Explain to me this pony thing

my entire life i have hated bronies. turns out that i was just ashamed of who i was, a guy attracted to pastel horses.

How many of these people are Sonic fans too?

Enough for that^ to happen, I guess.

...

...wait what the fuck why are DK and Yoshi there.

I consider myself a pretty openminded dude, but i'm sorry, fucking pluche animals and obsessing over a tv show with drawn ponies is pretty much were i draw the line.
I mean i won't stop you, but you have to admitt it is kinda weird.

It's boring.

I would trade every single episode of MLP for one more hour of Young Justice.

MLP is a pretty good show. It's entertaining and the characters are likeable. I don't think it's as good as Power Puff Girls and Foster's though. Also don't understand the huge following behind it, but whatever.

So I see it like this. I'm 22 and still have what some would see as childish hobbies/interests. Quick list

Dragonball Z
Power Rangers
Sonic
Disney
Marvel/DC
Cartoons from childhood.

Now some people may find my interest in those as "wrong" or "childish" I find the universes compelling so its something that interests me.

Many of those fan bases and sci fi fan bases have the "obsessives" the people who draw/write erotic fiction. Cosplay, Roleplay as the characters but much of the fan base is more reasonable and adjusted. I'm a perfectly social member of society. I've got a girlfriend of 3 years I've had numerous previous relationships. Easy to talk to, Large numbers of friends ect.

Bronies do strike me as odd, I can't see anything compelling about the universe but then I remember the world is full of people Ill never understand like the Twilight fanbase or those people who wanted to commit suicide because they could not live on the planet from Avatar.

Different strokes for different folks. If its not harming you then leave them be. Maybe the obsessives should be discouraged because ultimately it can lead it real life problems like becoming socially inept or drive people towards more and more taboo/illegal subjects.

I have mentioned the show to a few friends, few even went on to like the show. Honestly, my enjoyment of the show seems no more out of place than me enjoying a good Disney film.

That being said, I enjoy the show, and some aspects of the fandom (few pony artists I like), but the show isn't my life or who I am.

This, pretty much. When you let a show define your life you've gone too far.

The old NeoGAF before Evilore's midlife crisis would have locked this thread on page 1. Gotta say though, Brony-GAF are like moths to a lightbulb for these clusterfucks.

Whilst I find this whole brony thing pathetic, I just let these people do what they want as long as they don't go on a killing spree or bother me in any way with it.

You know what I am fine is middle aged men like the show heck I still watch spongebob sometimes its hilarious (possibly nostalgia) but what I don't like is people acting like some of the fanbase does not have ulterior motives (if you know what I mean). What percentage of the fanbase has these motives though is something we will never find out.

People who fantasize about children are mentally ill, and are a danger to society. Yeah, they can't help what they're attracted to, but they can get therapy, and prevent themselves from hurting anyone.

It's naive to assume their fantasies will stay just that, and not develop into anything else.

Well no they can't because of the knee-jerk reaction most people would have. If it was possible for them to calmly say "Yeah I have these fucked up thoughts about kids, I can't stop them, I'm worried I'll act on them can I get some help" and society would say "Cool bro, we have this system set up to help you deal" instead of "OH MY GOD BURN" then it'd be a viable option.

But yeah you can't help what you're attracted to but you CAN help how you act. That's part of being a rational human being. If you can't control your actions you're generally considered mentally ill.

And I'd argue a great deal of fantasies never develop in to reality. How many of you have actually had a threesome or whatever?

Well good, since I never said that. I replied to a post almost identical to yours pages and pages ago:

No, it shouldn't be treated as 'normal'. It shouldn't be accepted as normal, just as having the urge to kill shouldn't be accepted as normal. However, there's a difference between viewing something as normal and wanting to kill others for it. Again, I never said people who fantasized about children should 'die in a fucking fire', or suffer any sort of physical pain. It should be viewed in a way by society that someone isn't ashamed to get help for it, but it shouldn't be shrugged off as normal behaviour.
It is not fucking normal.

To clarify, yes we as a society should be more open to people coming forward who are mentally ill, especially those who may be a danger to society in the future. Yes, paedophiles should be more comfortable to get help for their mental illness. But no, it should not be treated as normal. Treating it as normal would have the exact same effect as treating it like how it is now in most places. Why would people get mental help if it's a totally normal thing to be fantasizing about?

Like I said, there's a huge difference between treating it as 'normal' and wanting to kill people for even thinking fucked up thoughts.

And I'd argue a great deal of fantasies never develop in to reality. How many of you have actually had a threesome or whatever?

That's an insanely huge difference. Fantasizing about having a threesome isn't a mental illness that could get worse and worse over time without therapy.

I still feel like they're all in on some huge inside joke and just trying to be incredibly ironic. They just have to be.

But the fantasies don't inevitably become reality, which was the crux of what you're saying. The nature of the fantasy is irrelevant.

You're seriously comparing a mentally ill person fantasizing over children to anyone who has sexual fantasies? Someone who is mentally ill and is attracted to children is a danger to society because they may eventually act on their impulses. There's always a risk, that's the point. People who fantasize over children need mental help to prevent themselves from hurting anyone, I'm not sure what your issue is with that.

And the nature of the fantasy is very much relevant.

Why are pedos coming up in the brony thread? I mean, they're a bit odd but let's not paint too many labels here.

Read the thread? It was an argument that came up hours ago that died after everything that could've been said was said and now another poster decided to continue it just now.

The way I see it, they make me look cooler just by comparison.

I see we both have the same "brony-psychopath" fear...

That's not surprising. I'm assuming that the community's creations are made for adults, whereas the actual show is made for small children. You should like stuff made for adults more than stuff made for children.

Even the official comics go a bit more on the dark side.

I think it's that one anime that creeps me out more at the moment. Oriemo or whatever it's called. And that shit is aired on TV isn't it?

Incest crap. unbelievable. Actually when it comes to Japan, believable.

Pretty much all fanboys of everything is pretty much bad. They go far far overboard to the point it's ridiculous and usually disgusting.

Also, Jessica Nigri is pitiful.

Lol wtf??

Apparently if you're an adult, and you're a fan of MLP, you're a pedophile.

But hey, I guess (hot) women are an exception, because...?

Let's be honest here: the attitude towards bronies has little to do with MLP, and much to do with cultural gender norms and the general perception of the socially awkward.

Again, I can't help but note the irony of gamers chastising a group for not conforming to social norms. Learn some gaming history, for fuck's sakes.

Except there's games aimed at adults, regardless of whether they succeed at touching mature themes. MLP is a show aimed.at.little.girls.

Why is that incredibly relevant detail always put aside?

Primarily yes. So are Disney Princess films, but they were still made with the intent to be enjoyed by a wider audience, just as this new Pony series was.

I don't see guys cosplaying as Ariel or Cinderella or using Princess avatars online. Nor turning everything into a Disneyfied meme. Nor preaching actively their love for everything Disney on youtube.

Again: I don't have a problem with people liking the show. It's the massive, woshipping-on-a-cult-level fanbase I can't understand.
