It's TERRIBLY done:

excel ‏@EXCL1_
@T4RG4 Does the demo teach you on how to use the brake rear/front I dont understand when to use it/advantages of using that particular one
Steve Hood ‏@T4RG4
@EXCL1_ If you don't know what it does you are probably not going to be faster with it.
excel ‏@EXCL1_
@T4RG4 should of added it to the YDT
Steve Hood ‏@T4RG4
@EXCL1_ We can't add everything and specialist toys are perhaps not the point on this years YDT. If you watch F1 you'll know what it does.

I've put over 400 hours into F1 2010 and 2011. I've watched F1 for years. I don't really know how to use the brake bias. Instead of actually including something useful and advanced, they just make you go in a straight line and brake. Fucking genius.

This is a great way how to learn to do PR. Just do the complete opposite of what Steve did.

Young Drivers Test is not made for us but for American reviewers that last year whined about not knowing what DRS and KERS are and the game not explaining what it is and when to use it. It was a dumb criticism because Madden also doesn't explain the rules of American football and nobody complains because they know the sport. If you don't know the sport you shouldn't be reviewing the game.

Unfortunately like always entitled reviewers refuse to admit any faults and developers have to spend the time making useless features just to please them and increase their precious metacritic score. Of course, if you are going to do a tutorial mode at least do it right. If one of your few improvements is brake bias, explain it and show the best way to use it.

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.

It's not Steve Hood's fault (Well, actually...), after all, half of the best talent did leave for Playground Games, leaving the team with pretty much nobody. I suspect that they hardly had a team capable of translating the game for 2012 standards, let alone adding anything (The Young Driver thingy was meant to be in 2011 IIRC so even that wasn't made for 2012).

This is what happens when a publishing studio turns bad. Between this, Showdown and GRID 2, I think we're watching the death of a once great racing studio.

Codemasters has been on a decline for years, well before they even got the F1 licence. I hoped they could at least put out one real racing game but after 3 years they seem to be going backwards.

I'm not surprised devs were jumping ship when playground opened, codies is supposed to be a bit of a rough place to work.

I think it wasn't from Codemasters Birmingham that people left for Playground. The only lead designer that left was Mark Russell and he's now at Ubisoft working on Watch_Dogs.

EDIT: I stand corrected, apparently some leaving to Playground were indeed from the Birmingham studio. The technical director apparently left early 2011.

So braking is very weird in this right? I just looked at the pole lap from Hamilton in Monza this weekend again and he can brake at the 100 meter sign and I have to start braking right before the 150 one to make the first turn?

That seems like a step backwards to me. I remember the brakes in 2010 were this way.

it's taken a bit of a step back from 2011 IMO. I felt that braking in 2011 was the closest to real life, whilst 2010 was off horribly, and 2012 feels off.

When we did that 2010 night the first thing I noticed was how bad the braking was compared to 2011, if it's back to that then it's a fucking disaster.

It takes ages to stop the car. I haven't played 2010 in a while but it seems braking is a lot closer to 10 than 11.

got the demo and cant face sitting thru all these mindless test driver training things, what a load of utter crap. Seriously, what were they thinking about adding all this shit? I hate this sort of thing, and absolutely loathe having to sit through it with no option to skip it. Sure, if you have to add it in, that's fine, but make if fucking optional so people with any sense don't have to sit through this patronising, boring trash.

Quit to the main menu :) But yeah an official option to skip tutorial would be good.

Yesterday I wasted 2 hours in searching for a right setup for my Fanatec CSRE.

And than I surrendered.

No way I can adjust combo of in-game Sensitivity/Linearity to match sensation I expect from the steering. I managed to find a combo that allows for 1:1 linearity with on-screen wheel/wheels and actual turning angle of my wheel (65/10, do not ask...) but it all falls apart when you have to do speed-manoeuvre. However, it was the only setting I could successfully tackle Monza with.

