Face-Off: Grand Theft Auto 5 on PC

I'm getting a gaming PC in this week or next. Based on this does that mean I should be able to run it at (or near) max with no issues?

Specs:
4th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K processor quad-core [4.0GHz, 8MB Shared Cache]
4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 980
8GB RAM

Need to upgrade RAM, and upgrade to an SSD though.

I'm running the game on a laptop and getting 108060fps with great settings. I think you'll be more than fine. I have 16GB of RAM though.

Man..... this thread is giving me flashbacks of the Dying Light thread and the whole gif of the LOD on trees, which was being used as a base to call the PS4 version even lower than PC lowest settings *sigh* =/

I have to ask this to any PC user here. What do they even achieve by repeating the same stuff again and again about how GTX 750ti and i3 can beat/compete with PS4. Have we reached a point where every PC game can give equal performance to PS4 on that combo? Because if we haven't, it is useless to use that as a point as few examples don't outweight the majority. The most recent example being Mortal Kombat X on PC, which would be lucky to achieve the performance of PS4 on the same setup.

Regarding this thread and GTA V, it is nice to see that Rockstar has used the delay to the best and created a very solid port for PC users. What the comparison proved was that GTA V already reached its potential on PS4/XBO but this didn't stop Rockstar from even taking it a step further on PC. Everyone should be happy, and speaking for myself, I am happy that the PS4 port was a solid effort.
The reason the i3/750Ti comparisons are being used:

1) It's interesting. That's the big one - seeing what kind of hardware on PC outputs the same level of quality on console. Just for plain curiosity reasons, its a valid discussion point.

2) PC gamers were repeatedly told in many DF threads that PC should not be included in the comparisons because of price differences. Ignoring that this is insecure, lousy reasoning in the first place, this is the answer to that.

3) It disproves the myth that you need some monster PC that costs a fortune in order to run games well.

I'm glad you're happy with the PS4 version. In terms of your question, what does anybody gain in PS4 vs XB1 comparisons repeatedly making the point that the PS4 can do better? What if somebody is also happy with the XB1 version? Why have I never seen you ask this question to those PS4 users in those threads?

Where is the game that shows that big gap between the consoles and the PC?

Show me the console that could run the thousands of troops on Total War: Attilla. There's also Star Citizen coming down the pipe.

Most interesting for me is what mid tier devs will be able to pull off in a few years, once tools and engines mature enough to allow limited resources to go a much longer way in terms of asset quality.

You're right though, PC's major strength also has a drawback (if you are ONLY concerned graphics that is). It's an open platform. There is NO financial incentive for developers to spend a lot of money pushing PC graphics tech when it doesn't make business sense to ignore the consoles. There is no Sony or Microsoft ready to whore out their wallet in order to capture those big AAA titles with high end graphics for PC exclusivity.

But you know what... I'm ok with that. Console AAA exclusives that push graphics forwards and are any good are few and far between. Out of those few objectively good ones, even less appeal to me personally.

I'm happy if, as PC gaming continues to grow, multi-plat developers give PC gamers more extra graphical goodies without necessarily writing a new renderer just for PC. I'm also happy with mid tier devs pushign the envelope in unexpected ways by making PC exclusive games in PC exlcusive genres like RTS (like Total War, like Stardocks two new projects which feature tons of units!), grand strategy and 4X (Like endless legend and Galactic Civ 3 - which use the power of PC's CPU's in non-graphical ways), and with business models that work well on PC (like the new Unreal Tournament - which looks amazing, IMHO).

Regarding the bolded, it is not about price difference as much as it is about PC owners being able to brute force their way to better performance/IQ. This kinda renders the comparison useless IMO.

Regarding the last quote, you won't ever see the PS4 vs XB1 discussion ending because of the simple fact that we are talking about fanboys here. On one side, we have the PS fans, on the other side, we have the MS fans. It is just a giant all out war TBH (as silly it is) and I don't see how PC fits here as they enjoy the best of both worlds (PC/PS4 exclusives) or (XB1/PC exclusives) and the best version of multiplatform games.

The thing that truly makes this game shine on PC is the Kb/m combination. Fuck controllers.

Driving is awful with K&M though.

I usually keep the controller on my lap and pick it up when I'm driving, but sometimes I don't even bother to return to K&M, unless it's a harder gunfight.

PC's job is to remind everyone of how ultimately stupid console fanboyism is in tech threads.

The PC release absolutely DESTROYED it's competitors this time. If we are being honest with ourselves. I mean it's a Night and day in almost all cases. Framerate at 60 at all times being it's biggest trumpet in my opinion. And I'll say that has been my experience in the 30 hours I've put in so far since release. GTA V at 60 fps and 1080p is a sublime experience. So fucking good. So R* wizards have taken my money so many damn times now

. I bought this shit on PS3/360/XBox One/PC.

