Fallout New Vegas |OT| Obsidian does what Bethesdon't

I also really enjoyed getting vilified by everyone and having to wear disguises wherever I go

it's a bit annoying at times but the disguise system is such a cool concept that gets so underused, and playing new vegas: blood money just feels great when you pull it off and you end up taking quests from both the legion and the ncr only to murder them all in the end >:D

That's actually a really, really cool idea. I've never thought of infiltrating as one of their own simply to kill them... Maybe that's why I've always had to kill so many people in past playthroughs...

the system is kinda clunky and dogs and some important dudes will see through your disguise but it's fun to try

I'm getting some insane framerate issues on the PS3 version.

Saved those slaves in Cottonwood Cove and now the Old Mormon Fort is almost unplayable. Takes maybe five seconds just for a single frame. Hope that doesn't interfere with getting back ED-E, or allying with them later on.

You would think they would have fixed it a little over the years. I love the game, but the jank has made me just turn it off more than a few times.

obsidian canned half or more the people they hired for the game since they didn't get the review score bonus so yea, if bethesda didn't do anything about skyrim, you shouldn't expect much of a developer that got fucked over themselves.

console games being a bitch to patch for is one of the things I hope they fix in the new generation.

One interesting build to try would explosives + melee. Have a melee weapon for backup, try to get access to the NCR Correctional Facility as early as possible. If you don't want to fight you can try playing a criminal minded character and get in through connections and dialogue checks. Do the Powder Gangers stuff to get as much stockpile of explosive weapons as possible. Play the rest of the game as a crazy fucker blowing everyone up. :D

This is a great build for the new Fallouts. Try to get Knock Knock ASAP & have fun putting a whuppin' on the wasteland.

It's one of my favorite games of the generation, but you should really get the PC version if you can.

So after renewing gaming as a hobby in the wake of a refreshing 1.5 year absence, I was looking through a thread on "games of the generation" to pick up on what I'd missed, and - perhaps this says more about me and mine preferences than it does about the game's reputation - I was really kinda shocked to see how few times FNV was mentioned.

To me, the incredible personality, wit, and depth balanced delicately between an open world and a scripted one (few games do this better, or at all) puts it easily in the echelon of my all-time favorites, and I don't have to think twice about comparing it. The third one doesn't compare, either - every aspect is subtly but definitely worse, in the way that you'd expect having Obsidian and the old Black Isle folk redesign a Bethesda concept of their own former work. Bugs are whatever for me- I was fortunate enough to rarely or never encounter them in my various playthroughs, though I suppose this varies by player.

Anyways, the catalyst for this all was my picking up a new copy of the GOTY edition and readying to dive back in with a new build. Hopefully my memories of the game have faded enough that it will be fresh now, having some distance from my "normal goody two shoes" and "cannibal legionnaire" playthroughs all those months ago.

Cannibal Legionnaire is one of the most fun ways to play. I love eating piles of victims.

Fallout New Vegas is the best RPG I have ever played.

i lost my save after i built my new pc. i guess i didnt understand how steam saves work and didnt copy the right file.

I was doing a shotgun specialist build. Now i want to try a pyromancer build. I understand the shiskebab is the defacto pyro weapon since it gains bonuses from all the pyro skills AND melee skills but, i was kind of hoping to stick to large guns.

anyone who has tried it can give me their experiences with such a build?

Any build works, really. I found it very difficult to completely mess up your character. I've made an energy weapons build, a melee build and other builds that don't focus on anything special. Basically everything works.

Honest Hearts was terribly mediocre. Very forgettable and short.

Dead Money was pretty damn cool, though. Quite unique, some good horror elements and a respectable length. The beeping could get annoying after a while, though....

On to Old World Blues. I hear this is the good one, so I'm looking forward to it.

Then I'll play Lonesome Road and that'll probably be it. Main game was fun, but I dunno, not really special enough to merit an entire 2nd playthrough. I'll be quite happy with my partial one just so I can experience all the DLC for the first time.

Played though the Big MT DLC and really liked it. Got a strong Venture Brothers vibe off that one, but the combat got really weird. I have 100 stealth and the suit on, but people were able to see me clear as day, and a lot of my shots just weren't connecting. Still really like the Sink and finding all the personalities. And there were a lot of fun rewards for playing through it.

