Ahem. I think there's been a misunderstanding here. I wasn't saying that if I were a Campione in his universe that I'd have made out with my younger sister, not that I'm saying I wouldn't either in that ridiculous situation as I'd clearly save a family member's life if possible even if I had to do something gross like kissing them, but anyways, what I was saying is that if I were the pander baiting soft core porn author writing books for people that think there's not enough bad writing in Fifty Shades of Grey that I'd have made the main character kiss his sister by the fifth volume. Might as well just check that box you know?

I mean, I actually really, really dislike this show, more than the usual bad shows I watch. For one, while I am not morally against harems, polygamy and the like and theoretically even find the concept "hot," it's like a paradox because I'm not attracted to a woman who couldn't control me enough to keep me from other women, so, yeah. Harem scenario ends up being a no-go for me because the only type of women that'd exist in a harem can't interest me. Life's cruel like that.

But anyways, this show actually pisses me off because, and I'm going to take a cue from A Black Falcon here, because it's sexist. Not in the normal A Black Falcon way where the story happens to just focus on like 5 people that ends up better representing the male sex, no, that shit doesn't make me mad. A fictional world's a whole world and I don't get mad if I'm given a believable world and from that incredibly small snippet of the fictional world I'm exposed to it happens to look sexist. Doesn't bother me. In fact I'm willing to generally give the author the benefit of the doubt in that case. But, like, EVERYTHING in Campione is sexist and is sexist and exists just to serve the existence of this wacky harem. While one may argue that Godou deserves his harem through his deeds in the context of the show the fact is is that the universe in Campione is essentially designed to give men harems. Just to become a Campione requires a kiss from a woman first. These knights or witches, who are all young, are essentially whored out by older men in their societies to become mistresses of God slayers. Trained to treat what are essentially bratty teens with super powers as royalty. While it's not touched upon I wonder if it is even possible for a female to become a Campione, at the very least they unfortunately would have to get kissed by another female witch first so they don't even get the decency of getting some heterosexual wish fulfillment out of the deal but I guess if they swung that way they it works. You never see male Warlocks and you never see female Campiones. Even if there were female Campiones you'd have to wonder who their knights would be since these secret orders all seem to hire women. The entire aspect of having to kiss them to divine information is just to set up a ridiculous kissing scene and you never see the male dude working with the Shrine Maiden offering up his lips for victory. Essentially every facet of the world in Campione exists only to serve the formation of harems and while other harem shows also have tons of aspects I hate rarely is there a property that literally bangs the fact that everything in the world exists to perpetuate a harem as Campione does. The last show so insulting to me was Samurai Girls. I mean, I can't feel that Godou earns his harem because it feels like in that universe the heavens and earth exist just to give him a harem, and if not him just someone else so long as that person has a penis and that to me takes anything it could have ever had that made any character in the show special by any degree and stomps on it. I can't feel anything for the girls because in that universe they have to be haremites essentially and again, if not those specific girls there'd just be others. But hell, it's not just the mechanics of the world, all the combatants themselves essentially abide by the universal harem creation law by sitting around like a fool while their rival kisses some chick "just because."

I mean, when the pandering is so blatant in every single aspect of a work I have to question why the work exists in the first place, surely he could just write up straight porn with no scenarios right? Not like my imagination could actually entertain such a blatantly perverse set of world laws just to create the contrived scenario the author's feeding me.

Sigh.

Well, I feel better.

Wow. I'm not going to say that Campione isn't the slightest bit sexist or that you're off the mark about some things being contrived for the sake of harem shenanigans, but apparently things like how someone becomes a Campione seem to have been portrayed a lot differently in the anime than in the light novels...

I feel like I already know everything about what dinner with Oshii would feel like after watching Avalon. Definitely unappealing. :(

LOL, yeah Oshii seems not a fun guy. Dinner with obnoxious old man doesn't sound good at all.

Peek to Yuasa's workplace is more interesting dealbreaker.

NFL thread has put me in a Sanrio mood so felt like checking this out. As the name implies, it's an adaptation of Gulliver's Travels featuring Keroppi. Looks like it was just Lilliput but I suppose that's enough. It's pretty straightforward with a surprisingly competent English dub. I suppose this appeals to the audience with the niche interest of replacing literary characters with cute frogs.

So... stop watching it?
That's easy! It's done, right?

Seriously though it was my sleep aid, with my ADD I need something to create a strong enough stimuli in any direction so all of my brain can focus on it as opposed to running all over the place. hatred will do.

Looks cool. I watched some of Onegai My Melody and that was pretty neat, guess I'll get around to finishing that up some day.

So, I just caught up with Kokoro Connect.
I guess it's okay so far, the constant monologues and tirades are getting really stale at this point. The characters are interesting but you can't actually expect us to be interested in them saying approximately the same thing fifty times.
I wish it had continued more on the themes from episode 5.

