No, it has absolutely NOT been confirmed. It's still based on one tweet from a single source.
The same source appeared on CNN later and backed off the claim.

(That's not a joke either, kind of sounds like one given today's events. But they would not say fatalily numbers and he would not either)

It sounded like the guy was giving a rough estimate of how many he thought could have died and a bunch of people ran with it like it was confirmed dead toll

Sky news (sorry no link as I'm getting it from TV) are saying 60-70 dead. Damn..

Don't know if it's a trustworthy source though. They don't even say where they got their number from.

edit
Maybe they got it from that tweet too so you might want to ignore this post.

So far they've mentioned that 75-100 Buildings in the area were either heavily damaged or destroyed, with over 200 injured, and 40 critically injured.

Wow, this is awful (especially being so close to home). We're having crazy winds out of the south, I wonder how that will affect the DFW area and all towns in between?

It'll be switching to the north very soon, and at about 30 mph. DFW folks should be cognizant of air quality tomorrow.

That video was fucking insane. Idk why but I was just expecting to see the fire maybe a little thing. That was huge. Crazy seeing the flames then a second later the sound of the blast. I can't even imagine how loud it was and how it must have felt. Hope they are OK.

Not a good week :(

Holy crap 60-70 dead, that is insane. What the fuck man, these last couple of days have been crazy.

Way to go NBC affiliate interviewing random guy who literally knows nothing about this situation lol

More terrible news, this is crazy, I take it a lot of those killed were firefighters?.

A fire that size they aren't sending anybody in. They'll set up defensive positions. Dozens of companies and firefighters staging around. They might have a few ladder trucks (if they actually can afford to have one) trying to shoot some water or chemicals down and guys on the outside trying to spray water on, but for the most part, they aren't sending anybody in. You just hope it burns itself out to some degree. The scary thing is, a small town like that, there were probably tons of first responders out there at the staging area/command post.

Also, holy fuck, Piers Morgan is the worst. These aren't part time firefighters/EMS. A lot of these men and women are volunteers and do this full time in combination with their real jobs. Sorry, I shouldn't be so negative. I know probably a lot of people don't relalize how much the fire/EMS service in rural/small town America is reliant upon on volunteers.

A horrific explosion that is not only going to cripple a small town but affect literally thousands of people all over the Texas area? Going to class tomorrow is going to be awful.

Also, for whoever mentioned it earlier Houston is notorious for not having any zoning laws but they're the only ones that really stick out. Most towns have some form of zoning laws however strict they may be.

What is funny is Piers had just been saying something like "I shouldn't call them part-time, they need to be ready to respond all the time." Next segment - "part-time firefighters"

I went on Google Maps and tried to Streetview the exact location, based on the tree and the orientation of the buildings. There's a lot of open space east and north of the plant, but I couldn't find a place where you can see the plant so well.

I think he drove off the road to get a bit closer for the video.

MT @MichaelSkolnik: West Fertilizer Co. reported having as much as 54,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia. The OKC bomb was 4800 pounds. #WestTX

This is horrible, first the Boston explosion and now this, and it happened in the state I live in D; hope everything turns out ok

Wow! I figured with the cable networks not making much of the story not many died so turned off my TV. Condolences. What a terrible week.

And fuck, whenever a tragedy hits the US it is like it happens back to back with another one.

Man, that had to be a killer shockwave from the blast.

Some cargo plane pilot had a picture of it as he flew by and said he felt the blast from 4000 ft. up.

I'm a little behind on current developments. Do we know how the original fire started? I read earlier that the fire dept was already there fighting a fire when the explosion happened.

If the mayor said,

Then I reckon there would be more than 60 deaths unfortunately..

Seems like the mayor was on site. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/mayor-fire-crews-texas-plant-blast-18984402#.UW-AdLK2QsY

"Mayor Tommy Muska says he's a volunteer firefighter himself and his helmet was knocked off when the explosion tore through the West Fertilizer plant around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Muska says the blast badly damaged buildings for a five-block radius around the plant, including a nearby middle school and nursing home. He says the nursing home's 133 residents were safely evacuated."

If more than 60 dead, it would be bodies everywhere, and the mayor should definitely take notice. I think (hope) the toll will be less than 10.

Yikes, this is crazy. I'm really concerned for all the first responders on the scene before the explosion.

Also getting REALLY tired of news sites running unconfirmed reports. This needs to stop.

EDIT:

Hopefully, the surrounding area was evacuated before the explosion, which is what it sounds like based on the mayor's statement. Hopefully.

I would assume that is standard procedure when an industrial plant is on fire, due to concerns of chemicals being released into the air.

It's a direct result of the 24 hour news cycle and wanting to be the first to report news.

I really hope that the past couple months would eventually fix these issues, but I'm not hopeful.

.

I'm surprised we didn't hear about an Arabic man running from the scene.

But in all seriousness, it does sound like the fatalities will be quite a bit lower than originally guessed at by some. But the question still remains: What bungling town manager or mayor allowed the town to expand around a fertilizer plant?
