sorry bro but Nii-nii and that apathetic swimming girl are the best.
I don't even remember who those two are.

You say swimming girl and I think of the one from TWGOK.

Responding to a bunch of stuff from the last thread that I meant to reply to but never got around to. Some of this stuff was written but unposted, actually... I thought it'd make more sense to post it than just abandon the whole thing. I would have done this sooner if I'd remembered that I'd actually written some of these replies already. Bah. :)

Ben-To Zero: Road to Witch

This is a very short, 5 chapters manga which serves as a prequel of sorts to Ben-To. It occurs a year before the beginning of Ben-To and starts when freshman Yarizui Sen arrives at her new high school. She naturally goes to the nearest supermarket at night to find something to eat and runs into Kaneshiro "The Wizard" Yuu. There she gets into the usual crazy shit (and even
gets herself kidnapped by a wolf who nurses a grudge against The Wizard
) and eventually she discovers what high-school club she wants to join: the "Half-Priced Food Lovers Club".

The Wizard, who barely appears in Ben-To proper as he's retired by the time that story begins, is a main character in it as well as a female character who is also retired by Ben-To. There's a lot of hilarious exposition about being a Wolf and the "Stomach's Howl" and the "Taste of Victory" which The Wizard explains in hilariously serious fashion to a wide-eyed Yarizui. It's more like when Ben-To is good and about fighting over half-priced lunch boxes and less about whatever Ben-To is about in the last couple of episodes.

I should read the light novels or something. Sigh.
I agree, what was there was pretty good... but then it ended, basically at the beginning. Bah. It should have continued, it ended far too soon!

It was much to short, the writer should have continued it :(

I agree.

Wrath of the Ninja

See, the problem isn't that this OVA is bad. The problem is that it's bad in ways that aren't entertaining. Bad dubs and goofy plotlines lead to entertainment. Bad direction, editing, and tons of exposition, on the other hand... It really is amazing how bad the pacing and editing is in this. It's almost Garzey's Wing bad, and considerably more boring. It seems as if the director is entirely unaware of the concept of transitional scenes. It also doesn't help that every single pan in the series is way too fast. It actually hurts to watch after a while.

There are other problems too, like the animation being full of cheap tricks and not very pleasant to look at most of the time. And the soundtrack is everything bad about the 80s. And there's the continuous stream of exposition, all of the scenes of people sitting around and talking about things that are happening in other places instead of, you know, actually showing them. This story is ostensibly about a ninja girl seeking vengeance for her village that was destroyed by monsters, so why is all this weird historical exposition shoved in here? It has no relevance to her story at all, it's just there to set up the stupid ending plot twist
about all of Japan's civil wars being a Xanatos Roulette by space aliens who want to open a portal to hell.

There are a few humorously stupid scenes, such as this:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12082922/ninja wrath/death 2.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12082922/ninja wrath/death 3.jpg

Now, that might not seem so bad, but the thing is, they had literally only known each other for about two hours. They had one conversation together.

However, a few scenes like this aren't nearly enough. It's just not a fun show to watch at all. Really the only good thing about the entire OVA is the monster designs, which are legitimately good.

The problem isn't that it's bad? Really? No, I think a big part of the problem is indeed that it's bad... I guess the problem is that it's not good bad, or funny bad. It's just bad bad. It's no competition for Garzey's Wing, that's for sure... and "boring" is probably accurate, yeah. Garzey's Wing was awesome bad. This movie was just bad, and that's an important difference. I think I actually sold my copy of this, and I almost never do that. That says something.

And as for the story... yeah, it was awful, I entirely agree. It feels like part of a story or something, but it's not one I would care to watch any more of I think, not at its low level of quality.
And yeah, the space aliens causing ancient Japan's wars thing was pretty stupid.

Ive seen some of both series and liked it.

Anyway, this is the new list. Added in nana 7 of 7 since I liked that show and always wanted to buy it and of course K-ON because K-ON is just great. And more Squid Girl, because HNNNNNGH.

...