At any rate, I'm still on vacation and I've plenty of time. Does anyone have any recommendations? Preferably something that already has a bunch of episodes so it can keep me busy for a while.

I found Tsuritama kinda boring and annoying and quit circa episode 5. I found Sword Art Online to be atrocious. Space Bros is pretty good.
If it helps with the recommendations, some anime that I've actually liked: Welcome to the NHK, Planetes, Hikaru No Go, One Piece, Haruhi, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Twin Spica.

Hajime no Ippo.

I dunno
doesnt it take away from the whole charm of him being overpowered by little people when theyre all frogs?

They will. The whole point of this reboot was to give Togashi a ton of lead time before they catch up. They will get there and it will be glorious. Imagine watching the whole arc, week to week, with no hiatuses. It will be amazing.

Yeah, It will probably be the biggest anime event of next year, although a lot of people aren't aware of it yet. Can't wait, especially when I think about all the sweet sakuga moments that are bound to happen during that arc.

I just, really, really hate the show.

That's definitely understandable. A lot of harem anime and a lot of harem light novels have that sort of objectification that you're complaining about, so I wouldn't say it's a problem with Campione specifically as much as it is a problem with a lot of series that otaku seem to be fine with buying. Campione is definitely set up in a way that allows for that pandering to occur.

Even if you're wrong about specific things like how someone becomes a Campione or the purpose of the knights, it doesn't really change how the general series is set up. Most of the plot elements exist to either make Godou a seemingly more awesome character or to allow for harem shenanigans between Godou and his haremites. Godou is even described as someone whose family is unconsciously good at attracting females, and he just happened to inherit that ability even though he doesn't want it. You could easily see it as a really big self-insert setting.

Well, I guess I'm being a bit hypocritical because I'm a fan of the series. I guess I'm among the people being pandered to :D. Is this what it feels like to self-insert? I don't necessarily feel like I am, but considering the type of anime I like, maybe I am doing it.

Holy shit mAc I missed you so much.
I don't miss you but that's because I've bugged your room and am always listening to you. I like the sound of you breathing.

I don't know that I've ever liked anything that I could insert myself into, most of the shows I do like I can't manage to imagine myself in their universe as a character. Maybe something's broken with me?

Well that's a load off.

You know, happiness really can be measured with cats. My orange cat is a total sadist dominatrix. Whenever she's near you she has to put a leg on you to show who's the boss.

its like the opposite of getting a leg up

Eh, seeing the amount of people who don't like those types of stories, probably not.

I can't really explain too much about self-inserting because I'm not even sure if I'm doing it or not, but if most of the self-insert shows are like Campione, it probably has more to do with the problems in the setting than self-inserting. I have low standards though, so it's easy for me to do things like imagine every character in Campione as caricatures instead of people and watch the plot unfold like that.

It's easier to say that something is wrong with me. There's nothing wrong with you. I don't mind admitting that I've been conditioned to like these sort of shows though. You guys will have to deal with my posting anyway, so I feel more sorry for you guys instead of myself. :D

Edit: Oh! I feel that it's important to mention that I'm speaking for myself, not for Campione fans! Man, I feel like I should change my avatar. I feel bad about making posts like these with Kuroneko as my avatar.

Lol, why feel sorry for us? If there's one thing I like it's different opinions because only then is my being right possible, if everyone felt the same then I couldn't feel that other people were weird! Seriously though, I don't hate or dislike a person because they like shows I dislike, or talk about them or anything silly like that. The only real disdain I have towards anyone would be a general feelings towards the industry as a whole when it seems that things that pander to me aren't being attempted at all. And I just mean attempted, they don't have to turn out good, although if something that interested me turned out bad that is a disappointment but at least the attempt was made.

But ultimately pander is a useless word because everything panders. Everything. The absence of pandering is pandering to a person who doesn't like pandering. So no need to worry about you being weirder than anyone else, people just like what they like and dislike what they dislike.
Thanks. I'll keep doing it then since you like it so much.
See, I don't ask for much.

The first radio show for Chuunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! just went live, and it included previews of the show's real OP and ED, which I have shared with you below:

OP: "Sparkling Daydream" by ZAQ
http://minus.com/lb2c1Qr36GKo5j

ED: "INSIDE IDENTITY" by Black Raison d'être (Maaya Uchida, Chinatsu Akasaki, Azumi Asakura, Sumire Uesaka)
http://minus.com/lg7L0fRveBcHn

The ending in particular sounds awesome. Can't wait to see the animation for it.

If you want to listen to the whole 45-minute radio show, for some reason, you can find it here on Nicovideo.

