Is it though? I wrote this a while back on the subject:
Here's the thing though; MLP isn't about ponies; it's about people.
Let's get one thing straight here; a pony is a horse. A horse is a large, not particularly bright animal whose claim to fame is being... transport. They munch hay. They wander around the place. The sometimes do tricks, if you train them.
It's only on a very, very superficial level that the characters of MLP are actually ponies. They kinda look like ponies, in that they're quadrapeds, and they have some of the basic features, like tails and manes. In almost every other respect however, they're people, like the robots in Transformers are people, or the lions in The Lion King are people. They live in houses, They have cities, with railroads and buildings and government. They have jobs, and they design clothes, and they make jam and pastries. They pick apples to sell, and they borrow books from the library. They particpate in races and obstacle courses and festivals, and they celebrate Halloween and Christmas and Valentines Day. They argue like people, and they work together like people, and they solve problems like people. They come to the aid of their friends like people and they celebrate and party like people.
MLP is about people. It might be hidden under the charming candy-coloured veneer of cute character design and funny pun names, but it's a fact. The interesting thing is that the "pony" trappings are at the same time one of the things that makes the show so endearing, and also one of the things that makes it so divisive. A male, or even an adult liking a show about *people* isn't nearly as scandalous as if it were a show about *ponies*. People are people, but only girls like ponies... right?
