Fallon has good to great rapport with certain guests. It's amusing when he has those ppl on, otherwise it's just silliness that can be funny as hell at times. But it wore thin for us real quick. He sounds, fake, acts fake... just exaggerates everything and it's obvious. And he tries to play to everyone.

Colbert is a kind of Stewart successor. I know no one can replace Jon but Colbert is what we have and he's doing great along with Oliver, imo. Noah is sometimes awesome, sometimes mediocre.

At least that's how I see it. I don't watch every show every week. Used to watch a lot of Fallon. Now it's a few Colberts and Oliver. Noah if the guest appeals or I catch a replay of something great.

Basically we need Jon back. Not as a cartoon. As as president. There, I said it. Colbert as vice.

I remember one interview where Fallon seemed like he was just giving the guest shit. Like everything the guest tried to do, he would just give a slight response to.The guest was like, hey we should play a game. And finally the guest was like "Oh I know what this is, this is the Jimmy Fallon interview game" And Fallon was like "yeah , I guess." shrugging, like he did not give one single fuck. Then some music played and the interview was over. It was weird shit.

i was like, was that a interview that went bad and they just played it off, or what?

Am I the only one that absolutely hates his nostalgia skits? He does nothing original or funny with the concept. The whole skit relies on regurgitating old one-liners while fallon laughs in the corner. It comes off as very try hard and cringy (especially the saved by the Bell one)
Yes your the only one. (hate the only one riff)

I like them as seeing the cast in their original roles is interesting to me as its likely not going to happen in any other situations. The more the better

He isn't hated by everyone but honestly a lot of folks like conan here but he doesn't seem that funny to me. I even use to think I like him too.

I dislike Kimmel the most though. But I can't think of a houst I like.

I'm actually glad to see Jimmy not being standard hate on people though.

was that before or after he did his whole drinking rehab thing?

Wow wow wow, how can anyone dislike Kimmel? Kimmel/Damon saga is worth it

I rarely watch late shows but a while back me and my girl stayed up to watch an episode for some actress that was coming on. After watching Jimmys shitty monologue, Jimmy was at his desk where him and his announcer (Higgins?) just kept making weird baby noises at each other and laughing for about ten minutes, I'm just sitting there thing what the fuck.
His sidekick/announcer has got to be the fucking worst sidekick in late night history. They do this a lot from when I used to catch him on TV (don't bother anymore, before the Trump fiasco even)

I think it's a bridge he permanently burned.

That Trump interview was epitome of white privilege. He sat there, laughed and normalised all of Trump's horrible opinions. Pretty much everything he does now annoys me. I can't watch him anymore.

Yeah my feelings exactly. I used to defend him, and the Trump thing really opened my eyes in regards to Fallon.

I rather see Fallon continue doing what he's been doing. Why force him to do something he is not good at? A lot of crazy hate in the first few posts.

As far as Colbert, idk I preferred the character over the actual person, those first few episodes were kind of cringey and let's face it, he is no Dave and the job probably should have went to Jon Stewart instead. Which by the way wasn't he getting a HBO gig?

Fallon reminds me of what Bill Hicks used to say about Leno.

If you believe Jay's side, Bill wanted to do his infamous set that he did on Letterman which got cut originally on Leno's show. Leno said no and that it would get cut. Hicks apparently said that he'd go on Dave's show and Leno was right that it did get cut.

The difference between Leno and Fallon is that at one point, Leno can be funny and Fallon was never funny. I saw Leno in Atlantic City and I found him to be decent. His set was essentially a 90 minute monologue.

It's almost as if they share a soul.

The Tonight Show since Johnny Carson has slowly declined. I liked Jay Leno but he was nowhere as good as Johnny Carson and Jimmy Fallon is nowhere as good as Jay Leno. I will say I do like The Roots as a band.

Tonight Colbert rightfully takes down Maddow while Fallon has her on for an interview. Forced to change huh.

I caught both, Colbert's microwave bit was hilarious (again) and he's right to be criticizing Maddow for her methods, which claimed to have "THE RETURNS" when all she did was do Trump's bidding by releasing something wholly insufficient that casts doubt on his claims of not paying taxes, a thing he himself has admitted to.

Fallon's interview, on the other hand, was basically her being super high-energy talking about what led up to her releasing the tax returns, barely talking about the contents, while Jimmy offered nothing but stares and "oh that's so crazy!".

I loved the Maddow imitation Colbert did where he revealed the "why the chicken crossed the road" joke

Edit: dammit!

