Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

Jumped back into Fallout 3 over the weekend and installed a ton of mods. At some point I broke it in a way that every time I tried to enter a subway tunnel, the game would crash. Disabled every mod, same issue, so clearly something got changed/replaced that wasn't reverting, so ended up deleting the game in Steam and downloading it again. Immediately made a backup to another drive of the clean game directory in case I do it again, lol.

The game continues to impress me with just how good it looks with a few key mods installed tho. Can't wait to jump in and play more this weekend.

New Vegas Bounties III is (finally) getting released tomorrow. Looks like one more venture into the Mojave before going to Boston.

Oh wow, that's great to hear. The last two were excellent, the guy who made this is really talented. I'm hoping he'll return with some new stuff for F4.

Just got back into Fallout 3 and I plan to start heavily modding it for the first time. Blackout looks like what I want to use (I'm trying to uninstall Realism ENB first). Are people right when they say it works just fine for Fallout 3 even though it's made for New Vegas?

Edit: I'm also pretty discouraged from using texture packs because they tend to be unfaithful to a game's original art assets. Even NMC looks noticeably different in my opinion.

So i started to mod fallout new Vegas everything was fine I installed enchanted shader enb and it want OK for 2/3 days than yesterday I changed monitor and the enb isn't going also every time I due something like using the pip boy or a scope the visual get very muddy WTF happened?

I don't know how all you guys are playing Fallout 3 heavily modded without it crashing every 5 minutes.

I've gotten Fallout 3 to a point where it's more stable than New Vegas for me, in Windows 10 no less. By doing the fallout.ini CPU thread changes and installing the stability mods, plus running it off of an SSD drive, it's been great, I play for 3-4 hours without any crashing, and then it loads back up super quick.

Hey, has anyone managed to get Fallout 3 to work on Windows 10?

I actually have 8.1, and it is broken on there as well. It crashes immediately with startup. I have tried pretty much everything.

I used Readius Pipboy for a couple of days and liked it, except for one issue which causes the flashlight to turn off each time you use the pipboy and decided to uninstall it, and now when I load my save it says "This save relies on content that is no longer present."

The file loads perfectly fine, but when I try to bring up the pipboy it shows my arm with nothing on it. Is there any way to solve this issue?

I've been trying to play Fallout 3 on Windows 10; it works but the frame rate is pretty bad, it goes from 60 to 40ish fps when there's a bit of action, and especially in the DLC's. And even when it's running at 60 fps it feels sluggish. I tried playing with no AA and dialing down other options but it doesn't seem to do anything. And that's with a 980Ti. Not sure what to do.

So I wanted to continue my game of NV.
Started Nexus Mod Manager. It said it needed to update so I clicked OK.

After Update it says it needs to uninstall and reinstall all mods for it to work, and I am like "WTF!!!". Seeing I have no fucking choice, I allow this.

Halfway into the process NMM crashes, and now I cant play NV.

Is there any quick fix for this or do I have to restart every fucking thing and maybe play this in two days after spending several fucking hours on fixing the mods. By then I could be playing Fallout 4.

Fuck NMM!!

What alternative mod managers are available, easy to use and up to date?

Fallout Mod Manager is what i used for F3, but i guess it'll work for FNV as well.

I'm skipping out on Fallout 4 for now due to my general aversion to Bethesda's direction with the franchise. But all this Fallout talk has compeled me to reinstall Obsidian's New Vegas and give it another shot. Never played it for more than 4 hours since the fundamental Bethesda gameplay never clicked for me, but I'll see if I can look past it to actually get to the good stuff Obsidian offers. I would also like to gauge the possibility of creating an audio overhaul mod like I did for Skyrim and Oblivion.

Now I'm just wondering if there is some mod out there which disables the annoying as shit DLC notification spam at the start of the game, as well as getting rid of all the free stuff handed to you (which I assume comes from some DLC)?

next time, just verify the game cache. It should find which file is broken and redownload it for you.

Having never played NV until recently I can't say if this mod does all you're asking for but I wasn't bombarded with DLC prompts so I think it helps. I still had some equipment in my inventory that I assume is related to DLC so I just offloaded everything that was suspect in the first area.

The Delay DLC mod is what you're looking for, just don't download the TTW-version unless you use the Tales of Two Wastelands mode (the one that combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas). And yeah, those free items come with the Courier's Stash, Caravan Pack, Tribal Pack and Classic Pack DLC's. If you don't want them, you can just disable those or you can download the mods that try to integrate them into the world more (JSawyer Mod does this for instance).

In that case just download the Delay DLC mod and JSawyer's mod. Or if you don't want to make your game much harder (per JSawyer), you can just throw the freebies in a storage somwhere and forget about them. Or you can use the freebies to enhance the roleplay experience. In my last (unfortuantely cut short) New Vegas playthrough I roleplayed that the Courier is from New Arroyo, so I threw all the starting free gear away except for the Vault 13 stuff because realistically someone from New Arroyo would probably wear stuff from or based on Vault 13.

