This worked for me combined with Vsync to eliminate screen tearing (I use RadeonPro).

Has anyone been able to get rid of the shimmering effect you get when you spin the camera around foliage? I know that downsampling fixes it but it introduces frame rate drops from time to time that I would rather avoid if I can.
 
I heard that running in borderless can alleviate the stuttering. However when I try it, the frame rate seems locked at 48 fps. My frame rate is in the 100's when I'm in normal full screen. I have a 144hz g-sync monitor.

Has anybody else run into this?

I think the shimmering effect happens when you have the god rays set to high and lower. Only ultra removes it.

I'm currently experimenting with Arkham City's SLI bits (DX1x) (0x080202F5) + AFR2 after I saw it mentioned on NVIDIA's forums and immediately it seems to be a lot more stable than just forcing AFR2 without bits (or inexplicably even with DX9 bits) along with reduced stuttering and no more sustained frame drops into the 40s like before.

I haven't spent long testing this so there may be issues I just haven't come across yet, but it's something to take a look at if other methods aren't working well.

EDIT: Getting great performance (Ultra, 1440p60, 970 SLI) and no major issues with these bits after ~1.5 hours.

Game has been working good for me, no stuttering. But I'm on an alienware laptop so it's pretty good stuff.

The only issue I had was it crashed the first time I tried to play.

After that it was smooth sailing.

That stinks if true. :(

I can run Godrays on Ultra, but the framerate drops to the high 40s and 50s at certain times when I do. When I downsample (2560x1140) the shimmering goes away but I get a few dropped frames from time to time. The lesser of two evils is just to downsample I suppose.
 
I know this is for performance, but where is the game saved locally? I need to reformat my PC and I want to back up my local save.

SSD

Played 4.5 hours straight last night and had 0 issues on Ultra. No hitching or anything.

I'm running the game fine on my rig (i7 4770k, MSI 970, 8GB Ram, Win 8.1) mostly ultra with godrays low. Getting performance others are reporting, mostly 60 except in certain city areas.

My SO's experience is different. Lesser rig (i5 4690, ASUS 680 4GB, 8GB Ram, Win 8.1) but she wanted max graphics so I set everything to ultra (except godrays low) and locked the fps to 30. Problem is, she's getting horrible stuttering that makes the game look like its running like 20fps.

Here's how i capped it. Added the ifpsclamp=30 and ipresentinterval=0 in fallout4.ini then I capped 30fps in RTSS, finally I forced vsync and tripple buffering through Nvidia Control Panel and I run the game in Windowed Borderless.

Afterburner is showing a very consistent 30fps, but like I said it appears to be running much much slower. I can't get Afterburner to show me frametimes (always shows a 0) so i'm not sure if thats the culprit.

Last piece of information: her monitor is a 1080p TV connected via HDMI. I had a hunch the monitor was reverting to 24hz in the game (like MGS Revengeance used to) so I created a custom resolution at 30hz in Nvidia control panel, and for some reason though I choose 30hz, when created the resolution reads 29hz. When on this resolution, however, I saw 0 change in the stuttering.

Anybody got an idea how to get rid of the suttering?

P.S. Already unning the updated Nvidia drivers.

Use RivaTunerStatisticsServer. Comes with MSI Afterburner, which you should probably have anyway. You can set up a profile for Fallout 4 within RTSS and cap the frame rate there.

Download RivaTuner Statistic Server - it also comes bundled with MSI Afterburner. There's a setting to limit the frame rate. Warning, though, when I lock my game to 30fps i get some nasty stuttering

I think I've found a way to get the game to run at a stable 60 fps without stutter with my rig (i5-2500K @ 4.4 GHz, GTX 970)

I can run everything at Ultra, including Ultra godrays surprisingly, and never drop below 60. The only thing that needs to be lowered is Shadow Distance which is set to medium.

Trouble areas like the Corvega factory that used to dip heavily now run very smoothly. There is a visible difference in shadow distance compared to the higher settings, but it's only really noticeable when high up.

From what I can tell it seems like situations where shadows are rendered far in the distance are causing my CPU to jump up to 100% which is in turn bottlenecking my GPU. I have a hunch Bethesda could well optimise this eventually, but for now it's very heavy on resources.

I am still yet to discover Lexington and Diamond City so I'll update my findings once I test it there.

For stutter removal, I've turned off the in-game vsync via the ini file and instead forced triple buffered vysnc through the Nvidia Control Panel. Seems to be doing an OK job so far with minimal stutter.

I'm running the game off an SSD as well which is probably helping things.
 
was there any kind of fix for the jittery framerate when you're indoors?

seems okay outside, but poking around in buildings can often result in the jittery fps.

There is no TXAA support.
TXAA is Nvidia's own take on trying to reduce shimmering and shader aliasing.
It works very well but at the cost of heavy blur.

In movement it's quite superb though, like there is very little aliasing left and everything is so "stable".

Unfortunately for me the blur is often too much, but I do use it when post-process solutions like SMAA2tx are not available, for instance ACIII and The Crew which look really good with TXAA.

TAA implementations vary between different implementations. CryEngine TAA is different to UE4 TAA, likewise for FO4. The thing that they have in common is that they are all Post Processing AA.

