I mean within the last week, as in they just saw the news now and just posted it
Oh, but that comment was left last week. None the less this is all goddamn confusing and the world needs to stop being this way for like a day.

Initial call to dispatch reporting firefighters down, requesting further aid:

Can I just say EMS and Fire deserve serious props this week? Holy crap.

Especially the volunteer guys and gals. I can't imagine doing it. These are men and women that have every day regular jobs, but still volunteer to be EMS and firefighters for no pay and a shit load of constant training. Just a regular fire they might be out there for a few hours whether it's Tuesday, Christmas or their kid's birthday. Imagine working your day job, but having to run calls during the day or at night after you got off work.

Wow that explosion. There has to be some mandate that if the plant ever was on fire that first responders need to keep distance. They were probably helping people evacuate though.

The fear in her voice makes me feel so bad. Freaking idiot risking his child's life just to film the fire.

It really pisses me off. He's got what looks like most of his family with him in the car and he's taping a fertilizer plant on fire.

Unless he didn't know it was a fertilizer plant. Then it's just reeealy unfortunate.

Holy shit. That's insane how close he is to that explosion. Also I think this begs the question of why would you densely pack an area around a fertilizer plant? Seems like putting Doctor's Offices and Retirement homes around it would be a bad idea, no?

Lots of industrial sites were built before zoning was a thing.

that video is fucking crazy. That dad is an idiot although I don't think that kind of explosion would have crossed my mind.

Its a massive explosion given the small size of the fire. Nobody probably expected it that wasnt knowledgeable about fertilizer.

Ammonium nitrate plants have a number of safety features, with the simplest (and usually effective) being to store the ammonium nitrate in open containers. This way, if there is a fire, the pressure does not build up and cause the explosion. That is why the fire went on for a bit; fire fighters are supposed to have enough time to put the fire out. I was in College Station a few years ago when a plant in Bryan (twin city to the north) had a fire. It went on for a few hours and people were asked to evacuate south away from the fumes, but it was kept under control and no explosion occurred. I will be interested to see what safety feature failed in this event.

Very sad, hopefully not as bad as Texas City.

Can't be said enough - they're being pushed to the limit in various situations and their response speed and courage to run into these situations is amazing.

For real. My dad was a firefighter for 23 years, it was his second job also. He died of cancer at a young age but there was over 1,000 people at his funeral. What struck me was that my dad was never a social man, he was two busy working two jobs and I can never remember him going out with friends for a night, but he touched so many people through his job to have a turnout like that.

The Dr talking on the KHOU feed doesn't seem right. Really detached as he's talking about personally knowing the dead. It's really eerie.

yeah, it's easy to call him dumb but I honestly did not expect the explosion to be that huge in the video. Who would have?

If he knew it was a fertalizer plant, he's an idiot. But from that video he is really, really far away and the explosion was huge. In rural residential fire situations, the fire department does block off roadways, but usually only for a few blocks. I mean, there's no engines or personel around him. It's not like he was across the block. Hell, I'm sure there were people probably closer in nearby residential areas with their iPhones trying to take video. I mean, he honestly is really far away. If I were going out to that scene, I probably wouldn't even have thought twice about breaking out the camera until I got much closer.

I'm talking to a friend who lives near there and she's saying that local stations are starting to report 60 deaths.

I'm not sure how confirmed that is, but according to her that's what they're reporting.

Explosions like these are not something you should take lightly.

If you are near something that's on fire and volatile, please move away as far as you can.

I feel sorry for the guy and his daughter. I feel even more sorry for the people closer to the plant:(

I mean, fuck I could feel the explosion IN the video.

Yeah or the people still alive but wounded that they can't get to since they had to back off due to the possibility of a second explosion.

Must be a horrific scene.

Holy fuck. That video is terrifying. It looks like a pretty bad fire but nothing all that crazy. But that explosion was HUGE. It dwarfed the fire like it was nothing.

This is not looking good. =(
