EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

I feel like pokken would gain more from losing then actually winning.

Pokken has already shown itself to be impressive simply by the fact it is keeping pace with one of the FGC's most beloved games. Even if it doesn't win, it will still have made a considerable impression based on the fact that it did as well as it did.

Now if it wins, I think the rivalry will have made so much salt that even if it has the most intense and exciting tournament with a variety of interesting and engaging players that it will still be stigmatized and downplayed.

This isn't necessarily a comment on the people in the FGC, just on the nature of a beloved franchise competing with an outsider in a bid war.

TL;DR Marvel = Ridley, Pokken = Duck Hunt, Donation Money = Daddy Sakurai?

Pokken was the youngest game last year so it made sense it was "boring", as players have little time to learn their characters, develop the meta and else.

I am very surprised it has a chance at winning the vote, goes to show the power of the Pokemon fandom. Marvel should still win, but money talks.

They are only $500 away, its anyone's game.

Last time he was in chat he said he still plans to drop it if anything is close.

He is legit as fuck. Dude is a Dr, owns a cute pet pig, has hella sexy gf, and drives the most fucking ham cars. He be living.
This is why I wish I was getting dat Computer Engineering &/or major Broadway role money now. The life of a college kid isn't an easy one financially (I was barely able to afford the Switch & Zelda, and I had to bring my own lunch for the last 2 months).

I enjoy playing Pokken but it was dull as dishwater to watch last year and the Wii U version has seemingly been abandoned by the developer. It doesn't deserve to be at Evo.

Marvel and KI are much better picks.

Remember when I mentioned that the end of Wii U production may make things difficult for Pokkén to attract new players (same for Smash 4)? Yeah, Walmart now sells their Wii Us for about $400. Keep in mind that you need 2 Wii Us for one competitive Pokkén set-up. Obviously that isn't an issue for Smash 4, but they'll still run into issues in terms of attracting new players in the near future.

The Pokémon Company, Bandai Namco, you guys may want to look into a Switch port if you want to keep the competitive scene alive for the long-term.

Nothing but love Neoxon. <3

Thanks. We may not agree on everything, but we agree on what truly matters, Mahvel.

Skullgirls says nah

If that's what matters then KI should be winning.

I think his argument isn't really about what should be voted for, but rather what better fits a major tournament. This vote is a popularity contest by the general community, not a method to determine the most fitting game.

UMVC3 is a complete, mature game at this point. Pokken Wii U has missing characters, that should disqualify it immediately.

If it was within my power I would give KI Injustice 2's spot! I think it's a shame that it will miss out this year.

It's not even a popularity contest.

It's a "which fanbase has the most disposable income" contest. You can win this "contest" if you have just 10 people willing to donate $10k to their game.

That's what they said about Skullgirls. Now it's dead.

Yeah getting played vs not played at evo is a very large difference in exposure.

I hope they never do this again.

Honestly it seems like the evo organizers come up with bad ideas every year. lol how does that happen every year?! Do they have a group think mentality when they're planning for this shit?

Wait what about adding an extra game and supporting charity is bad? Am I missing something?

They've already raised over $40,000 for charity

How is this a bad idea

They're putting the games against each other, thus starting unwarranted hate and arguing about which game deserves it more. It's sad to see people shit on Pokken or Marvel just because. I think they're great games in their own right, but it's one or the other.

Pokken was SO FUCKING BORING last year. jesus. I mean, Marvel might be old but that shit is still hype to watch, and I love KI (and would put that in if I had ot choose) but it is out of this, so it comes down to: Watching a game that is actually fun to watch, or not watching evo for the block Pokken is on.

I gotta echo the feelings that Pokken is spectating trash.

well Pokken is now at 1k away from Marvel and with the final days coming up things should start heating up now
I gotta echo the feelings that Pokken is spectating trash.

Yep. I have faith in Pokken...but Marvel is more hype. I play Pokken and it's bland as hell to watch.

