Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

I've done some research on the ifpsclamp setting and it seems like a terrible thing to mess around with...

http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1581420-effects-of-the-ifpsclamp-setting-on-new-vegas/

I've had 5 hours now with the setting turned on with 3 or 4 saves and reloads of saves without any weirdness. Noticed the videos he has are with running different FPS settings with the iFPSclamp setting mismatched, which more than likely caused 100% of his problems. :p

I don't recommend running anything other than Clamp=60|FPS=60 in conjunction with each other and making sure you can maintain a solid 60fps more than 95% of the time. For many, including me, the game is simply unplayable without setting this option. I'm very sensitive to stuttering and can't stand it.

2. Loading screens are in a lower resolution, leaving blurred bars on the bottom and right side. When the game loads, the entire UI is shifted to left where the center of the lower res would be -- the crosshairs are two inches to the left of center.

I had this issue last night and disabling DSR in the NVCP cleared it up. It was weird, even the Shift+Tab menu in Steam was in a lower resolution along with achievement notifications, but the game was in 1080p.

Performance is all over the place in big cities. 35-60 on my 970.

Maybe I'll lock it to 30. How do I downsample in this game? It won't go over 1080p in the menu.

Does for me. If DSR is enabled in Nvidia's control panel.
Don't know how it works on AMD.
Make sure to run it in fullscreen though. Might have to uncheck windowed mode if it is checked in the launcher. Just a thought.

It's not default, but turning it off cleared up the issue for me, maybe it wasn't related. Is your game still doing this and is the Shift+Tab menu also in a lower resolution?

I didn't try shit+tab. I'll try it again when I get home from work tonight and see if I can replicate the issue.

On my vault door problem. The lights by the vault door still say locks engaged after hitting the red button
Edit: so much for getting my wife into this game

I crash when doing the vertibird sequence at the beginning of semper invicta at around the same place (over the river near CIT ruins). i have no clue whats the problem, tried on ultra and low settings and both crash. havent really had any crashes otherwise, anyone have any solutions?

Heh, I don't think I could ever get my wife into a Bethesda game, too many oddities that can happen to deter the experience.

I can't answer your question about if the clamp setting made the Vault door glitch, I only enabled it shortly after leaving the Vault. Seems like it may be tied in with the terminal glitch somehow? Maybe reload a save and try that section with iPresentInterval=0 and Borderless Windowed mode, that clears up the terminal bug. What are her settings/ini tweaks if any?

ive deleted ifpsclamp and verified the game, it redownloaded the intro video (the one before the main menu) and nothing helped. reloaded multiple saves too.

I would enable clipping with the TCL console command, exit the vault, save and then see what happens when loading the save. Hopefully the result will be an open vault and you standing outside of it.

Hit the ~ key, type in TCL and then hit Enter. Should be able to glide out of the Vault. Reading on Reddit seems like the game will autosave when you pass the barrier of the vault. After that you repeat the console command which should turn it off. Not sure if it messes with Achievements or if it would glitch the achievement from exiting the vault.

IMO:

The easiest and still best way to downsample is still to set a custom resolution via the NVIDIA control panel, then enable the resolution and then select it in game.
If you're on a 1080p viable try 2.400 x 1.350 (+25% per axis); 2.880 x 1.620 (+50% per axis) or 3.840 x 2.160 (+100% per axis; if your monitor can handle it).

I am not a big fan of NVIDIAs DSR solution because most of the resolutions they offer don't help if you aren't using factor 1,78, 2,25 or 4,00.

EDIT:
But 35 seems very low. Did you set god rays to ultra? if so, set god rays to high, it looks slightly worse (...) and gives you a significant boost in performance.

High Godrays

Ultra Godrays

Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing your insight. I'm sensitive to stuttering and framerate fluctuations myself (gives me a headache), so my goal is to cap it at 30. I haven't seen the game dip past 35 yet, so I figure my computer is capable of staying at 30.

Using these tweaks actually did improve performance a great deal. For whatever reason, it also increased load times on my SSD. I went from 3-5 second load times to 8-12 second load times.

(they go under [General]):

uInterior Cell Buffer=12
uExterior Cell Buffer=144
iNumHWThreads=4

All of the above increased my FPS from a shitty 30 to 60 to a very steady 60. I even increased my graphical settings in the meantime, at apparently no cost to FPS.
iPreloadSizeLimit=262144000

Well there has to be some drawback to this. You don't just magically add extra fps with some magical code.

