EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

As someone who's actually played Arms I can't say I think it would be very fun to watch even as a meme/joke thing

Marvel is the obvious pick and probably what I want the most even though I'm kind of done with being a spectator for the game just because nothing else is better and it's still Marvel at the end of the day, Windjammers and Nidhogg would be neat/fun and great as "meme games," (though they won't win) and I'd be totally okay with Skullgirls, Super Turbo, or Pokken (and I think the first two would be hype for most people, a breath of fresh air, and a good way to spotlight a less active community; I also think all three totally have a shot at winning if a small one).

Yipes will be going to FGTV house this Friday for weekend long donation drive with lots of Marvel gods & heads showing up...can't wait.

Between that and Max, KI's got a pretty solid shot at taking this.

Honestly think Killer Instinct deserves it the most but I don't think it'll end up getting the support it needs. Big donations are good but it's still limited to $10 per person as far as "voting" is concerned.

everyone heres just posting "i dont like it" with no real reason behind it. A forum would be pointless if it was just people stating opinion without anything to add or think about.
Being made into the competitive marvel that it is by the community should be celebrated not reviled. It might be gamings most beautiful accident.

The post you quoted contained reasoning. You just took a single line out of it to snipe.

Oh, and Quake's bunnyhopping is gaming's most beautiful accident.

GB won't do anything for Windjammers, they never get involved with stuff like this. Well, their community might, but I don't see it.

show me the reasoning instead of accusing me. All that was said was "nintendo didnt want it to be competitive" which is 100% irrelevant to the fact.

vote Arms sheeple

I'd love to see it win but let's get real here for a sec. Why vote for Arms? As long as Nintendo doesn't push it by releasing some gameplay videos there's nothing to really do here other than piss off some KI and Marvel fans (which, hey, I'm a fan of this whole vote salt extravaganza, please vote for Arms).

show me the reasoning instead of accusing me. All that was said was "nintendo didnt want it to be competitive" which is 100% irrelevant to the fact.

I'm "accusing" you, because that's what you actually did. You took a post that stated a detailed opinion (that covered a topic far broader than "like" or "dislike" of the game) and pulled out a single line, because you apparently don't approve of anyone stating that they don't care for the games, even if this is a tiny comment surrounded by a wall of more prominent text.

Obviously nobody here is looking to write reviews on games in this topic, so you're not likely to see detailed breakdowns as to why someone doesn't enjoy seeing a specific game (especially as you'd likely dismiss this regardless as "nobody cares what individuals think" on a forum where individuals post their individual opinions). A game not being intended for competitive play, whilst not immediately dooming it as a spectacle is not at all irrelevant, as games designed for that purpose will often take how well the game works for being spectated as well as how well it works for being played. Gutting large aspects of the game that would otherwise be core to the experience because they are generally incompatible with competitive play can very often cause a game to be both less fun to play, or to watch (hence jokes such as "No Items, Fox Only, Final Destination"). This is of course still subjective, which is why it applies to the individual and not everyone... if you don't want to find yourself exposed to individual opinions, then you're in the wrong place.

The poster even noted that they don't dislike Smash itself, also noted how as a spectator the two Smash games offer most viewer a duplicate experience. Sure.. the post is overloaded with reasoning justifying the single line you decided to focus on... but that may be because that one line wasn't the focus of the post in the first place. Funnily enough, you have made multiple posts in this thread that are basically just "I don't like post" with little else to substantiate them.

Can't be surprised with Marvel leading the donations so far.

What I am surprised with is that Pokken hasn't fallen behind KI yet. Guess people really like Braixen huh.

Honestly think Killer Instinct deserves it the most but I don't think it'll end up getting the support it needs. Big donations are good but it's still limited to $10 per person as far as "voting" is concerned.
I don't understand this post. Isn't it just whichever game raises the most money wins the spot?

I don't understand this "it deserves/ doesn't deserve" to be there idea. I want KI to win but I'm not going to shit on the other games vying for the spot either. This is a chance for communities to put their money where their mouth is. Think a game deserves to be in, show support.

