Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

You're a good friend. Really appreciate this.

Are there any guides you can recommend for things like merging/bash patching? I've tried modding Bethesda games quite a few times over the years, but it never works as it should. Probably some important steps im missing.

i'd recommend to keep your mod count at a minimum if you want to avoid your game blowing up

most mods aren't really necessary

i would stay awayfrom wyre bash and all that junk and just try to enjoy the most out of new vegas. it's a really competent game by itself anyways

Oh, I've played NV like a bajillion times. I've tried my hand at modding a bunch of Bethesda games before, but I've never done it right. I've just found a handful of mods I liked and shoehorned them into my games.

oh well in that case i'd suggest you just use nmm and stay away from complicated stuff

i really don't see a point in getting mixed up with wyre bash

I spent like 2 hours just walking around and talking to people in Novac. Awesome little town (good music too). I really enjoyed the characters in Novac — No-bark is hilarious and awesome. I talked to that nice old rancher couple whose brahmin kept getting killed, and I decided to sneak around their house at night to see if I could catch the culprit. When I saw what it was I was like oh shit it's a predator! I was right behind it when it came out of stealth so I immediately lit his ass up with my Homemade SMG "Borz" (SMG from WotNM mod). After that I did the quest where you meet the snipers and find out what happened to Boone's wife. When I finally found out who was responsible for her disappearance I was like whaaaaaat?! Now I've got Boone as my follower and that's awesome. Thank god zkylon recommended the mod that makes him weaker though, because holy shit he's deadly. Even with that mod he is still killing everything in sight. I'm seriously gonna take that sniper rifle away from him. I left off on the road to the REPCONN test site.

Well that seems a bit facetious. The point of bashed patches is that they make modded games more stable. I learned how to use Wrye Bash for Skyrim, and it's basically the same for New Vegas. I'm not that good with computers and I didn't find it too complicated to learn. There's plenty of good YouTube videos out there that show you exactly how to install and use it.

I agree that NV doesnt need as many mods as say, skyrim to make it a better game since it stands on its own pretty well, but Wyre Bash really isnt that hard to use. I just used it for Skyrim and all I had to do was right click on an esp and hit a button.

I found the opposite to be true, at least visually. Skyrim by itself is a beautiful game and I use minimal visual mods, while vanilla New Vegas was pretty ugly IMO. I use a ton of visual and texture enhancement mods and now I can say that NV looks awesome. Gameplay-wise, I can't really comment because I modded Skyrim and now New Vegas for my first playthroughs, so I don't even know what the vanilla experience is like for either.

If anything, Mod Organizer would do a better job of helping to keep his mod list more stable, with separate folders and profiles. A lot better than NMM. And the "point" of Wrye Bash is that it combines values from the mods in your load order and makes them work well together. So if one mod changes an npc's face, while another changes his outfit, a bashed patch will combine these changes instead of choosing one over another.

I agree about the visual aspect. At this point though there are so many great mods for both its hard not to go crazy. I think I was talking about making the world more interesting or something lol. NV has great writing.

i'm cool with you posting your impressions here (specially when you say flattering stuff about me) but i think you might find a better audience in either the steam thread or the new vegas ot.

and yeah boone's pretty stupid, i dunno why they made him so overpowered. in comparison almost all the other followers are completely useless.

novac's a pretty cool town, lots of stuff to do for such a small area.

well i mean if i hear "i could never succesfully mod a beth game" i'm like ok maybe you just need to take it down a notch and just stick with the basics :>

there's no need to install two dozen conflicting mods, is all i'm saying

i mean there aren't enough mods in the world to make skyrim fun for me but other than that new vegas is for the most part fine in the gameplay part since it's mostly questing and dialogue and exploring and other stuff that you can't really mod

Yeah, I've got a lot more mods installed in Skyrim, but it still ends up boring me to death. Finished New Vegas multiple times already, still never gets old.

Quick question: How do I remove a NPCs default weapon? Specifically Boone. He is way too deadly with his default sniper rifle. I want to give him a weaker weapon, but he won't equip a weapon that's weaker than his default rifle. I did a Google search and couldn't figure out how to remove the default weapon, even with console commands. I tried the "removeallitems" command and it removed everything but his rifle! So I'm at a loss.

*Edit: I updated my mod list above to include 2 mods I added:
GARU - Infinite ammo for your companions
Pick Companion Armor and Weapons

I'm trying not to add mods during my playthrough (I did that too much during Skyrim and it ended up giving me CTD issues) but those 2 mods were really to good to pass up.

Looks like this mod has what you need, but it's part of a larger toolkit if you're interested.

Perfect, thanks! I installed it and it did exactly what I wanted. For anyone who is interested in trying it out, remember to also give ammo to your companion or they won't shoot. I gave Boone a Plasma Rifle for fun but during combat he would just stand there and point his weapon without shooting. The rifle had ammo in it, but I found that I had to actually give Boone some Microfusion cells in order for him to shoot. After I figured that out everything worked perfectly. It also works with the GARU mod, if anyone was wondering.

dump boone's ass and recruit cass

ezpz :>

I don't think I've met Cass yet. From Goodsprings I went to the Mojave Outpost, then Nipton, and then Novac. Now I'm at the REPCONN test site. Is Cass at any of those places?

I always liked the reaction of hers when I choose the [Confirmed Bachelor] option in response to her when she says that she likes tough men. That was well done on Obsidians and the Voice actress part.

I like Rex the most because he is a Cyber-Dog and he has a brain in a jar. And that's freaking cool. :3

Cass is at the Outpost.

My companions have always been just pack mules and enemy distractions for me. I like to do the fighting myself :p

Looking to check out some of the custom companions, though.

Check out Willow, Ninerand Russel.

