Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Do any other 5.1 uses feel that the audio is too touchy or just wrong this game?

YES! So bad I often walk in the wrong direction wondering where the enemy is. Sometimes somebody will talk to me and it sounds like they are right behind me but they are in front of me. Super annoying. I've switched to stereo cans but the problem remains.

Not seeing any difference in performance. I loaded up a save next to the corvega plant and looked down the distance where It usually drops to the 40's/30s and it's still the same.

Yeah, I use headphones with a Xonardgx (dolby headphones), the audio mix is all over the place. Ennemies will sound very close even when on other floors, the NPCs audio is too soft, sound position sometimes feel off, etc..

Typical Bethesda audio mixing then.

How do you tell the current version number? I think the new patch is refusing to download for me for whatever reason but I don't know how to check the version number to confirm.

Edit: It shows up in a small corner of the settings window apparently. Strange that Steam doesn't mention it downloaded a patch yet it did update to the latest version at some point.

v0.287 ENBSeries beta is out

ENBSeries 0.287 beta (graphic mod) / ENBoost (patch)

Added depth of field shader with example code for bokeh dof, computation of focusing distance without first person models and aperture. Added aperture texture to enbeffect.fx shader as result of depth of field processing. Added depth of field parameters to enbseries.ini.

ENBSeries v0.288

Added enbbloom.fx and enblens.fx shaders as examples for preset makers, bloom is drawed after depth of field and lens after bloom. Added parameters and lens texture to enbeffect.fx shader. Added RenderTargetRGB32F temporary render target to depth of field and post process shader for optimization purposes. Changed render targets format of enbeffectpostpass.fx to 32 bit with 10 bits per color channel and 2 bits for alpha, performance is more important than quality difference which nobody can see when using 64 bit format. Added dithering. Fixed mistakes in my comments for shader files.

I'm getting a game-breaking bug where NPCs cut themselves off and start each sentence too early. The lip syncing doesn't match up either. It's very distracting and ruining what appears to be some very interesting conversations. Haven't made it past the first couple quests yet because of this.

unmodded/beta/980 Ti/165Hz monitor

^ is this a framerate issue?

It is related to the framerate, yes. There still seem to be some issues with high framerates. 90 FPS was the most stable framerate for me.

So for those using global texture replacement mods, are insanely long loading times still a common thing? Does the game have an issue sorting through a large number of extraneous textures? Whenever I try to load any exterior, it takes 3-5+ minutes to load.

The game is almost unplayable if I use fast travel or enter and exit buildings frequently. This may be my fault for using mods right off the bat, but is anyone else using terrain overhaul mods encountering the same issue?

Also, a possibly related issue, but my guns take 30 seconds to load most of the time whenever I swap them out, and I spend most of the time running around frantically trying to survive while being unable to shoot.

How would this game run on a i5-6600k and GTX 970? Everything maxed at 1080p 60fps? Or will I need to turn down certain settings?

Define global replacement. I have a few replaces for weapons, some armor, rain, water, rocks, some grass/trees, total about 25 mods right now. While I did notice longer load times it's still under 20 sec or so.
This is on Intel 3770, 16gb, 500gb SSD (separate from OS) and GeForce 980ti.

What mods did you load and what are your system specs?

Thanks for the reply. I have a 780M, 24GB, 4700HQ. Unfortunately FO4 is installed on a 5400 RPM hard drive, not my SSD.

As for mods, I installed high resolution textures for exteriors based on a number of mods mentioned in this thread and posted on f4 nexus. Weapons, ground and building textures, rocks, trees etc have all been increased in fidelity by several degrees, including a mix of Faraway Area Reform, Vivid Fallout - Landscapes - Textures in HD and Optimized Vanilla Textures. Is my hard drive the issue? I suppose I should just delete my mods and reinstall if others aren't having the same problems.

Your HDD is most definitely the issue. 4710HQ, 16GB and 970M here and loading times are about 3-6 seconds moving between areas as the game is sitting on an SSD. HDD's are slow, and 5400rpm drives are the slowest. It doesn't help that Bethesda games are notoriously IO bound.

Thank you. I wish you could install steam games to different directories easily. I guess I'll try installing it on an SSD sometime, the load times are pretty unbearable right now. At least I understand that its my drive that's causing the problem.

You should check out Steam Mover. It makes it really easy to transfer over games to another drive, so it's perfect in your case for FO4. http://www.traynier.com/software/steammover

I know a lot of people come into these threads with their specs and want to know how the game runs so I was hesitant to ask, however I have yet to see anybody in my kind of position.