I'm currently experimenting with Arkham City's SLI bits (DX1x) (0x080202F5) + AFR2 after I saw it mentioned on NVIDIA's forums and immediately it seems to be a lot more stable than just forcing AFR2 without bits (or inexplicably even with DX9 bits) along with reduced stuttering and no more sustained frame drops into the 40s like before.

I haven't spent long testing this so there may be issues I just haven't come across yet, but it's something to take a look at if other methods aren't working well.

EDIT: Getting great performance (Ultra, 1440p60, 970 SLI) and no major issues with these bits after ~1.5 hours.
Yeees, finally it runs perfectly on my 970 SLI setup with a gsync monitor, Windows 10.

Did the following:
  • Used the SLI bits above
  • Rolled back to 358.87 to get gsync working properly
  • The following settings in Fallout4Prefs.ini [Display] section
    iPresentInterval=0
    bTopMostWindow=0
    bMaximizeWindow=0
    bBorderless=0
    bFull Screen=1
  • The following settings in Fallout4.ini [General] section
    uInterior Cell Buffer=12
    uExterior Cell Buffer=144
    iNumHWThreads=8
  • Used RTSS to cap the frame rate at 60fps
Rock solid 16.66ms frame times, all the time. Now I can finally play the game.

Disabled AFR2 and went with the Arkham City bits. Very smooth and pretty much perfect SLI. 55/60fps on my 580s...they still have some juice left in them.

I was thinking about about fooling around with this to improve performance, but I think I´ll play vanilla, this game is a fucking mess I would hate to fuck my saves.

Press the ~ key to open the console, type tcl then press enter, then ~ to close the console. Do the same thing to turn collision back on after.

Console is very useful on PC, can fix lots of problems with it.
Thanks man it worked! I just went through the vault door and up the elevator and it loaded me into the waste land!

The gpu usage is pretty strange on my 980ti. When i push ugrids to 11, the framerate drops to 30-35 but the gpu load stays at 50%. What's happening to the other 50% ? Is the engine not capable of handling more than 5 ugrids ?

CPU can't keep up. Need to overclock, upgrade or hope that Bethesda optimize the game a bit more. DX12 would probably help in scenarios like this too.

Yeah i thought about something similar, but even the Nvidia Tweaking Guide Benchmark with an 4ghz i7 shows only 35fps.

I'm confused Fallout4Prefs.ini is located in C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Fallout4 and E:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\Fallout4
which one do I modify?

Its an awesome game, but damn do these game companies optomize their games anymore. Shit, you pay 60 bucks just so you can do it for them, or wait patch after patch.

That's my thing. I love playing Bethesda games and Fallout will likely be my GOTY, but there is no excuse. GTA V looked better and performed better at launch. I know it's not a fair comparison, but there are other open world games too. Mad Max is another example. One of the best PC ports I've seen. Again, I love the game but there is no excuse, not even a little.

The ifpsclamp setting got rid of a lot of the stuttering that I was experiencing. It's not completely gone, but it's far less noticeable (though the framerate still tends to hover between 56 and 59fps for the most part), and actually playable now. Game still isn't particularly well-optimized (e.g. the power plant has some heavy drops).

It's quite funny that Rockstar of all people put out a waaaay better PC port than Bethesda. And that was on launch day without needing extra patches.

This is the first game since I built my PC in 2013 that I had to bump down to 720p because I couldn't handle the frame rate dips. Might be time to think about getting a new video card I suppose.

Yet you shouldn't be surprised. Bethesda games always run like ass. On the recent Giant Bombcast they had Dave Lang on and while he's not a Bethesda developer, he had some interesting insight about how these games actually work.

A friend linked this and some are saying it could be one of the many reasons for bad performance...?

Look up OCCLUSION CULLING and DYNAMIC SHADOWS. The only reason why you can see anything in your screenshots is because the camera can see it. When you're on the playable terrain, nothing below ground is rendered. This has ZERO impact on performance, and everyone here who understands graphics technology is laughing at you.

I was pumped to play this game on the new PG279Q so I could ball out with the 165hz and GSYNC, only to learn that the game will be completely fucking broken if I do that.

I cannot believe they didn't fix this shit. Fallout 4 = Skyrim mod.

wait how about 144hz or why would this monitor not work with Fallout?!

Just like the other Bethesda games on this engine, changing the FOV in the .ini files never works for me. I always have to use the console. Why? Why does this happen lol
