Extremely Dubious Rumor: Sony briefly reveals Syphon Filter 4

I wonder what type of engine SCE London will come up with. I'd be much more comfortable if they borrowed the Uncharted engine and tweaked it.

I don't care about the engine really, as long as this game is by Bend Studio and not any other studio.

Great news, if true.

It's totally going to be a reboot given how the last PSP game ended.

I hope they don't screw this up.. I wonder what type of engine SCE London will come up with. I'd be much more comfortable if they borrowed the Uncharted engine and tweaked it.

if it's a reboot i don't think it will be called Syphon Filter 4. *sigh* we will be getting yet another reboot titled as the original...

(unless this is totally fake)

I feel a little old when some of you show no acknowledgment/respect for SP2, one of the finest spy games of all time.

PS1 era games should be mandatory before you start playing video games. Government should include it in HS education degree.

how come no one from gaf caught it if the post was up for more than an hour on the blog.

Well the links point that the thing was on PlayStation forum ( community.us.playstation.com ) not the Blog.

I'm surprised it has taken this long for this to happen, if it is going to happen. I've always said that the Syphon Filter brand is a viable counterpart to something like Uncharted in the 3rd person shooter realm. They have similar potential audiences but Uncharted releases have been spread out enough to allow for SF. Sony has tried to build new franchises out of the new with MAG, and revitalize the old with SOCOM, but I think Syphon Filter always provided a real missed opportunity. Fully featured co-op campaign, solid SP, and get Zipper to work on the multiplayer and you could have a winner.

Weren't the rumours put to rest by a Sony guy not so long ago? His response to a fan's inquiry was that the series' modest success could not warrant a sequel...

I pretty much gave up on this after Uncharted was revealed as a Sony Bend project.

But I hope it happens.

There is a chance that this is not a Bend game, since ( if the story was true) the engine and the registered domains are by all SCEE :(

I for one think it's super impossible for Bend to work on two games at the same time ( since the studio is very small) , and if SF4 is not by Bend then I don't want it.

Yes, but in general that was stupid given that they never gave the series a chance on the PS3. That's where fans always wanted it to land.

Why would they call it SF4 when the last numbered game came 10 years ago and there've been other 3 games after that.

If anyhing this'd be SF 6 or 7.

NGP only could make sense based on the PSP experience with Syphon Filter but I think, given the huge potential in the PS3 market, it would be a mistake not to hit both fronts. And if the technology is anything similar, it should be dead easy.

We desperately need a GOOD STEALTH game this generation. We haven't had one yet. MGS4 and Conviction doesn't count.

I like both those games, but I agree neither really pushes its stealth mechanics. But Syphon Filter has always been more action focused, so its probably not the Droids you're looking for.

Here is what the original -removed- PlayStation forum's thread supposed to said about the game and the stealth.

Syphon Filter 4 will be a sequel to the Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow video game for PSP sytem. It will revolutionarise the aspect of stealth in games by using the latest engine developed by SCE London. It will be released in Q4 2012 for Playstation 3 system.

Sound it focus completely on stealth this time or something ( again if this entire thing was true)

I loved the Syphon Filter games on the original PlayStation. Would definitely be interested in a full fledged revival on PS3.

Logan's Shadow and Dark Mirror on PS2 (and PSP) are way better than the original games,so if you love the Ps1 Syphon Filter games, get the PS2 games, now.

Syphon filter games were always so good (xep sf3 & omega strain) yet they get such little recognition :/

I hope they get a proper sequel but I want* it to be good I don't want london studios on this...

that the first two were really big,I remember reading some crazy MGS vs Syphon Filter articles in magazines.

Now it's really SCEA's mistake, because after The Omega Strain flop, they punished Bend Studio and the series by downgraded them to handheld, making Syphon Filter a second-rate IP on a system that is completely dead in America.

I've always thought that the series has struggled to replicate what the original did so well. That first game is really, really good. And while the second is also very good, the series - including the PSP titles - have never been able to match SP1.

imho,Logan's Shadow blow Syphon Filter 1 out of the water, and eat spaghetti on it's rotten copse.

I'll be re-buying Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow when NGP/Vita comes out. Hopefully, we get another SF on either PS3 or NGP/Vita.

The PSP games are technically superior, but I'll always prefer the first 2 PSX games. They're janky as hell now, but the mission designs were more varied and memorable. I loved the unforgiving stealth missions.

Bend does online play really well. They don't need some shell studio to help them do online play.

According to that post SCEA evaluated the franchise based on the sales of Logan's Shadow, and Dark Mirror on both PSP, and PS2. They didn't meet the numbers they needed. Bend later developed Resistance: Retribution which apparently destroyed the numbers their SF PSP games put up, and that's when SCEA decided that it wasn't the developer, it wasn't the platform, it wasn't the games, but it was the franchise itself that was unappealing to audiences.

And if the fans really gave a fuck about the franchise at all, they would've bought Logan's Shadow and Dark Mirror.

Couldn't you say the same thing about Gran Turismo PSP and Peace Walker? Fans clearly love those series (just look at the sales of the recent games on the PS3) but they couldn't be bothered to buy them on the PSP.

Gran Turismo PSP isn't a good game, has huge flaws, and was overshadowed by news relating to GT5. That drove away fans. Metal Gear Solid's sales were damaged by being released after Portable Ops, and not instead of. Peace Walker also has the dubious intent that the game isn't an integral part of the story. Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow are integral parts of the Syphon Filter story made by the team who created the franchise, and were critically lauded as being the best iterations of the franchise. There wasn't a reason to not buy them, as heck, even the PSP wasn't dead in 2006 and 2007.

Also, fans had the opportunity to buy SF on the PS2, and apparently no one did.

Maybe SCEA should've manned up and called Dark Mirror Syphon Filter 4, and Logan's Shadow SF5 to boost sales. We'll never know if that would've helped.

Well even if that was the thing, I think they should give the series one chance on PS3, at least maybe Dark Mirror and Logan Shadow HD ports to test the water.

If it exists, it's probably a ps3 game.

The console needs games in 2012 too

SCE London making Syphon Filter could be interesting. That Eight Days trailer was amazing.
Also SCEE has a bunch of domain names for Syphon Filter...
