afaik pokken @ evo2016 had far more entrants and pot size than umvc3 (both had some of the higher entrants, but now theyre both viewers choice?)

Well first of all you are comparing a brand new game to an old game. Marvel 3 like Melee has lasted well beyond the competitive expiration date of the average fighting games these days. In the time that Marvel 3 released to today, I can list 20 fighting games that have come and gone since then. Compare UMVC3's first year to Pokken's.

Secondly, part of EVO selection is estimating entrants for next year as well. They generally use tournaments held in the year to gauge that. As you can see that spreadsheet, Pokken was not even played in many tournaments and even when it did its average wasn't even higher than Marvel 3's. Based on that criteria, the EVO staff probably predicted that it would see a sharp decline in entrants the following year.

It was probably a tough call for them among the 3 (Marvel, KI and Pokken). The games that are at EVO right now all lean towards being new with the only exception being Melee (and that's downgraded to Saturday now). There is good reason to include any of these 3 games as the 9th game, KI is one of the few games that has had an upward trend in entrants and had its PC release. Marvel 3 has been a mainstay, gets decent entrants though on a decline, gets played at tournaments year round, got new ports and has a new version upcoming next year. Pokken had big entrants last year and has a sizeable community. So yeah it was a tough call for them which made it easier for them to set up the drive.

i would say he easily is. dude is unreal w both reg jean and dark phoenix. he's the only phoenix that i see consistently survive vs ouroboros and multiple reps of spiral swords

It would be interesting to know how they guage potential future entrants. Worlds for pokken had two Japanese players in grands (even though tonosama couldnt attend), and get a big turnout. Japanese players seem pretty keen on pokken @ evo too. But then locals have been a pretty small community compared to some of the other fighting games. I dont even really know who is attending CEO 2017 for the game yet.

Based on past EVO seems to be a combination of the following:

*Past EVO performances (like a hype grand finals/top 8/story)
*EVO entrants and year round tournaments.
*Money hats (you know this was going to be on the list)
*MrWiz's own bias.
*Logistics of the game.
*Release schedule of the game (ie. How new it is)
*Post release support/expansion of the game and how it is received
*International presence/competition

And occasionally they throw in a wild card to mix it up. Pokken was that game last year. This year was two anime games from ArkSys which has never happened before plus the donation drive. Otherwise EVO has been fairly predictable in its games in the past. I can already start to make predictions on 2018 EVO.

He has a reputation of being a bit of a mooch/freeloader and still jipping (sp?) people when he does have money.

Bummed about how the rest community has just not shown up for KI either. Can't say I'm not disappointed.

Oh well. Hopefully Pokken at least makes it.

Yeah it's going to be completely devoid of hype no matter what game is there.

The Saturday top 32 to top 16 though... that's where all the hype is going to be and that's why you would want to be at EVO.


Oh by the way, I didn't announce it but if Marvel 3 makes it at EVO I will be attending EVO for the first time. My schedule is kinda clear that week first time in a long time ago and I am going to jack this opportunity.

I wonder if they would keep it at the same time as usual. Settling the top 8 at midnight and then having everyone back at 8am is rough. Although I think a game just did this 2-3 years ago.

P4A + Xrd happened before, but at the time ASW have dropped console support for P4A and they played an outdated version at EVO, still though!