Debating which game deserves to be at EVO is silly. EVO is going to showcase the games that they want to showcase. The only thing that matters for the games that aren't in is how much cash you put up.

Honestly think Killer Instinct deserves it the most but I don't think it'll end up getting the support it needs. Big donations are good but it's still limited to $10 per person as far as "voting" is concerned.

The limit is $10000 per person, and no corporate sponsors.

People are going to shit on other games to help make the case for their game as being more deserving. EVO could easily look at the numbers if it was about the most deserving games instead of using their own reasons for choosing the games in the lineup and appearing on Sunday.

I'm all for charity but the more I stop and think about this competition the more I dislike it. Especially the inclusion of someone of the stuff here. For example Pokken had the 4th highest number of entrants last year behind SFV, Smash 4, Smash Melee and it's numbers were above 1000. Why does it have to fight for a spot like this?

Then there is the inclusion of something like ARMS. It's all well and fun but in the end we really don't know well that game will turn out. It would be better if Nintendo had it's own event and streamed it from the Nintendo Store or something like they did Pokken. It would likely get comparable numbers (decent numbers). Then hold a booth at Evo for people to try out.

It's pointless to include things like Nidhogg, Turbo, Windjammers, and Skullgirls when you're going to include something like UMvC3 or Killer Instinct in the list just on brand name alone. Those never had chance from the start.

If overall space, time and numbers are a problem in general at Evo then they should start capping how many entrants are allowed overall and per game. Or seriously expand the event from three days to four. Start that Thursday instead of that Friday with some games fully ending that Friday or Saturday or Sunday.

I guess I really just don't like this idea of almost tricking money out of some people. Building up false hope and engineering animosity amongst the different groups. They should have just made a choice regarding what the 9th game was going to be and just dealt with the fallout.

You thought Marvel was dead. But this summer, the dead shall rise...

Ahem. Marvel fans are referred to as Marvel Minions.

For example Pokken had the 4th highest number of entrants last year behind SFV, Smash 4, Smash Melee and it's numbers were above 1000. Why does it have to fight for a spot like this?

Pokken had a high number of entrants, but unfortunately it's viewership was too low.

UMvC3 has broken through the $9k barrier. Let's see if we can get to $10k before the end of the day.

And I haven't even donated yet. Waiting to see what some whale is willing to donate for another game before I go in. I'm going to ensure Marvel is there on Sunday, don't care how much of my money i'll have to throw in to make it happen.

You.....I like you.

I'd throw more money at Mahvel, but the Switch has a death-grip on my wallet.

Because it's not about which games deserve to be in the lineup.

Pokken had a high number of entrants, but unfortunately it's viewership was too low.

If viewership had anything to do with EVO's decisions, then Melee would still be in on Sunday instead of Smash 4. Viewership has the least to do with Pokken's exclusion.

Donating to Arms seems stupid and reeks of fanboyism. The game doesn't exist yet, no one knows anything about how it plays or what kind of roster it has (beyond some press impressions, some of which are negative) and whether it has any depth or longevity. It could be a good game, but we just don't know yet! We don't know if the competitive players will take to it, if the nets will be stable, if the viewership will be there, etc. So, reaching $1200 in donations seems insane to me.

UMvC3: $9,051
Pokken: $6,884
Killer Instinct: $4,249
Windjammers: $1,383
Arms: $1,310
Skullgirls: $635
Super Turbo: $563
MKXL: $135
Nidhogg: $35

I was thinking about throwing some money behind Skullgirls, because I still feel bad that it got so close and barely lost in the end against Melee, but it looks like the SG community really doesn't care about EVO anymore. I guess Combo Breaker is enough for them, which I really admire. Too many games' communities place too much emphasis on EVO above every other tournament. It'll probably still be seen as a "dead game" because it isn't at EVO, but if they don't care about that then I wont care about it either.

I guess that leaves Pokken as my choice. Nothing against Marvel and KI of course, I just like watching Pokken more.