So I have a GTX 680 2gb edition. I know I would have to make compromises with the settings, but I'm most worried about my processor. I have a second generation quad Intel core i5 2.61ghz. General opinion seems to be that Fallout 4 seems to take advantage of more CPU than the previous uses of the engine (Skyrim, Fallout 3 etc).

I just wanted to know if anybody dabbled with the settings on a rig like my own. I have been really wishing I could partake in the PC version of this game, unfortunately my funds are a dry lake and I cannot justify the purchase. So if you have any feedback on the spec range I have let me know (even private message if possible) this would really help me out with my temptation to buy this on PC.

You act like your hardware is trash. You will get 60 most of the times except the problematic areas that everyone has problems with.

You're going to have to lower shadow distance and godrays and even then you'll have framedrops in certain areas. Other than that, it's smooth 60fps 90% of the time. That's my experience anyways on i5 4690, 8gb 1600mhz ram, 1tb samsung 850 evo, and gtx970.

Infuriating how one second, this game runs buttery smooth with some of the most impressive lighting I've ever seen only to see the framerate get halved the other second because I don't know.

Gonna have to turn down a bit, like godrays and shadows.

Even then the game can still be quite inconsistent.

Okay thanks for the heads up. Just did a little reading in this thread and it's amazing how turning down god rays can give you a 20fps swing. Surprised though that I'll still get drops even with settings turned down. All I ask for decent optimization. Don't want to be brute-forcing the whole of this gen :/

No I'm not lol. I can't run TW3 at max for 1080p 60fps which is understandable considering how good it looks so it makes sense that other games will be just as demanding or more so as this generation goes on. Looks like with FO4 that it's just not very well optimised. Classic Bethesda.

I'm debating if I want to buy this again for my laptop. I already have it for my Xbox but they have the pit boy edition up for grabs again and I want to know how well will it work with these specs.

Processor 2.6 GHz Core i7 6700HQ
RAM 16 GB DDR3L SDRAM
Graphics Coprocessor 4gb NVIDIA GeForce 960M

Just in case you don't know, the GTX 960M is literally a GTX 750 Ti, with slightly lower (~100MHz) memory clocks.

Just bought an SSD, is there a difference in loading times between having the OS installed in the SSD or not?

No idea but it's probably recommended as it means anything using system files will give overall system smoothness I guess? Anyway, this game benefits from an SSD so much I can't believe it. I played on a WD Black HD before and load times for outdoor or initial loading took from 30s to 1m+ to about 5 seconds max for everything from loading the exe to running around in the outdoor areas or fast traveling. No joke o_O.

So how do you shut off the Beta updates for this game? I turned it on to get one of the early beta fixes for one of the game-breaker bugs in Win10, but there doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off, and beta keeps wanting to dick with mods.

I Googled it, and it says there's supposed to be a "Beta" tab in the game's Properties where you can uncheck it, but that tab doesn't exist.

Not sure if this has always been the case, but this game seems to be making my R9 290 run super, super loud. Doesn't really make sense given how it looks :/

the beta update and the actual update are exactly the same, so it doesn't actually matter (and is also the reason you can't opt out).

You can't opt out of the nonexistent beta (currently). If it bothers you to see the beta after Fallout 4 in your steam tab, just uninstall FO4 and reinstall.

So I just picked up a 1440p monitor my first one 2 days ago. I seem to be unable however to run fallout 4 at that resolution in borderless windowed mode....is this a known issue?

No problems here, check .ini files and see if it's been correctly set to your resolution?

A tip for AMD users with high performing cards, I'm not sure if it's been posted but no harm if it has already:

Tessellation is what destroys performance with godrays, but setting the godrays to 'Low' in the game settings introduces some horrible pixelation around objects -

Low w/ no change to tessellation in CCC
87BrFb5.jpg

So instead, set them to Ultra and limit the tessellation in CCC to 16, and as far as I've noticed they perform very well and look great -

Ultra with tessellation set to override on '16'
aKy73Cs.jpg

The drawback is that with walls with many holes in, light shafts will behave a little erratically, but for the most part it is as performant as the low setting and looks stunning outdoors.

Edit: setting of 32 in CCC seems fine too, ymmv

Thanks setting it in the ini worked for me.

Why can't I get a PS4 controller to work on this game? When I hard wire it in, it randomly disconnects which has caused my game to crash quite a few times. And even when it "works" the buttons often don't work the way they're supposed to (L3/R3 don't work, X causes my favorites menu to open).

And when I use DS4Windows the disconnections and button confusion stop, but none of my menu buttons work so I can't pause the game or enter any settlement/view options. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong here?