JIP Companions is by far the best follower mod out there. Nice, customizable and easy to use interface that lets you set things like infinite ammo and whether or not they draw and holster with you, as well as give orders to attack a specific target or attempt to pick a lock.

I love it and i can certainly recommend this one .
My only current issue is that after Gopher added a private Mod for his current letsplay that allows him to use hotkeys to make companions follow/stay and be aggressive /passive and seeing it in action makes makes me wish it was also added to the original mod instead of having to switch back to the companion window .

Russell is such a well-done companion, someguy is really a very good voice actor and certainly knows how to build up a character. The vanilla Russell is a bit odd-looking though, that's why I use the FCO Patch for him. Niner, as cool as he is but he just stops working when I go to Vegas with him. I can't access his inventory anymore and he stays essential, meaning that I can't change it with JIP Companions Command console. That's why I had to deinstall the mod.

As for the custom mod, maybe you could ask the mod author if it is possible to include that option in the mod, seems like a good idea.

Oh, and as for companion mods, there is also Delilah which is the daughter of a friend of Sulik, the guy from Fallout 2 who you can meet in Klamath.

cass is great, mca really did a great job with her character

rex is awesome too

much better than always annoying ed-e

They did, yes. I like that she has a lot of backstory that is connected to the other games. Well, most of the characters do, but hers is tightly connected to a person from Fallout 2 you can get as a companion.

I really do wonder if there were any plans before for the connections between 2 and future games.

The tin can always starts attacking Arcade and Co. when I leave them at the Schoolhouse, that why I always let him wait in fron of my house. :/

That makes me wish a certain Deathclaw from another Fallout game were in the vanilla NV. Miss him. :(

Hello everyone! My first time trying to mod a game so I hope I am not about to amke a huge mess.

I'd like to install

NMC Textures
Nevada Skies
Fallout Character overhaull
Flora Overhaul
Underwater Home

That should do it for now I think. I really want to just play through with enhanced visuals. Anything else I should run for stability etc?

Add Fellout NV while you're at it.

A pretty simple mod list:

- NMC texture
- Fellout
- GeDoSaTo 2x downsample

My GDST config:

Code:
scalingType lanczos

aaQuality 3
aaType smaa

ssaoType MSSAO
ssaoStrength 2
ssaoScale 1
ssaoBlurType sharp

enablePostprocessing true

post.fx modifications:

Code:
#define USE_CURVES 1
#define USE_DPX 1
#define USE_GRAIN 1

// curves setting

#define Curves_formula  2

I installed tons of FNV mod, and unless I delete+restore my saves and ini file each time I want to play it, the game will crash on startup :(
What should I do?

I dunno if there's a policy on this, but I just published my first (and likely only) mod for New Vegas: Wasteland Warrior. I added a bunch of melee-centric perks to make melee characters more varied and interesting.

Please note though: It is literally my first foray into making a mod and probably does not play well with everything. I also wanted the characters to feel strong when you max them out so it's not for a "realism" play through either.

I made this because I finished my first game of NV a month or two ago and realized I couldn't find any real melee options out there. So I made this primarily for myself but decided to actually release it since it really was absent in the mod scene afaik.

Sooooooooooo

Are a lot of the ENB's like Dynamo(one I'm currently using)not really meant to be played consistently at 60FPS? My PC really takes a hit when running this. I have very few mods installed, outside of some performance help and Type 3. I'm assuming a lot of people play with these ENBs at 30FPS. When tabbing to my Pipboy, Dynamo drops my FPS from 30-24 for no good reason. Stays at 30 most of the time, but I'd much rather have 60.

4690K
8GB RAM(fallout doesn't use this of course but yeah)
4GB GTX 770

I have been in mood for playing Fallout 3 again. I know PS3 is no-no. And I already have all dlc expansion on my 360.

I heard something about Fallout 3 GOTY (360) disc had bugs or something like that so I guess it's better to get Vanilla Fallout 3 for 360 right? I just want to double check with everyone who might be familiar with the situation here.

I know it's off topic so I apologized for that.

What are recommended texture mods for New Vegas?
Currently, I've already installed NVEC and Rudy ENB.

I just reached New Vegas, how far am I in the main story?

Can't help you with ENBs, but I can tell you that you are not all to far into the story. That's provably only 1/4 of the main story, if not less.

Wow, I thought I'm already far in the main story already, as I've already covered about half of the world map. I know there are more minor locations left to discover, but by looking at the main roads, I presume there aren't much towns left to explore.

I hate 90% of the high resolution mods that I see out there.

Sure, the texture will be better from a tecnical point of view, but most texture mods are not faithful to the original content.

I'll never understand this viewpoint.
Either. Most competent texture mods will use the important details as a base, but games (especially ones like this) are full of tiling and repeated textures whose main artistic purpose is to suit a variety of situations. No artistic meaning is lost from the game just because your 2k desert terrain texture is a slightly different shade of brown and the pebbles are in different spots.

That's why I didn't say it was all of them.

Damn, I got the infinite loop loading bug. Both of my auto and quicksave are corrupted. I have a couple manual saves but the most recent one is like 2 hours behind. Is it somewhat caused by my mods? I didn't use that much mods anyway, only NVEC, animation, texture mods and ENB.

Not possible to start a new game and reload your most recent save from there?

that sounds very cool, imma try it out next time i go melee build

people should be very much encouraged to post their own mods here!

i feel the same way

i really don't care much about texture quality all that much so not much of a difference to me to play with the original low-res stuff, so and it annoys the hell out of me to see something made of a different material or have a different design for a wallpaper or something like that

i also feel like texture mods are often very overdetailed and oversharpened to the point everything looks like it has the same screen "importance" which i find very stressful to look at. the original textures are far from perfect but i find these things annoy me enough to want to just keep the default stuff