I'm pretty satisfied with this list.
I'm trying to remember all the late 80's early 90's shows I liked from my childhood and when I first got into anime.
I know it's been said, but definitely watch YUA. Very good series! It's too bad that that bundle only includes the second and third seasons -- it's absolutely worth it to watch the whole series -- but I guess that part would cost a lot more to get, so sure, watch these seasons first, then look up S1. S1 is 51 or 52 episodes, about as long as the other two seasons put together, too (and plus there's also a four episode OVA that goes before season 1). It's a fun series, whichever season you're watching, and is frequently entertaining. :)

I like Koihime Musou as well, but it's definitely a genre show -- that is, it's stupid, silly and it's got fanservice (though not as much as either the second or third seasons) and not much seriousness, but it's entertaining and fun if you like that kind of thing. I like it more than Ikkitousen (the other major "Romance of the Three Kingdoms characters as girls" show), myself. It's funnier and more entertaining. Also, Kannu is a pretty good lead, unlike the moron lead girl in that show, and there's no guy to be the harem master, which is great.

(K-On I think people know my opinion on, and I don't think I've seen the rest of those.)

I wish I could find Dominion Tank Police.
I have one (or maybe two?) VHS Dominion Tank Police volumes, it was entertaining and I wouldn't mind watching the rest... but yeah, there hasn't exactly been a recent re-release.

And yes, you should check out You're Under Arrest, like...NOW.
Yes.

Most shows from that era are sadly out of print.
You can get used copies of many things though, online, but prices vary of course, and so would the quality of the copies.

I enjoyed Ponyo as well. It had great visuals, of course, and the characters were charming and believable, even if the narrative went nowhere. But Howl's Moving Castle was a total mess with no redeeming value. It's amazing how quickly Miyazaki went south after Spirited Away.
No redeeming value? That's just not true... what's so bad about it? I know some people disliked it because it's based on a Western story instead of a Japanese one, and I did have some issues with the plot (
like, at the end, is the MC younger now, or not? I thought she got younger again, but on the other hand her hair is still grey... it was kind of confusing.
), but I remember thinking it was alright. I did only see it once though, dubbed in the theater after it came out. (The same is true for Ponyo, actually.)

When you stopped watching was just as harmless as when you were watching, the only time you should have stopped was when the OVA came when something actually happened.
I don't think so, I do think it's different when you've actually got a guy who clearly likes her, which there hadn't been for most of the series.

You are right about the OVA though, yeah. (I watched part of that, but not the whole thing.)
Sure the queen had an excuse for doing that, but that most certainly does not make it right. I will say though, her tragic past was pretty sad... poor older sisters... :(

WTF IS THIS?!!!

I'm away for a few hours and:

We have a Sailor Senshi off (Makoto, always and forever Makoto)
New Thread is started
Tampires is a thing

It's kinda upsetting to see that the last thread didn't burn out in a fiery wall of gifs

Agreed. It should have ended with the normal 100 posts of GIF spam :(

Wooooooooooow @ Im@s 21. This is huge, never ever in the history of the games!

Kotori was a former idol? And it was both Takagi and Kuroi producing her? super awesome. I really appreciate Imas TV nowadays as a supplement to the games and further developing the girls.

I admit though I've still been skipping around until recently, like around 16. Been watching it straight since though. It helps a ton that I finally started playing Imas2 again, (now on ps3) so it's gotten me in the mood.

Ben-To - 10

It's BACK!! \o/

Hunter x Hunter - 11

That was... creative censorship at least it wasn't as bad as I'd feared.

Gintama - 238

[insert superlative]

C³ 8-9

What a schizophrenic show, it goes all Yandere like on me and then it goes shitty typical fanservice-y the contrast doesn't work.

Mirai Nikki - 10

Overall a boring setup episode.

:([/spoiler]

Actually, I do have seasons 1 and 2 already. This bundle has 2 and 3 and it actually works out cheaper than if I just bought season 3. I got the first season as a full bundle set in one of Rightstufs bargain bin sales. All 13 DVDs worth.

This is what I don't get, the whole reason Notoya is in the demon realm is for Lotte to suck him off, hell she's showing signs of affection towards him throughout from early on and you decide the line is crossed when some other guy is into Lotte.

Not implying you have double standards, just a very skewed one.

Not knowing anything about what anime you're talking about makes this quote just that much better.
