least is still getting new content. Blows my mind they way it's been treated because the game is surprisingly great.

This isn't true either. Smash developed its own community because the FGC rejected it, but Pokken was played by a lot of people who play other Fighting games. And ARMS has had interest shown by a lot of people who play other Fighting games. There are definitely people in the community who embrace these new types of games in the genre.

I like Smash, but it's kind of its own thing. Smash being at EVO is like having an international exchange. But having two Smash titles in EVO at the expense of bread-and-butter fighting games is like letting Sweden have two hockey teams in the Olympics. Why Sweden got two teams, man?

This is a good analogy, actually.

I've come to really enjoy watching Smash tournament play in recent years, but when TWO Smash games come at the expense of other traditional fighting games at THE traditional fighting game tournament of the year it starts to grind my gears a bit.

Put Melee in the voting pool and put KI back in the main lineup where it FUCKING BELONGS GOD DAMNIT NOW I'M GETTING ANGRY AGAIN!!!111

I want Pokkén to win because how can you not like to see Pokémon kicking the snot out of each other?

However, ARMS would be pretty fun. The part I don't like about ARMS is that it's a brand new game and people haven't been playing and mastering it long enough to make it interesting to me.

I would donate for Killer Instinct if it was Killer Instinct Gold.

You misinterpreted what I wrote. We agree. I'm saying there's hardly any crossover between smash and other Evo game player bases. While there is a lot of crossover between the street fighter, Tekken, GG community.

I think EVO should institute a rule that if you find out someone plays Smash, you get to hit them from behind with a steel folding chair

Well if ARMs suddenly shoots up due to large donations from vaguely NOA sounding names like Till Brinen and Amy Regfil you'll know that Nintendo wants to give it that extra special marketing push.

A DQ probably wouldn't help their marketing... or maybe it would.

A long running thing each year at TYM is a portion of the MK community moving more and more towards wanting to leave EVO behind as their main event. Odd hours for tournies, hardware, bracket issues, venue changes early in the morning when scheduled near last the night before...just a lot of longstanding complaints from the NRS folks on how they get shuffled about.

In hindsight its no surprise they dont seem to give a shit for donating to this to push their title at a venue that yearly has threads to leave. I like having it there but I also just like the idea of more NRS period. I can see their points on many of the issues they've taken up each year over their treatment. This year they're not even on Sunday as a main event so the thread seems to have reappeared early.

That is a plus, you get a bigger audience in stead of the same pool of players.

lol don't

Smash earned their spot tbh
But I don't think they earned two spots, and I really think Skullgirls earned theirs too
I have no fucking clue why BlazBlue didn't have to fight for shit

As much as I love Melee, I do want it gone even if it makes no sense financially. It's just too big >_<

Yeah sure, but the original question is why traditional Evo players don't like Smash.

It's also a big benefit to the financial side of Evo that the two Smashes only have 20% crossover, and still get that many numbers.

Smash deserves the 2 spots, both games get the biggests attendants in the tournament,

Now, I think that is fair that only one game goes on sunday, like it or not, those games are a logistic nightmare, so is better to actually have the game that doesn't require a crt on sunday

Put Melee in the voting pool and put KI back in the main lineup

In which case Melee would just clean up in the voting and you'd end up with two Smash games regardless. So what you're basically saying is that KI should be in, and everything else in the pool should be axed, lol.

Honestly, I just think their should only be one Smash game in there. Let the community sort it out between them which it is, but axe one or the other.

when there's so little overlap in attendees for the two games, they aren't gonna axe either their second or third most popular event.