Also, something has happened with the "Wheel Weight" setting which now asks for a zero setting if you don't want to waste seconds in transferring front wheels over sharp turns and loosing raceline.

Also, I am still amazed there is no KERS/DRS visual HUD elements when driving from cockpit view (I love the new FOV in cockpit BTW), even when you turn on vehicle monitor. They should at least put them there.

I am also crazy because demo does not allow you to remap some of the main functionality buttons to some places, thus hurting possibility to have left/right views - which are unassigned by default - implemented logically with the back view when you have KERS/DRS mapped. That is absolutely crazy.

On another note, I am extremely positively surprised by actual FFB sensation of the F12012 on the X360 - FFB is strong and convincing and I really love it. Can't wait to download the PSN version and compare.

Huh? In 2011 there was a LED on the steering wheel for DRS (along with an audible beep saying you can use the DRS), and there was a K400 counter on the steering wheel when your pressed the KERS button that showed how much power you had left...

I know Luc, and I use it that way, but it would be very handy to have it also represented in graphical way (as ON/OFF) for users with smaller screens.

I do not have a problem on plasma, but console gamers on 32" screens could have a problem with both.

IMO They could just made it a part of the Car Monitor status screen. But nevermind, I am probably nitpicking at this point.

No, you are right.

This is why I stick with the TV Pod camera. I really like the cockpit view, especially the new one in '12, but I like to see how much KERS I have left without pressing the button. I can manage it better that way.

Ah okay, I get you. I totally understand - why not give people the option? It can't take much time to code that in! But you could say the same thing in regards to more multi-player options, like strictly defining player grid positions etc. Likely we are asking for way too much.

Came to this thread with high hopes, all of which have been ceremoniously dashed.

RIP, Codemasters. Nice knowing you.

I think my head will explode, then. This will be te first time I play F1 on a gaming PC and I'm used to the PS3 version! lol

If the PS3 version looks half as bad as the 360 version you're going to see a generational leap. 1080p (or higher, depending on your resolution), 60fps, AA, etc etc...

An hour til the demo hits Steam. Getting impatient!

Ps3 version of '11 is waaayy worse than the 360 version, dunno if they fixed it this year.

Half as bad? Are 15fps bad to you? That's basically how horrendous the PS3 version is. It WILL be a generational leap for me, you can count on that lol

After two years watching your races through the threads and Youtube videos, I'm eager to play with you guys. Your races are always amazing.

Outside of framerate and resolution increases on pc, nothing else is going to be different.

Hopefully force feedback is slightly better implemented/scaled. In the Xbox version I had to turn wheel strength to 0% and force feedback to 10% to be able to turn the wheel and I just feel like it wasn't working properly. In comparison in Forza 4 something between 80% and 100% is roughly the same strength. Fanatec CSR with latest firmware.

Also maybe people find a way to mod in harder AI for the demo? Who knows.

15fps? Yikes. The wet race at Abu Dhabi in the 2012 demo felt like 20/25 at times and that was bad enough! If I dip below 50 on PC it annoys me.

Looking forward to racing with lots of new faces, too! :)

Someone asked about what kind of specs could max out F1 2011/12 I think?

I max out F1 2011 (in DX9, it is max for what is available to me...) with my GTX 285 with factory overclocking. That's all max plus 4xAA which I consider to be pretty good AA already. I get 60 fps and dips to 45-40 in a few circuits when I get to the finish line because that's where the buildings and pit crews are. I think I had dips in like 6 tracks out of 20. And honestly they were not a detriment to the experience. That's at 1680x1050.

So, for F1 2012, anything above, starting with a 460 or 5850 should net you awesome 60fps all the way through.

I played F1 for the first time on consoles yesterday and those 30fps with dips were godawful. It's just another game on PC. It's quite gorgeous specially on rain. Aliasing was awful on 360. I don't mind 30fps. But these were just bad for a game like this.

My old 5850 couldn't max the game out in DX11. My 6950/2500k can though.