W00t Marvel at over $9,000 more donation drives to come this weekend when the Marvel gods join together at FGTV house.

EVO has put games on the line up that have not been released yet. That is not new although those games generally have some legacy of fighting game series and develop support (plus usually comes out on an established console).

ARMS, on the other hand, is being made by the same company that try to get Melee off EVO, is being released on an unreleased console (so questions about logistics/perormance) and the game has no legacy/history as its a new IP. It's a pure roll of the dice and it taking a slot over other fighting game series like DOA is a slap in the face.

A slap in the face by who? It's a fan/community vote.

Doesn't the nature of this vote turn it into "which game has the richest fans" rather than "which game has the most fans"? At least it's benefiting charity.

I agree with ARMS not being a good choice for EVO, but the Nintendo that tried to get Melee out of EVO isn't the Nintendo we're dealing with anymore. Both Melee and Smash U have been at EVO and on stream enough times to let me believe that if ARMS somehow won the vote at was at EVO that we'd see no problems from Nintendo. Hell, they'd probably help by providing Switches and controllers.

Still, you're 100% right about ARMS being unproven.

Pokken peaked at a little less than 24k while Smash 4 did it at 71k. It certainly wasn't the only reason, but I still believe it weighed on the decision.

I would argue that's missing the point.

I think it's clear that EVO wants viewership on both Saturday and Sunday this year. GG obviously draws more viewers than BB. Melee obviously draws more viewers than Smash 4.

Saturday is going to be worth watching this year, and much harder for everyone to just ignore and only plan to watch Sunday. I'm sure Melee will headline the evening as well.

On the subject of Pokken, I imagine Nintendo dropped their support for it, and thus it went to the backburner to see if the community wants to support it.

Wanted Windjammers or Nidhogg, but another year of Mahvel isn't terrible. I kinda wanted UMvC3 to end with Chris G's victory and the manifestation of THUGGERY coming on stage, but maybe we can get a just as exciting sendoff to UMvC3 this year as well.

Chris Gzus won Evo and the fucking Ghost of Marvel 2 challenged him on stage. You can't script a better end for marvel.

With Chris/morridoom winning, it was the perfect UMvC3 send off.

Look, my love of MAH-VEL shall not waver, but last year was truly a sendoff year with ChrisG winning.

A surprise meal MvC3 had a great send-off last year. I'm ok with it skipping.

After Chris G's well-deserved win, I feel the same.

"Let's have a tournament every year until the player I want to win wins it, and then stop" is pretty stupid.

I'm more shocked that they didn't just say fuck it, put Marvel 3 in there to keep the tradition of Marvel @ Evo alive.

Marvel would get more views/entrants than most of the actual games on the Evo roster anyways, especially with Infinite hype. It would be up in every category over last year, I think.

"Let's have a tournament every year until the player I want to win wins it, and then stop" is pretty stupid.

I don't think this sentiment is exactly about that. It's more that Chris G was the only one in the upper echelon of Marvel 3 players that hadn't yet won EVO. Now that he has, all the gods have won.

It does feel complete in that sense, though a part of me will always wish PR Balrog had stuck with the game as he could've stayed one of the gods.

"Gods".

I'm still hoping IHeartJustice makes it on stream if he goes to Evo.

Pokken is no longer a new game, and you don't have Nintendo/Namco/TPC pushing it like last year, so it's on the voting list. Plus 24K is more than most fighters, especially for a brand new game with no community to start with.

I would argue that's missing the point.

When has Saturday not been worth watching or ignored? Semi-finals on Saturday have the most drama.

I don't know why Marvel has to be voted it, especially with MVCI in the works. It would have been better to have Marvel in the lineup and let a different game get that spotlight.

again, the text had nothing explaining why its boring, only that it apparently just is.
its not just this one poster, its seemingly very common for the rest of the fgc to be inexplicably angry about a game they dont seem to understand.

its not just smash too, this kind of thing

Please no Pokken it was bad enough at Evo 2016.

but whats bad about it?

This sentiment is a total lost cause
