Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

So I snatched up New Vegas from the D2D sale a couple days ago and since I wont be able to actually download the game until Monday due to bandwidth caps, I figured I should plan out what mods to use now. I'm thinking of going with these so far.

NVSE
FOMM

Nevada Skies
Radio New Vegas - The Secret Stash
Flashlight NVSE or ELECTRO-CITY
Immersive Hud
MTUI or Darnified UI
Project Nevada 2.0

New Vegas Bounties I
& II
Weapon Mods Extended
A World of Pain

I'm just worried about Project Nevada, Weapon Mods and World of Pain making the game too easy. I played a little of Fallout 3 and wanted to play it kinda turn based but VATS was completely overpowered. How is it in New Vegas? If it's too powerful, I was thinking of just playing just like an FPS with VATS if things get hectic.

New Vegas is a more balanced game than Fallout 3 but with A world of pain installed last time, You can pilfer dead guys in the first town's quest that will net you some equipment you really shouldn't be allowed access to at that point.

Last time I had it installed, I left Goodsprings for the first time with an anti-material rifle and a crapload of caps (thanks to the added shop down the road with a crapload of money to exchange for sold goods) and a great set of armor.

While I liked what it did with the lengthy added dungeons, I wouldn't recommend it for a first playthrough.

Quick question, how do you remove mods? I just started the game on PC a few days ago, and i just found out my brother installed a particular mod that i don't like at all.

How can i get rid of it?

These are counter-balanced by much more difficult enemies and battles. Even with awesome skills and weapons victory is not a sure thing.

Guess I'll go with World of Pain on the attempt on a pacifist playthrough. Thanks for the help.

Iirc World of Pain will be very difficult for a pacifist playthrough. Almost everything that it adds requires combat of some form.

I should have guessed considering the name. Oh well, guess I'll save that for when all the DLC is released.

have you tried unchecking the mod?

He downloaded the mod that gives all females characters large bouncy breasts, skimpy clothes, and full on nudity. It was ok at first, but it's getting creepy now. Especially when you see dead naked females on the road who look like they were sexually assaulted or something.

Okay.. after doing a little digging it seems there are two ways for mods like that to be installed. Either through a standard mod where you put it in the Data folder and then select it from the launcher. This is how mods usually come.

The other way is basically a manual installation. The problem is, without exactly which mod they used it might make things odd to uninstall.

Note: im pretty sure this wont harm your game but i make no guarantees. It shouldnt but dont bite my head off if it does lol

In the New Vegas directory there should be a Data folder. In Data theres probably a Textures and a Meshes folder (i say probably because i dont know which mod your brother installed). If you browse to Textures, there should be a sub-directory called Characters. If you are lucky there will be a folder called Female. Try cut/paste-ing that folder out and try the game out. If the game gives issues just put the folder back.

Do the same for the Meshes folder.

Hopefully thats all you need to do to remove it.

I tried that, but the the thing is, there's nothing checked at all on the list. This actually seems to be the only mod that's engaged.
If it's not on the list it's a simple replacer. You simply need to remove all the files associated with it. Download the mod again and read the readme. If there are no instructions, look at the files you just downloaded and delete the same ones from your fallout folder.

Not sure if you managed to sort this out, but if you're talking about New Vegas or the Steam version of FO3 then you can just go into the Steam library, right-click the game and choose "Backup Game Content". Once it's backed up, choose "Delete Local Content". Then navigate to the "common" folder inside /steamapps/ in your Steam directory and fully delete the game directory.

Then whenever you restore from the backup you will get the virgin game, unsullied by bouncy-breasted bandits. This works even if you take the backup after the mod is installed because Gamebryo mods all basically work as overrides without modifying the game itself, and Steam keeps a manifest of the files needed for the backup.

That's why if you download (this is to everyone btw) a "better bodies" mod, get the one that gives them all underwear.

Otherwise it's pretty creepy to have a bunch of nude bodies lying around after looting them.

You guys call it weird, I call it realistic.

This isn't really how it works. The "second way" as you call it, isn't more "manual" than the first, it's actually not different at all. The only difference is whether there is an esp file in the mod or not. The esp file is what shows up in the launcher with the box that you tick, and it's needed for all mods except very simple texture/mesh/menu etc replacer mods. The esp file contains all the scripts and data that make the mod actually do something. Whether a mod has an esp file or not, it can still have tons of files you have to install into your Data folder.

This worked for me after my friend installed a nude mod.

Read the comments on that file if you have permissions problems.

i know thats not how it usually works. ive had no experience with Beware of Girl Type 3 Body Replacer or any of those kind of body modes but there are manual install files listed on the page that do not have an esp or esm. Instead you get a zip file with Textures and Meshes folders with the instructions to add to the Data directory.

So, I'm sitting in a burger joint in Hawaii. I read this, snorted Aloha Spirit and nearly choked to death in front of a prostitute. Thanks for nearly killing me in the most humiliating way possible

The "manual" in the description there doesn't have anything to do with whether or not it has an esp. It actually refers to the fact that the topmost download has to be used with the program "Fallout Mod Manager" which enables install scripts where you simply double-click the "fomod" file for the mod, get pop-ups asking you which body type you prefer, breast size etc, and then the program automatically installs the correct files (which may or may not include an esp) in the correct folders. In the manual versions, you download your preferred body type and put them in the folders yourself. Using Fallout Mod Manager also makes uninstallation very simple (double-click the fomod again), but I assumed ezekial45's brother wasn't using it so I didn't ask.

