Ex-Objectivist-Age: Thread of compromise, pragmatism, reason

Proud to say I never was into any of that crap. I saw Ayn Rand for the zealot she was when I first came into contact with her philosophies, and never looked back. Good on those who were once enamored with her but now see how irrational and selfish those ideals really are.

I will admit I was a bit of an Objectivist during my teen years, the older I get the further left I go, I am now a raging pinko commie.

This quote seems appropriate:

I'm really glad that I didn't encounter Rand in high school because I think I would have been susceptible to that kind of thinking.

Yeah, that sums it up well.

I guess it largely depends on your emotional and intellectual maturity during the "point of contact", as it were. It works on a curve. If you're not too bright you won't give it a shit. If you're smart, and you know it, Rand has a lot of appeal - "the world is trying to persecute me for my greatness!" You sort of have to be smart and emotionally balanced to resist the call of something like that. Smart enough to know what it means, but wise enough to understand the implications of such belief. Some people just develop on different levels, I guess.

What mystifies me are those who hold on to those beliefs once they enter the real world and the "joys of productivity" sort of lose their mystique. In my experience, the only people who manage to hold on to objectivism into adulthood tend to have been born with silver spoons in their mouths.

I only just realized this thread got started because of my post.

It was phrased more rudely than I typically present something, but if it works...! It's just a bit weird for me as I've never had a thread started specifically for some of the shit I post before, ah-ha.
You gave voice to a number of my frustrations with the mindset that I wished I'd posted myself. Thanks!

Pseudo-bump: Has anyone read or heard of Steve Ditko's "Mr. A" comic, basically an author tract about objectivism and absolutist morality?

Mostly I'm just curious if the topic of the thread is still of interest to anyone.

Your picture doesn't work, DD. I was actually reading through this thread again at the weekend.

Yeah, I don't know why, but I felt like revisiting it.