Now TXAA is different in that it is a lot of different AA mechanisms rolled into one. There is a MSAA pass as well as a spacial post-proc AA pass. All of these are also temporally blended.

This is why TXAA is so damn heavy and found in very limited numbers of games. Engines simply won't work well with it.

Even on Low I can't get stable 60. At Lexington and I'm skipping between 50-60 (capped at 60 with RTSS).

Doesn't seem right for my hardware. Ultra settings puts me at 35-50 fps, high et's me reach 60 but tanks to 40.

Going to try and OC tomorrow, but should I need to?

Fresh install of windows. Latest drivers.

It's really dragging down the experience.

Any advice?

Almost identical set-up. Could your overclock be what I'm missing? Surely it couldn't have /that/ much of an effect?

Try using a scope in areas with a lot of foliage. ;)
I bet it's cut in half when you do.

Yeees, finally it runs perfectly on my 970 SLI setup with a gsync monitor, Windows 10.

Did the following:
  • Used the SLI bits above
  • Rolled back to 358.87 to get gsync working properly
  • The following settings in Fallout4Prefs.ini [Display] section
    iPresentInterval=0
    bTopMostWindow=0
    bMaximizeWindow=0
    bBorderless=0
    bFull Screen=1​
  • The following settings in Fallout4.ini [General] section
    uInterior Cell Buffer=12
    uExterior Cell Buffer=144
    iNumHWThreads=8​
  • Used RTSS to cap the frame rate at 60fps
Rock solid 16.66ms frame times, all the time. Now I can finally play the game.
 
I played for two hours last night up until you reach Concord. I completed the quest about aiding the folks with their raider issue.

I have:

4790k
970 SCC 4GB
16GB RAM
Win10
Latest nVidia drivers

Running the game on a 7200rpm WD Black hard drive while the OS is on a SSD. I set everything to ultra except the god rays which are medium. I got some mouse lag in the menus but otherwise the game runs fantastic. Getting a solid 60fps from the portions I played.

Overclocking can make a big difference, and the 2500k is one of the best overclocking chips ever made. No reason not to OC it. I got my 2500k to 4.8 ghz easily and saw boosts of 10+ fps in CPU-bound games.

Whats terrible about it? If it doesn't work, remove it. It wont ruin the game in any way. Its just an extremely simple tip that might help some people. Personally, I played 100 hours of skyrim and now around 10 hours of FO4 with the setting on, and never seen anything like that.

Im not about to remove it and go back to a stutterfest because of somebody else's issues.
 
ifpsclamp got rid of most of the random Frametime increases that I got even with a smooth 60fps. But once I got to the outskirts of Diamond city I had to remove it because that's precisely where the game gets major framerate slowdowns and thus ifpsclamp just introduced slow motion.

I understand this. I've OC'd before and seen noticeable gains.

But should I be getting 50-60 on lowest graphical settings at my hardware's stock speeds? It doesn't seem right...

Based on some of the CPU benchmarks that have come out, that seems about right.
 
The game was running fine for me but today I can't load any of my save files. The game will simply crash to the desktop during loading the game.
I verified the game files within steam, restarted my PC. Not sure what else I could do. I didn't change anything between.
I hope my save files aren't corrupt. I tied loading several different ones without any success.
 
I'm starting to feel bad about purchasing this game, not because I don't like it, but the bugs and glitches are starting to pile up and I feel shitty for even supporting this. Last night in two hours and across multiple restarts:

1. Game won't start at all. No crashes, no errors. Just hit play and it sits there.

2. Loading screens are in a lower resolution, leaving blurred bars on the bottom and right side. When the game loads, the entire UI is shifted to left where the center of the lower res would be -- the crosshairs are two inches to the left of center.

3. Pipboy disappears. Press tab, all I see is arm. I can mouseover and hear beeps where I am hitting something, but I can't see anything.

4. Dogmeat and I get stuck in a doorway like it was a Three Stooges bit.

5. Exit a building (without having any enemies near by) and they are all standing there stunlocking me with melee as soon as I exit.

If you hurry you can probably still refund it with only 2 hours played on Steam.

I haven't seen a single one of those bugs in hours of messing around, but that's how it goes with Bethesda games I guess. :(
 
Lowered shadow distance to medium and while I don't like having to sacrifice that, it definitely helped my FPS big time. Dropping below 60 much less now.

Still getting random drops at times, though. Like at times when it just makes no sense. Nothing in a scene will change (at least nothing I notice) or I'll just be running along an average road with no enemies or NPC's in sight and then bam, 40 FPS. Then a few seconds later back up to 63.

Lmao, I have the same problem. I think it's just the way the game is.

Like clearing the Corvega Power Plant early on was really weird because of that. I thought I was going insane because I'd hear raider dialogue no matter where I was.

Nah, I'm passed the refund time. I played it on launch for a few hours and it was fine. This last play session was so bad. Had to restart steam multiple times, restart the game multiple times, etc.

This is on a 2500k at 4.7ghz and a 980 Ti G1. The game is locked in at ultra minus god rays which I turned down, so performance isn't the problem. I like the game, it's just so much more of a fucked up mess than Skyrim was. Feels like they rushed this out in time for the holidays.

Don't even get me started on the PC controls and UI. Waiting on mods to fix all this crap.