Speaking of which, any mod which makes it more like the old games is welcome in my book so I'm up for more recommendations there. The very first thing I downloaded was a mod to replace all the Inon Zur music, lol.

since some people might be feeling like replaying new vegas now that fo4 is released, gonna quote my cool mods list again:

i'm kind of tired of people asking me which mods to install so i'm making my list of essential mods!

it's not super comprehensive or anything, but it should be a good compilation of lore-friendly and balanced mods that i consider to be either must-haves or almost must-haves. also none of those huge texture mods or enb because i don't like em. and obviously no naked/gross shit. also might be a bit outdated since i haven't played new vegas in a year and been only casually browsing the nexus, but i'm guessing it should make a good start

ui: basically only mtui, the only ui mod you'll ever need
mtui: best ui mod, unintrusive and does exactly what you need, which is making the font smaller so there can be more shit on screen. most important mod you'll install
oHud: does nice things like hide the hud when you're outside of combat and other useful crap. works with mtui too

gameplay: rebalances the game or adds new features. new vegas is pretty feature complete so mostly rebalances
project nevada: second most important mod, rebalances the game to make it a lot more enjoyable on hardcore difficulty, adds a shit ton of lore-friendly weapons, lets you sprint and bullettime and other crazy shit and more. i generally just install rebalance+weapons since the cyberware stuff is super overpowered
jesawyer's: alternatively you can install josh sawyer's mod, which does a few of the same things but it's a lot more low key.
weaker boone: nerfs boone so he doesn't one shot everyone before they even show up in your screen
mission mojave: huge bugfix compilation

weather: better looking lighting and stuff
nevada skies: the best weather mod, comes in many variants, vanilla being my favorite as i find the rest of them to be overly saturated or just plain ugly to look at. it adds a bunch of cool weather stuff like sandstorms, rain and snow, it's the best.

faces: less goofy-looking npcs
new vegas redesigned 3: a really good faces mod that doesn't just pretty up npcs but actually try to match their voices with their face, age, etc. changes some of the recruitable npcs like cass and veronica which is a shame but i'm pretty sure you can just delete them and use the defaults. requires FCO to work

restoration stuff: i love this kind of stuff, restored cut content
new vegas restoration: massively improves new vegas by merging both areas, adding new casinos, cleaning everything up, etc. makes new vegas better match what you've been told it would be like
freeside restoration: same for freeside
npc project series: i really like these, they restore a bunch of cut content to different areas of the game, making places like the 188 trading post look a lot more alive. there's a bunch of em: 1 2 3 4. afaik the freeside mod should work with freeside restoration but if not just ignore this one.
new vegas uncut series: really cool series that restores bits of cut content, including some cut quests and voiced characters. again a lot of them: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
populated casinos: adds people to the vegas casinos which makes them feel more alive. fairly straightforward, but makes a pretty big difference. i think there are some compatibility issues with this one, so you gotta install compatibility mods for it to run properly

textures: texture mods, i don't include nmc and such cos i don't like em, but ojo bueno and nmc are popular and well regarded
weapons retexture project: pretty cool mod that redoes the textures for like a billion guns. it's one of the few i like because you're gonna be looking at those guns up close all game so it makes a big difference that they look a hell of a lot nicer.

others: random crap
electro-city: adds tons of streetlights and such to the wasteland which go really well in the really dark nights of nevada skies. also looks cool as hell
more grass: i like this one over the super complicated flora mods because of how simple and effective and performance light it is
eve: adds a ton of cool "shooting stuff" special effects.
weapon animation replacer: less goofy animations for some of the weapon stances

stutter remover: helps with some stuttering issues you will most assuredly run into

guilty pleasures:
waster's scarf: a scarf. it looks cool. that's it
holster: a holster for your pistol. vanity stuff
tailor maid: my favorite barbies-playing mod. just mix and match different armor to find a combination u like. all lore-friendly stuff and it comes with a non-stupidly-overpowered version, so it's really cool
project mikoto: tons of hairstyles, mostly for females

that's about it, i don't use too many mods as i try to mostly play the game as intended

lemme know if i missed anything!

So uh, I have Fallout New Vegas(Base game+ All DLC and GRA) modded up with the following:

Weapons of The New Millenia(+GRA Patches)
Nevada Skies
Yuchikigai's Patch
Weapons mods Expanded
New Vegas Anti Crash
4GB Limit remover
oHuD
NMCs Texture Pack
Weapon Retexture Project+GRA patch
MTUI

And holy fucking shit the game is so fucking amazingly good now, not that it wasn't before but the enhancements for my millionth playthrough of the game make it feel like an even better 3D sequel to Fallout 2. I added on the weapon packs to bring back the weapon variety of FO2. I liked the weapon mod aspect but I always felt it could be more.

