I'm glad because if someone doesn't go to my college or not a friend of mine, I don't want them even looking at my profile. That's why I dislike MySpace, because most anyone can look at my profile.Meier said:Yeah, that is annoying. They should make it where you can if you're in the same group as someone.

"People who joined Facebook because it was primarily a school-focused network may feel that it's losing a key distinction. As with the 'news feed' announcement, reception to this overhaul will come down to how well Facebook communicates. For the average student at New York University, for instance, little changes. The only people who can browse his profile before were other NYU students and that will stay the same. The change simply allows for 500 new groups to form that all operate independently on the Facebook platform. No one can browse all 9 million registered users."
Justin Bailey said:I will say this though, if facebook does end up competing with myspace then it will destroy it completely. It's better in every single way. The creators of facebook probably know this, so they may head in that direction.

ReutersNEW YORK (Reuters) - Facebook.com, which in two years has become the primary online meeting place for a generation of U.S. college students, plans to open its site to admit outsiders.
The Palo Alto, California-based company said that in coming weeks it will invite young Internet users from all walks of life to join regional Facebook networks who are not already part of a school, work or military network on Facebook.com.
Facebook was founded by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and two fellow students with an eye toward creating casual but semi-exclusive networks of friends -- and friends of friends.
"You don't need to share what's going on with everyone," Zuckerberg said in an interview last week. "You just need to know what your friends and immediate acquaintances are doing."
The company is taking a cautious approach to wider membership after it sparked a rebellion last week among existing users when it introduced changes that critics said exposed too much personal data to the prying eyes of their friends.
More than 700,000 of the site's 9.5 million users entered their name on a petition calling for the company to withdraw a feature called "News Feed" that instantly notifies members when friends update their own sites. The company later compromised by adding new privacy features and the protests subsided.
Facebook, a reference to the pictorial guides new students receive when entering a university, took off on college campuses in the wake of the rapid rise and subsequent decline of Friendster, the pioneering social network in 2004.
It subsequently spread to high schools and to a limited set of workplaces Facebook has authorized. A key draw was how it locked out more abusive aspects of the wide open Web by promoting socializing among one's immediate connections. At least three-fifths of users sign on once a day to Facebook.
He said that roughly a third of all Facebook users post their cellphone on their member profile pages for friends to see. "You definitely don't want to share your mobile phone number with 9 million people, just those you want to talk to."
By contrast, rival MySpace, the dominant social networking site, has grown faster by remaining open to all ages. This has lead to criticism that lax security has left teenage kids, who form the backbone of its users, vulnerable to adult predators.
Zuckerberg said Facebook should be thought of as a utility for people to share information with friends rather than the entertainment destination as MySpace has become, especially since it was acquired by media giant News Corp. (NWS.N: Quote, Profile, Research).
While destination sites seek to lure users to stay on the site as long as possible, "I would be pretty happy if people spent less time on the site," he said. As it is, users average between 16 minutes to 18 minutes a day, according to comScore.
"Facebook's focus is to help people to understand their world better," Zuckerberg said.
Justin Bailey said:YeahThe day I start getting webcam girl spam and friend requests from shitty stand up comedians on facebook will be a sad day indeed.
I want to clear up some rumors and ask for your feedback.
Right now a lot of people want their friends to use Facebook, but they can't get on.** Soon, we're planning on letting these people register for regional networks.
I know a lot of you are worried about this and how it changes the site. Honestly, it shouldn't change much for you. College networks will remain exclusive to people from those colleges. High school and work networks will remain exclusive as well. Only your friends and other people in your networks can see your profile. This is what makes Facebook different, and we're not changing it.
From reading a lot of your messages, it seems like some of you want more separation. Do you want to be completely invisible to people who aren't in a college or high school? Do you want to make sure they can't message or poke you? We like hearing from you. Please send us your thoughts on how we can make this work for you.
And just to clear some other things up: we're not putting up more banner ads, we're not charging anyone, we're not letting people put random HTML in their profiles, and we're not selling your information. Facebook is about increasing information flow and connecting people, not these things.
Please send us your thoughts here.

i miss the old facebook. it was so fun editing other people's wall comments.
sangreal said:eh, I'm not in College anymore and I use facebook still. Most of my friends on Facebook are college graduates too. Facebook isnt THAT closed to begin with
White Man said:Really. I was able to register via my affiliation with MS. I bet anyone in a suitably large company could do the same.
Note: You can only change regional networks twice every 60 days. You last changed your regional network on September 14, 2006, so if you change your regional network now, you won't be able to change it again until November 14, 2006.
Incognito said::lol @ people in this thread upset with Facebook because their creators want to diversify THEIR business. Facebook isn't some "college secret club," that only the kewl kids use. Everyone and their mothers know about it and I'd imagine the amount of emails streaming into the creators email accounts asking for an open admittance policy outnumber those bitching and clamoring for the "glory days" by a factor of 10. If you're concerned about privacy, then simply change your privacy settings. Don't get all righteous on Facebook because they recognize the opportunity that lies in front of them.

This is just like the news feed. People hate it, learn to understand it's actually pretty neat if you control the options to your personal liking, and then move on. Jebus.