Do they need to be insufferable assholes in the process?

The point is that image is invalid, not that LOD doesn't matter. Jesus.

I don't really think anyone is being an insufferable asshole here, to be honest. Just seems like some pretty run of the mill tech discussions going on.

And why is that? Even if the PC wouldn't have ultra grass that people here seem to ignore it would be valid.

The whole "grass-gate" thing comes from the XB1 version having less grass than the PS4 version. Durante used it as an example of how people downplay differences between PC and console versions, because "grass-gate" got discussed quite a lot. But those aren't equivalent comparisons because different LOD != the game never ever displaying certain patches of grass.

Now, I'm not saying grass-gate wasn't stupid by itself - no one should be surprised by minor details missing from a version supposed to run on weaker hardware - but the comparison is still technically wrong, and kicking up dust about it is like a scream for validation - which no PC user should need because they indisputably have the superior platform technically. We see a lot of rage not because people say PC isn't better, but because they don't feel the difference is big enough. Misguided opinions, maybe, but still opinions and not inaccurate statements of facts.

But what do we get? Strawmen and platform wars. This is what I perceive as being an asshole for no reason:

Pretty good I imagine, considering he set out to show, yet again that the incredibly stupid meme of 2 times performance coding to the METAL!!! bs console gamers love to spew is exactly that: bs.

You mean 900p corridors everywhere and of course, plenty of cinematic blur, with AI from 2005?

ok.

Behold the savior:

Yeah, ok, so the task of dropping the knowledge bomb on the intricacies of 3D rendering tothe masses, isn't exactly going to earn him saint-hood, but whatevs man, almost nothing we discuss here on GAF matters to anyone outside GAF.

It's a thankless job.

The martyr:

Oh, sorry, I didn't know PC gamers weren't allowed to comment without being called out for committing the crime of being PC gamers.

I don't get it.

I definitely appreciate Rockstar putting in some decent effort on the PC version even if it's way late. It's clearly head and shoulders above the console versions, and I'm glad I waited.

How much of a difference in loading times does an SSD make for this game?

I may have made a mistake by buying GTAV not through Steam, because I now have to use Rockstar's own downloader. I was sort of planning on using Steam's backup feature when I am done with it taking 65GB of my remaining 90GB SSD space, so before I install I'd like to know whether it's okay to install straight to the HDD and be done with it.

I think you're really underselling how many people who are completely unfamiliar with PC gaming pop into threads like this and spout nonsense.

Personally, I just ignore it but I can understand why people want to correct them.
Do they need to be insufferable assholes in the process?

To be fair, when you see the same ignorance completely detail threads on GAF again, and again, and again year after year, it becomes infuriating.

let's define a posts' assholishness as the number of insults per post and then we can graph it to really get an idea here. side by side comparisons and all of it.

Seriously, fuck off.

It was argued that no one was being a jerk in the thread, and you were doing so consistenly. If it makes you feel better, there are other people doing that right now, if you want me to quote them. Though this post which I'm quoting would guarantee you to be there again.

I would also have accepted "buddy", "champ" or "tiger" as my condescending moniker.

I don't think it's condescending when the post I'm replying too has literally no content besides a cheeky NO U.

i5 3570k @ 4.2
670 gtx (slightly oc'd)
8 gb ram

Wait to upgrade or will it look run as well/better than ps4?

Your computer is superior to a PS4 in every spec and the port is well-made; it will handily outperform the PS4 version.

Quoting my posts completely out fo context does not constitute avidence of me being a jerk. All it shows is that you're not above the pettiness yourself. Trying to single me out, posting stuff out of context, makes you the a jerk.

Well what do you expect? You are literally behaving like more of an asshole than anyone you're calling out in this thread.

Why? Because I don't like generalizations? Because I wrote "insufferable assholes"? Would it have been ok if I wrote "big meanies" instead? Is my wording what this fuss is about? It would be easier if you countered with content, I wouldn't have to guess it.

You think re-quoting them including the posts they quoted would change much? And I'm sorry if you think I want to single you out, but your posts really... stand out.

Given how awful the GTA IV PC port was, it's good they got their house in order. The release certainly took long enough.

Well as an innocent bystander I can confirm that your posts don't paint the picture of an unbiased and relaxed person...

You hate generalisations, but you call anyone correcting technical misconceptions "insufferable assholes". Then spend a page attacking another poster with snide remarks like "behold the saviour... and the martyr". All the while posting in a completely hostile and abrasive fashion.

Over a DF face-off.

Now they just need to fix up the GTA IV port. Not only is it extremely unoptimized, but it is riddled with terrible DRM that is due to be shut down.