I tinkered around with project nevada and the only thing I liked from it was the grenade hotkey and of course the cool mask/helmet overlays.

Need some help here.

Been using Mod Organizer for the first time after getting a rec here in a different thread. Also using that mega-step guide to install everything. It all went perfectly until the very end when something go hosed and the game crashes constantly. I suspect it has something to do with the part with creating Bash Tags or the Wyre Flash.

Here's where it gets confusing for me- Even if I disable every single mod, the game will crash on startup through Mod Organizer (starts fine vanilla from Steam).

If I create a new profile in Mod Organizer then the game starts fine. But in an existing profile with no mods- crash.

So I start installing mods again in the new profile. I check after installing every couple of mods and the game boots and plays fine. Until I install a batch of mods and now crash. So I disable the mods I just activated and it still crashes.

That's what's confounding me. It's like enabling a certain mod (haven't narrowed it down yet) causes the crash and then there is no recovering from it within that profile. How is that possible?

Thought I would revive this thread with some discussion on some newer mods released for New Vegas (released in 2015 - the last few weeks) I have found to be fantastic.

Behaviours (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/61925/) - Mod author Fallout2AM who is best known for heaps of animation mods released this mid-year and it's so awesome. Basically adds idle animations for your character, while they are walking or standing still. Fully customisable in MCM and you can choose which idles play (swatting, hands on hips, smoking, crying, staring off into the distance, sitting, etc). There's also an experimental head-tracker included (your character will stare at nearby NPCs). Severely under-downloaded.

Iguazu Shopping Center - A Mall in The Strip (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62317/) - Mod author Jokerine has a ton of similar mods adding life to the Mojave with new businesses, and this is his latest. Adds a really cool shopping centre to the North Strip, tons of detail, new NPCs, textures, voice-acting and all-around effort put in.

Lively Gourmand And Street Vendor Stall (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62336/?) - Mod author BlooperReel added a cool street vendor stall in the main part of the Strip, and made the Gourmand within the Ultra-Luxe Casino more lively and feel more like a restaurant.

Mojave Outpost Redesigned (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/59623) - Another mod by BlooperReel, I only found this recently and it's severely under-downloaded. He spruced up the Mojave Outpost with tons of new NPCs, decorations, merchants, bugfixes and gave all of the inhabitants custom animations so it feels more alive. There's now assistants for the NCR stationed there on the type writers, merchants outside eating or walking around, some new NPCs with voice-acting, and so on.

Real Recoil (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62153) - Adds a proper recoi system to New Vegas, and mod author Deus Gladiorum has gone the extra mile with consistent compatibility updates.

Saints and Sinners - Karma Consequences (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62186/) - Mod author PushTheWinButton made a mod which awards karma perks for neutral, good, evil, very good and very evil. You get benefits, but also hit squads come after you depending on your karma, similar to Fallout 3.

Simple Reputation and Disguises (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62183) - Makes much needed tweaks to the faction disguise system, and can be safely disabled or enabled mid-game without any issues if you don't like it. Another really well implemented mod from author PushTheWinButton.

The New Vegas Reborn Project (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/59631/) - A rebalancing mod which has since been replaced with another mod, JSawyer Ultimate, made by the same mod author, PushTheWinButton. I recommend it for one of its modules, "Mojave Encounters", which adds dynamic random encounters into the game.

Less Lame Tops Pool (http://www.loverslab.com/files/file/616-kendo-2‘s-less-lame-tops-pool/) - Might be a bit more risque for some people's tastes, but I think it adds some life to the courtyard within the Tops Casino. And it actually isn't as pervy as the download page makes it seem.

I can't get this mod to work right for the life of me. I think I'm missing a page of MCM settings (there is one section but it doesn't cover things like the proportional run). I HATE the proportional run. I tried Beta 2.5 because the mod author said he implemented a hotkey to disable the run and it added leaning if you use a specific skeleton but those didn't work for me either.

Going to have to check out the rest of what you linked. I really love mods that flesh out and add life to the Mojave.

My contribution to the thread: Weapon Ammo and Condition Checking. Animation mod from Hitman (the same guy who did the great weapon animation replacers everyone should be using. Really immersive mod to check the current bullet count of your weapon or the weapon status. Really cool to use in place of the normal HUD element. My only problem with it is that I have a misaligned animation on a couple of weapons where the clip floats in space several inches to the right of the hand. Don't know how to fix it.

I've had problems with it as well. I think it clashes sometimes with certain ESPs, so what I did was place it second last on my plugins list (Realistic Wasteland Lighting NEEDS to be last) and I also made sure it was last in the left pane of Mod Organizer. Since then, it's been working fine.

