Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

I'm debating if I want to buy this again for my laptop. I already have it for my Xbox but they have the pit boy edition up for grabs again and I want to know how well will it work with these specs.

Processor 2.6 GHz Core i7 6700HQ
RAM 16 GB DDR3L SDRAM
Graphics Coprocessor 4gb NVIDIA GeForce 960M

Hardware alone is better than the bone. You can optimize it from there to whatever balance of performance and iq you want.

Does anyone remember how to fix the game dropping to desktop a few seconds after you launch it? I had the problem, and then I fixed it, but now it's back.

I think its related to RTSS. Try disabling that and see if it resolves the problem, obviously not a permanent solution but you'll know what's causing it then.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I did these steps and it still doesn't work. I tried deleting the files in the fallout 4 folder and verifying game files in steam. Then I reinstalled the files for ENBoost plus binaries and still nothing. Is this comparable with the new fallout 4 beta?
Did you restart your computer?

For anyone really keeping up - my random BSODs came back a while after I did the Nvidia driver reinstall. I ended up using ENB to force the framerate down to 60 (had it previously locked at 85 since I have a 144hz monitor) and haven't had a single crash since. (sadly just in time for me to finish most of the game..)

Installing this today on a 980 Ti Gsync system. What do I need to do settings wise?

God rays on low, any other good tips or special things I need to do for max efficiency in performance? I haven't kept up with this thread since launch.

ENBSeries v0.286 beta

Added support of temporary render targets for enbeffectpostpass.fx shader file and new textures for it, temporary targets have predefined formats and full screen size. Added enbadaptation.fx external shader for eye adaptation effect. Added adaptation parameters to enbseries.ini config file. Changed format of main enbeffectpostpass.fx render targets to 16 bit per channel format to hide color banding completely. Fixed all reported bugs.

24GB hot damn

so besides my question in the post above, I'd also like to know if any patches have gone live yet or is everything still in beta that I have to sign up for somewhere?

Depending on your monitor setup, you should be able to nearly max everything out. There are some trouble areas you'll find that no matter what you do, your fps will dip. Shadow Boost mod will help out to some extent. Shadow distance is the biggest hit on your fps so maybe mess with that first, then god rays for a performance gain. Most people agree that there is little difference between ultra and low god rays, but if it bothers you to see the "low" on your settings...

Opt in for the beta updates if you want to.
Code:
Library>Fallout 4>Properties>Beta
will show you a dropdown menu and you can do that. I think the latest fixes the SLI profile and a glitch for high refresh monitors.

You don't need godrays on low presuming your gsync monitor is 1440p or lower. Heck you can probably keep it on high, just not ultra. Shadow distance on high. Everything else you can crank up.

There will be a few shitty areas, but they'll be shitty no matter your settings.

Playing the game at a mostly solid 60 fps on a 390 but I'm getting a super annoying micro stutter that seems to happen every 2 seconds or so. Anybody got any idea on how to fix this?

Thanks guys!

Are the beta patches stable? Do most of you opt in or not?

I went on the latest Beta patch on Friday and things have been completely stable so far, performance is definitely that little bit better too. The only annoying thing is to constantly make sure plugins.txt is set to read only because they've automatically disabled mods for these patches.

Playing fullscreen? There is a stutter problem when I do fullscreen. I've been playing windowed borderless and it's smooth.

I have the exact opposite problem. Smooth in fullscreen and stuttery in borderless windowed. But that's like every single game for me now.

Windows 10 though. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Do you guys have ENBoost installed? If not, it helps. A lot.

again, quality from low to high is barely noticeable but more fps hit. Keep it low

Yes. Nvidia's latest drivers added it. Works great.

Nice, haven't tried it out myself but I thought people were reporting the drivers added support but it wasn't functioning yet?

What performance boost are people getting with SLI enabled?

It does offer a big performance boost, but it looks like Nvidia just took what people tried that seems work and added to the new drivers.

Did you restart your computer?

I finally figured out the problem. I removed the GameRendererOverlay64.dll file from the root of my steam folder and it worked. I had done that on my previous install but I had forgotten to do it again when I reinstalled my computer. I hope this helps someone else who has this issue.

The performance of this game is really annoying. It has such dramatic fps drops in the cities. I was hoping going to a 4690k at 4.4 ghz fron a 1090t would help. I'm still on a 6950 and 1066 ram. Next upgrade for me looks like the ram because I'm waiting for the new wave of graphics cards.

My settings for this game have nothiing to do with it. It's like this for all games. Witcher 3, Battlefield 4, Fallout 4.... etc etc.

Fullscreen = smooth

Windowed\Borderless = choppy

3770k @ 4.5Ghz
2x 980TI in SLI
16GB RAM
Displays: 3440x1440 primary, 2560x1440 secondary
Hard drives: 2x Crucial MX200 500GB
Windows 10

I recall other people having similar issues:

Borderless Windowed always gave me in a performance hit in TW3. It does in every game that offers a Borderless mode, actually. Not sure if it was that significant, but definitely was enough for me to notice. I've always stuck with Fullscreen for that reason.

Yep, I can confirm.

4K
Windows 10 latest build
Latest Nvidia Drivers 353.54

69fps fullscreen
41fps Borderless Window
40fps Window

Something is messed up.

I see that the game is now using the full gpu clock of my titan x where as before it would NEVER get to max no matter what was going on the screen. Not sure if it was patch or latest drivers though.

Oh. You are SLI. That explains it.

JUST AN FYi for those who do not know:

Beta patches disable mod plugins on the launcher.

I think this was done on purpose though? For obvious reasons anyways...

Apparently the live patch also disables all ESP's so any patch mod that uses them will stop working.

Workaround is to bypass the launcher (rename fallout4.exe to falloutLauncher.exe and vice versa). Next patch will reset the filenames, so if the next one also disables esp's, you need to redo this workaround.

Edit: Mod, not patch, of course.

oh word?? good to know, thanks.

Any difference between the last beta and this new patch? I can't unsub from the beta channel in the games properties anymore and the game still says [beta] in Steam.

Honestly Bethesda might be waiting to officially support mods until the Creation Kit is released. It's stupid but that might be their logic.

Yeah, horrible performance in borderless is one of the reasons I said farewell to SLI.

Well unfortunately if you want to play at high resolutions with good image quality, adding another graphics card is the only way to go. I don't mind fullscreen. It's just that sometimes it's more convenient to play in a window.

Does the new patch fix the money exploit?

The one where you buy all the ammo of one type, then sell back one bullet, then sell back the rest but one sticks, which you sell again a few times. Then you buy the pile again, only there is a number overflow which after a few times makes the shop owe you a ton of caps.

Does the new patch fix the money exploit?

That's probably at the very very bottom of their priority list. Fixing actual bugs > preventing people from cheating if they want to. Hell if you're on PC and you're willing to do that exploit, just use the console instead...

Cross posting from the OT. It it feels like the third person aim stutter while moving glitch is fixed for controller users!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!exclamation111!!

Not sure if there's any difference but I'm not waiting to find out. If you want to switch to stock Fallout 4 just rename your Fallout 4 directory, tell Steam to delete local content, rename the folder back and then install back to the same location.

Think I came across an audio bug. I have a static sound going constantly in the background of the game. It's not there in title or load screens etc, but as soon as I get back to gameplay, there it is.

First I thought my hardware was messing up somewhere but it's not, its definitely something in this game....