Just delete the Textures and Meshes folders completely and it should be gone, at least that worked when i tested last night.

Maybe, but i feel like it there are boundaries that should be respected. This one just oversteps it.

Anyway, i think i found the mods in question a folder that's labeled overwrites.

- Beware of Girl
- Shiloh Desert Succubus
- BNB_Armor BND_body
- Lingerie

Should i just delete them? Or is there another way of going about it.

Also, whats the World of Pain mod like? It's downloaded, but i didn't notice anything different. So i'm not sure if it's enabled.

Does anyone know any NV mods that allow you to start a new game as a different character type? There was a mod for F3 that allowed you to start as a raider, ghoul and a few others, and I was wondering if there is anything like this for NV? I don't want to do the Goodsprings intro again :(

Hey man, no offence or anything, but several people have exhausted large amounts of their time answering this question for you and you seem to have not even bothered to read our posts. The answer you seek is on this very page.

Just found this: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=39526

Haven't tried it though, if you get around to giving it a shot then post some impressions!

Oh no i did, really. But i'm also sure if these are the right ones that i want to get rid of.

I apologize if i offended you, or anyone else.

No need to apologise! I was just pointing out that there's a lot of info already here for ya. To answer your question though, the mod names look right but the "overwrites" folder comment threw me. Are you using the Steam version?

Unless the mod is using an esp file there should not be any working files in a folder called "overwrites", they simply won't do anything without an esp. And since you said there is no esp, I'm a little bit confused.

Yeah, i'm using the steam version. I'm wondering if he's done some tampering with the folders and file names. Since you're not familiar with the "overwrites", would it be safe to assume that it's something my brother created?

The overwrites folder itself contains sub folders for meshes, sound, voice, character, lingerie (night ware), shiloh.

I don't see anything with an esp file. It all has the .fomod file type.

Which folders are you in? Where is the overwrites folder and where are the fomods? Any esp files would be in steamapps/common/fallout new vegas/data

That sounds like an unpacked ESP to me. Why he unpacked it I can't say...

Ezy, just backup the game using Steam backup then fully delete the game folder and restore it from backup. Should take you about 30 minutes tops.

Oh, i see it now. I'm sorry, i've never downloaded mods for FO before. The overwrites folder and the .fomod file are within the main Fallout New Vegas folder (steamapps/common/fallout new vegas). It looks all sloppy to be honest.

The esp. files are in the data folder. Are those .fomods the main ones that the esp files are extracted from?

I think you mean an unpacked FOMOD? Anyway, I agree, just re-install at this point.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. He's probably going to hate me for getting rid of this stuff, but he also forgot that i want to play this game too. I have no idea what he saw in this mod. UGh.

Thanks for the help all. I'm looking forward to starting fresh with all the mods.

God damn, the World of Pain mod is fantastic. I've played through the game twice on the 360, and i was starting to get bored with my PC playthrough, but this mod is just exquisite. It feels like a new game.

However, the only thing i don't like is how fast i'm leveling. After going through about 4 new places, i leveled up within the span of an hour.

The only mods i have installed are WOP and Weapon modification mods. I have the Project Nevada mod downloaded, but i want to wait a bit before i try it.

That looks awful, since the modder for URWL got banned download this instead

How does it look like shit? I've been playing at 2560x1440 and haven't noticed anything that bad about the graphics (considering it's gamebryo)

Gamebryo actually has pretty great IQ at maxed settings so I really don't know wtf that dude is on about. And Imaginator is basically for bullshots and nothing else, stick with Nevada Skies.

Definitely put Project Nevada in if you're enjoying AWOP. The combat is substantially better if you have a sprint key and a throw grenade key. Combine PN with a crosshair mod and the combat is almost up to par with the average FPS.

All the mods I've used so far have been ESPs. I just use the "Data Files" thing that already comes with NV by default to apply and unapply mods prior to each boot up, which is more or less the same thing as FO3's FOMM, just less features.

I don't like to do mods that completely change the character models or game balance though.

Actually, I stumbled upon an amazing mod that's supposed to be for weather, but the actual effect makes everything misty and smoky, smoothing away all the ugly seams and pixels. Combined with the luminator the effect is pretty impressive. The only problem is the current version requires the fallout3.esm, probably because the modder was playing with the Requiem mod. Next version shouldn't have that. Name is something like F3NV weather.

Or try other weather mods. They seem the best place to get some atmosphere.

This only works with mods which don't use FOSE/NVSE to run.

There is a mod on the New Vegas Nexus called Visual Concoction Cookbook
basically its just abunch of screenshots and settings that give some really cool effects.

Using the settings and mods for the "Freaking Blue Sky!" option(minus the Trek vasline cam) this is how the starting town looks. I really like it

Kind of. With Nevada Skies you can actually use the in-game control panel to switch between a whole range of different atmospheric conditions, some of which are just for show but the others might look better to you.