I don't use proportional run or head-tracking (you need a certain skeleton mod for the latter) - just the general idles, hardcore idles and walking idles. Really adds a lot of immersion to see my character look around and smoke.

And yes please check them out, these mod authors definitely deserve more downloads and endorsements!) for their hard work.

Cheers for the link! I'm not familiar with this particular mod from Hitman (I love his work on the First Person Animation Overhaul and his Reloading Animations).

Does he have more mods not available on Nexus? I've recently been scouring ModBB, LoversLab and a few other spots to find mods not hosted in the usual places.

Edit: After looking at this YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNOY2duwaK4) I now recall seeing this in beta a while ago. Love the work he did.

Had lots of fun with Fallout 4 but something about just not giving a shit about any of the story put me off wanting to play anymore. Looking forward to one of those total conversion mods that just guts the entire thing and turns it into a pure survival game.

Anyhow, I dusted off New Vegas since I was itching to play it. I'm having a really hard time with it though. I have never had issues with the game like this. Right off that bat the environmental texture mods were giving me problems. Black textures that crashed the game pretty frequently. I removed those and it's a lot more stable. But I'm still having random crashing. For the most part it's just a freezing crash. Sometimes I get a "Crash auto save" but a lot of the time I don't. Another I've experienced is the out of memory error.

I don't think there are any conflicts there- I use pretty much all that you have listed without issue.

Sort your load order with LOOT if you haven't already.

Are you using New Vegas Anti-Crash and the 4GB extender? If not then I suspect that using them may solve your issue and make it more stable.

Yes. I'm using both. The 4GB loader uses the NVSE as long as it's in the same directory correct?

One thing I notice is with the few texture mods I do have installed is that on occasion I will see black texture before I crash. I know that this kind of thing is caused by "archive invalidation" not being enable but I do have it enabled via NMM. Is there some kind of bug with it? Trying to research it with google is not very fruitful.

4GB loader can be kind of finicky. You can verify that NVSE is loaded by going to the console and typing "getnvseversion".

Can't help much with the rest because I use Mod Organizer instead of NMM. I find it far superior in general but it's particularly great for troubleshooting. Since it never actually overwrites anything it's incredibly easy to toggle mods on or off until you find what's creating the problem.

I did have some texture issues but they seemed to happen because I was near the max number of plugins (135 or therebouts). Going back down into the low 120s solved it. But it seems like you don't have anywhere near that number of plugins installed.

It's possible you may have a mod conflict that can be fixed by creating a Merged Patch or Bashed Patch. They are pretty easy to make once you know what you are doing but it's a little bit of learning curve the first time or two.

I did a clean install of New Vegas and I'm using MO this time.

Seems like a pretty great tool. It alerted me to some conflicts NMM just let me run with which might have possibly been the source of my issues. Right now I'm running the same mods + environmental texture mods and haven't had any crashing or black textures. I used the console cheat to zip all around the map, entering all kinds of places and no issues thus far. Very promising.

I used to think MO only offered profiles over NMM, but it's actually so much better that I can't ever use NMM again for Bethesda games. Faster, better for stability and more powerful.

Seems really stable now. Thanks for mentioning Mod Organizer Crichton.

One thing that is a bit confusing is the whole business of the overwrite folder. I didn't notice I had anything in there until I finished installing my last mod so I'm not sure which mod created the extra files. The problem description was a bit hard to follow... should I have just left it alone? I ended up creating an "overwrite" mod since the message kind of bothered me.

Would anybody know of some good, lore-friendly mods for the games?

I plan on playing the series for the first time, and I don't think vanilla is my cup of tea. I quite like the idea of Fallout 4's Survival Mode, which was New Vegas' Hardcore mode, and a feature in the Wanderers Edition mod for Fallout 3, so I have an idea on what I want to get for 3 and NV (Wanderers and Project Nevada) but after that I'm a bit lost.

Getting close to Fallout 4's survival mode was my exact goal with this playthrough New Vegas.

You only really need Project Nevada and hardcore mode enabled for that. PN will allow you to tweak up combat to make it more action game like. Check out my mod list a few comments up. Everything else is pretty much just fluff but it's a good place to get started (Impact, improved sound effect and real recoil mods really make the combat feel much better)

Yeah, it can be confusing. Any files that for whatever reason aren't attached to a specific mod end up in there. Sometimes it's intentional like the process for creating creating a merged patch- once it's created the files end up in Overwrite and then you can right click on Overwrite and turn the files into a proper mod.

But most of the time it's usually just an error with an installed mod and the files can be safely deleted. I know that a couple of my interface mods end up dumping files into Overwrite for some reason. The mods work correctly otherwise so I just delete them periodically.