Honest question, as a non US: why do people hate him ? Genuinely thought he was popular.

He's never been funny but he's somehow found success. On SNL he was always the guy that looked into the camera and started laughing, those were his memorable bits. Nothing he did to make the audience laugh, he was just laughing with them. Both him and Seth only made it this far on NBC because they did Weekend Update on NBC's SNL.

Seth, I would argue, is a great political commentator, and I feel like he's eclipsed Trevor Noah in the Jon Stewart-space.

I was just pointing out both the Tonight Show and Late Show were always going to be filled by SNL alumni because of the NBC connection. Seth was good on Weekend Update I could see him having success in a Daily Show/Last Week Tonight role, honestly I'm not sure if I've ever watch his Late Show outside of a few web clips.

Do you guys actually watch late night TV shows when they air? I'll watch some clips on YouTube but late night TV seems almost a quaint notion these days.

I used to not. I just didn't watch and if someone asked my thoughts I'd just say "I don't find him particularly funny, he doesn't seem to have a very distinct voice on matters or in interviews and his skits are getting boring."

Live and let live, there's room for all.

Then he did the Trump thing which I thought was so low-bar for even the shittiest Late Night thing, and he did Trump repeatedly with him on the show and the impressions that were anything but "biting."

Yet even then I was like "Ok, now I really don't like him, wish Seth was doing it instead. Dude's a bit of a hack."

But now this and he wanting to suddenly be "political?" Nah, fuck that. That's why I've been more against him instead of just letting him be. That's like trying to have your cake and eat it too.

Is it really backlash from the Trump appearance? I just figured it was Colbert finding the right tone and then being his excellent self.

I mean, Fallon really just isn't my cup of tea but I don't hate him. He was hilarious when he teamed up with Colbert on the Report.

He kinda comes off as the Big Bang Theory of Talk Shows. Toothless, but palatable to the masses.

The public is thirsty for Trump bashing and Colbert is more than happy to serve it up.

Prior to Trump's election Colbert didn't have as much material to work with, basically.

I'm not US resident and I don't watch either Fallon or Colbert but does somebody know how my man Conan is doing in ratings?? I truly admire that guy, he is legit with his comedy and I would be sad if he somehow ends being lower than Fallon :(

He's been lower than Fallon since Fallon's debut. He's been nowhere close to Fallon ever I think.

A show on TBS in the early evening simply isn't going to compete with network TV shows after network news programs.

And I agree, it's a shame since Conan is so talented.

It jars me a bit that Fallon was number one before. To me he was always an exercise in cringe, and at best the TV equivalent of beach fluff.

Colbert is better, though I find the Late show doesn't land with me as well as Colbert Report.

Fallon doesn't seem like the type to truly bash anyone. Impressions, yeah, but true bashing from him seems unlikely.

I'm not to into the late night circuit or at least the traditional one. I follow everyone who came out of the daily show and followed Colbert into his more... traditional late night spot when he transitioned. So i'm not particularly familiar or probably ever will be familiar with the circuit. On that note, i didn't know jimmy fallon had that much vitriol. From what's being communicated in the thread, he's very plastic and unappealing. Interesting, I might find some clips to investigate.

He's on cable so he was doomed to distant 4th from the start.

Can't believe it took me until now to make the connection but Fallon's fakeness is pretty much exactly what I also hate about so many "Youtubers", especially React channels and others and their clickbaity videos and bogus enthusiasm. There's more to my dislike of Fallon but I've already gone over this.

I do like Fallon's and Conan's sidekicks better though. Steve Higgins and Andy Richter. Legit comedic talent to banter with.

I think Jon Batiste is an amazing musician, but he's a terrible sidekick for banter. Jon Batiste mic'd up with his interjections and random chord playing during Colbert's monologue is really, really bad.

It's not like the band leaders need to be the ones doing the banter. I don't think Colbert needs it at all, so forcing the mic'd up Batiste just feels weird. It's like he has one of those annoying hecklers ruining his standup by shouting random shit.

Nooo, not fair at all :(. He is IMO the best talk show host! I spend hours and hours watching his video segments on YouTube.

Damn so that's the reason. And with the intense decline of cable users nowadays this affects his show rating even more.

It annoys me when he starts interjecting randomly like that. They've had a few moments of good banter, but it should be prompted, not random "alright"s and "Oh!"s thrown in there, that often seem to visibly distract Colbert.