Does anyone feel sad that people write off great animes because of its visual style? I'm watching Steins;Gate and reminded of how great and fun it is. Yet I feel like people wouldn't watch it cuz it's.... you know... anime.
I think thats an alright reason, Ive seen psople write off anime for other odd reasons. I suggested Tsuritama to someone and they gave up on it quickly because they said they get seasick or something from it, which I thought was odd since the anime doesn't wholly take place on a boat.

Haibane Renmei 13 - END

Could it have possibly ended any other way?

iwM6KejUxPyqR.png

I love closeups like this. I don't even know if you could do a shot like this in live action animation and have it make sense. Animation can really exaggerate how eyes emote.

This episode had some of the tightest focus of any episode so far, and it absolutely delivered. I feel like I've already seen variations on the
cold-hearted 'rejection' by a character who doesn't truly mean it for one reason or another
scene before, but it was done very well here. Facial expressions and detailed animation give truth to the words. And then when
Reki faces damnation and nothingness
, the art steps up to the task of conveying the emotional intensity of that sequence. It built to exactly the sort of satisfying climax I wanted.

ijhDItJVoCpiQ.png

The angle of this shot is also great. It gives the room a very claustrophobic feeling that matches the emotional tone of that moment. Rather German Expressionist, in a way.

Haibane Renmei is a really great show for a lot of reasons. It builds a nice mythology with enough gaps to remain mysterious throughout, and that mythology infuses the setting with a lot of life. But the setting ultimately serves the story of Rakka and Reki, and it's great how it lets its characters organically develop. The show starts slow, but I think now that the unassuming beginning hides a lot of important moments in Rakka's growth that the show doesn't telegraph very much. Without my realizing it, she suddenly had a lot of definition, as did Reki. And by starting small and building slowly, it earned its moments of melodrama.

There's a lot I could talk about with the show. I think that one could easily discuss the way spirituality ties into the show's themes of loneliness, friendship, and forgiveness at length. I'm not going to bother with that, but I'll say I was very, very pleased with how it turned out.

It's definitely something I'd recommend.

Accel World 02
Ok, this series does have some hooks. I can see why someone would like it. The battles are frantic in a fun way and the animation looks pretty good. Avatar designs range from god awful, bucktooth robot dude, to pretty awesome, silver IronMan ripoff, but are pretty neat overall. Music is a bit boring and the protagonist is still insufferable, but it just bought itself at least one more episode from me.

I think this show fits in with the discussion of "hooks" going on earlier. I feel like it would have kept my interest if it had somehow showed me more of what it had in its first episode. Maybe they could have cut to a battle between two random other dudes? I don't know, all I know is it should have tipped its hand more first episode. Not doing so is a near fatal mistake in my book.

The music was a highlight, my most listened two ost this year up there with Horizons. I guess Iron Will, Bugz, and Silver Wing have yet to play.

Hunter X Hunter - 49

So good, the show just keeps improving, I really don't know how they managed to switch it up after that subpar beginning but I'm glad they did.
I hope they animate the chimera ant arc, that would make me completely forget the stupid crap they pulled in the first few arcs.

I wish they said who the two dudes were that the mafia were bringing in.

So I wasn't paying any attention at all throughout the last season but is this Sword Art Online or whatever it is actually legit good?

I honestly can't tell from fan reaction

Man, I really want to sit down and write an MMO-based story some day. Probably a singleplayer RPG or something.

It's legit solid if you're into juvenile fiction which panders hard on self-satisfaction. The leads are more or less flawless, there's a lot of escapism and feel-good self-insert Gary Stu-ism. The characters are always put in situations where they can show how capable, cool, and heroic they are. It has an interesting VRMMORPG setting, with great backgrounds, nice production values, and there's a lot of game mechanics talk in the script.

If you're looking for something deeper, more complex, and mature, it'll probably feel like a huge stinking pile of poop.

There's a dedicated thread for it in OT that you might find helpful/useful.

I think the overall feeling is that, while the characters aren't particularly compelling and fall victim to the usual anime flaws (or lack of them!), the world-building and general production values are pretty good. If you like MMORPGs you're more likely to like it than not.

Quoting myself since I just posted it in the OT:
It mostly comes down to whether you're willing to buy into it or not. It's not the type of show that can drag you kicking and screaming into enjoying it.

Oh, this is great. So in addition to previewing the Chuunibyo OP and ED during the radio show, the four lead heroines (Maaya Uchida, Chinatsu Akasaki, Azumi Asakura, Sumire Uesaka) revealed that they want to make their own live-action PV for the show's ending song. That would be interesting to see.

It's not good good but it's pretty fun, has some nice action animation (not often but it's cool when it happens, not as cool as in Accel World though, but it's still the main reason I'm watching it) and I think most people here are enjoying it, even if just to make fun of it.
