I can't speak for America but the BB scene in Japan is HUGE! After living there for 5 years I can tell you it was by far the most popular game I saw in every arcade I went to. Most of them had more BB cabinets than other fighting game cabinets. They always had guys playing and waiting to play. Anecdotal evidence I know, but that was my experience.

BlazBlue was the only anime game at EVO 2014, though. I'm not sure if BB can co-exist with GG as well (the last time there were two anime games at EVO, 2015, P4AU got less than half of GG's entrants).
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax also got more entrants than Killer Instinct in the same year (2015).

Since when? The NRS competitive scene is kinda notorious for underachieving given the commercial success of the games.

EVO give far more exposure to Smash than any of those events. I think it's stupid for any fighting franchise to say they don't need EVO (Like Skullgirls members are doing).
But hey, If they don't need EVO they can leave and everybody happy.
I don't think EVO needs Smash that hard from a business point. I think it's reached a point where EVO can be wealthy no matter what. Still I get you wouldn't like to lose the piece of cake Smash is.
I love Smash, but as a party game to mess around with friends. As a competitive game I find it so boring to watch... Melee was never intended to be a competitive 1 on 1 fighting game, It was the community who forced it. Just like trying to make Mario Kart a competitive racing game by turning off objects. And that's why I believe Nintendo it's not able to replicate the formula of that game even if they wanted to (which they don't).
I'm okay with people enjoying it. I'm just sick of hearing them every single year rioting about not having what for most viewers it's the same experience twice on finals days. Then bashing the event that literally has put them where they're now and games that made possible the growth of the event before Smash was in it. Yeah, they earn their spot with this same method, but EVO gave them the chance to do it.
Without EVO Smash Melee would have still been irrelevant as it was in that time.
Without EVO Melee would have not have the exposure to attract some Smash fan into the competitive aspect of the game.
Without EVO there's no way in hell Nintendo would have put the competitive mode inside Smash 4.
Things could be very different right now for competitive Smash lovers without EVO. So they should respect it more.
To be fair Marvel fans also got plenty of flack for stealing all those credit cards.
It's been stuck at 1.3k for awhile now ;_;

Being made into the competitive marvel that it is by the community should be celebrated not reviled. It might be gamings most beautiful accident.