There are better ways to raise money for charity that don't involve pitting gaming communities against each other.

Yep. Especially for someone like me who's in the UK/Europe where none of this event effects me. Not gonna donate for a tournament, especially in this manner.

People shit talking on forums is well worth the positive impact the donation will have imo

This contest isn't starting anything. The hate between fans of Nintendo kideo non-games and fans of the same reheated bland fighting game product was already there.

People are gonna shit on other games regardless if there's a donation incentive or not.

Who gives a shit about spectating? This is about what people are going to play.

Whats a skullgirls? :P
jkjk

Then its a lose-lose situation.
It doesn't get in and the decline almost all games face (especially because of logistical issues) continues. Living entirely on participants in tourneys, while having very low general viewership.

OR

It does get in but cant find the ability to be considered legitimate due to the fact it "stole" mahvels spot

is this the first time you guys have participated in any fgc event?

Nice this is so close toward the end, should be a fun last couple days.

Since I don't think I can go this year, go Marvel, way more fun to watch.

No it's not and I don't know what that has to do with raising money for charity.

If they actually want to raise money for charity then they can take cuts from tournament attendees (both spectators and players) and put them towards charity. Of course they aren't actually going to do that so that's why we have this.

Who gives a shit about spectating? This is about what people are going to play.

This is also (and I'd say more) about what people are going to watch being played at EVO and the Sunday finals at the arena.

I mean, your post is just some disingenuous shit and I'm not sure if I should take it seriously. I don't play any of these games, I'm certainly not going to play them at EVO, so at least, to me, being spectating friendly matters.

You do realize that is a third party selling at the wal-mart site, right?

That is like saying Amazon is selling Ike Amiibo at 30.

Worth pointing out again that ~65% of the final donation amounts for both Smash and Skullgirls the last time they did this came in the last 24 hours (as well as ST IIRC). Nothing up until this point is particularly relevant IMO.

People are gonna shit on other games regardless if there's a donation incentive or not.

Very true, but this kind of directly supports it.

It's a weird thing because it's ultimately for charity, but I feel like it kind of directly undercuts the idea of Evo being a community thing when this is just directly pitting communities against each other. It doesn't really bother me but it feels like this is just Evo staff using this as a cop out to avoid getting shit from communities about their game not being included. People are STILL salty about the last one from years ago, and it's going to happen again this time (especially if Marvel doesn't make it). It's kind of messy and I don't think they should go down this route again honestly.

I've been looking for other alternatives online, & all that come up are mostly eBay sellers. Most stores don't sell new Wii Us, anymore. And those who do are like Walmart, using third party vendors. Given how rare the Wii U will be, the price hike isn't surprising. I just didn't expect said price hike to happen this soon. It just highlights the problem that the Wii U's end of production will pose a problem for Pokkén (as well as Smash 4) in terms of getting new people on-board until a Switch port is announced.

Imagine if EVO decides to do only 6 games in the future and ALL of them have to be money hatted in.

The riots would be insane. Smash players would be split among 4 and Melee (as if they aren't so splintered already), Capcom players would be split among SFV and Marvel Infinite, anime players among BB and GG... it would be a huge mess.

But hey it's fine if it's going to charity.

Haha 😂 At the thought of Evo ever doing that. MrWiz would choke on his McRib.

Evo the same people that took donated money & put Skisonic through school...a grown ass man that had close ties to SRK.

Hell I wonder if evo finds a shady way to wright off donated amount as tax deductible somehow.

I'm totally down for this. Having the various communities fight it out gladiatorial style for the right to survive is great entertainment, and it'd kill off weaker games like the WB and Anime games. Hell, don't even bother with the charity shit and just have it all go directly into Wiz's bank account. Sell it as crowdfunding EVO. It'd be great.
I'm completely serious
.

You can still buy a Wii U directly from Nintendo for $200: https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/us/p....remap=false&productId=prod150200&categoryId=

I have bought from here before, they say its refurbished, but it was actually new.