Now I'm in Dead Money and this might be the worst DLC I've ever played. I can't wait for this trash heap to be over. Poison clouds, enemies that only die when limbs are crippled (and also negate my stealth somehow), weak guns, annoying allies, very similar environments, and those fucking bomb collar tickers. The core concept is a neat idea but I just don't see how any of this could be considered fun. Are the rewards even worth it? Because I haven't found anything of value yet and I'm right at the tail end.

Dead money is more story motivated. Finishing up Elijah's story was really rewarding and then back filling it through the other dlcs was fun, at least for me.

I can certainly see how much of a pain it could be for a lot of folks, but I liked it well enough.

I understand each and every one of these complaints. Yet, on my second playthrough I noticed one thing that made me weirdly enough like these annoyances of Dead Money (except maybe the collar):

Instead of thinking that you're playing a Bethesda game or Fallout game, try being in the mindset of someone playing System Shock 2

Also, you can kill those ghost people by shooting/hitting them once they're unconscious. No need to wait them get up so you can cripple them, if that's what you've been doing. Just give 'em the good old double tap.

Right at the very end you'll find something really valuable, but otherwise no. That DLC wants to keep you scrounging for what little weaponry and healing items you can find. If you got too much good or valuable stuff before the end, it'd ruin that somewhat.

I've finally gotten passed the point where I usually stop playing NV. I'm currently only lvl 8 but I'm already at The Strip...is that too low at this point in the game? Pretty sure I've done most of the stuff on the way over here though. Last thing I did before this was the Helios quest line. Didn't see much else on the way over here.

I got lost on the way and cleared out vault 3 apart from motor runner that bumped my levels up. Is there better armor available than reinforced leather armor i'm at the point where you go met Caesar. Some new weapons wouldn't hurt either i'm currently using the laser RCW or Vance's smg.

I can't play this anymore.

When shooting is one of the main aspects of your game and its glitchy and controls terribly, I can't spend my time on it. I really wanted to play and like this game, because outside of the gunplay it seems great. Unfortunately they absolutely blew it when it comes to shooting...I don't think I've played a game with worse mechanics.

At least I only paid $2.50

that's kind of hyperbolic but yea, it's def not good

use vats if you don't like it or something?

VATS is a crutch(a very mediocre one)...Especially when you're being outnumbered by enemies and you run low on it. Maybe you can build it up more throughout the game, but this is something I can't overlook to push me along.

AP does increase as you level up, have you got any companions yet? They do help in combat quite a bit.

well it's an rpg on a bethesda engine, you can't really do much better than new vegas

I think the combat is tolerable enough but that's up to each, but I can assure you the rest of the game is worth the trouble. the writing, quest design, world-building and how they make your character skills matter is all best-in-class

Agreed there, 100%...Those aspects are completely nailed. The issue I can't get past is going into VATS, having 95% on someones head with a .357 magnum and when I shoot I just see a blood splatter come from their head. Yea their head gets blown off 1 or 2 shots later(with no VATS energy left) but that's the type of stuff I can't overlook when shooting is a main component of your game. Again, really unfortunate...but I can't overlook it.

well that's valid enough, as vats and combat in general is where the game is at its weakest. I personally just play it on real time and try to pretend I'm playing a shittier version of stalker but I'm not too picky so that's just me.

I think there are mods that make damage be a little more extreme if you're interested in giving it another shot, but you know, you shouldn't play a game you don't like

Is it the bullet sponginess or lack of damage modelling that is bothering you?

Sponginess. The damage model is pretty neat when it works like it should! The way you can chop limbs with a cleaver or how they get blown apart with dynamite is actually quite cool in an old-school gaming way. The sponginess is the real problem and I stated what I mean by that above.

If there was a mod for realistic physics as far as how damage is dealt to regular people, I'd be golden. I don't wanna put the game down, but this issue forces my hand.

Is that kind of what you want?

The JE Sawyer mod blows up FNV each time I try to run it now. I did a wipe/reinstall and still got the same results. Shame.

Is that the only mod you're using? Last I checked, you need to have all the DLC including the GRA and Courier's Pack and put it at the end of the load order.

It was, but I've since given up and moved on to new, sexier mods.

I've actually run it successfully with several mods installed before, but something went awry along the way.

Just started playing! The vanilla version on 360 as I do not have a gaming PC (sounds like I am missing a treat with the mods though). Just reached Primm now, so early in the game but already loving the humour e.g. The story of Vickie and Vance :)

The game was a bargain at £2 preowned. I think this will consume my upcoming 2 days off work :)

You ain't missing that much really, since the base game alone is so large.
What you're missing, though, are bugfixes. NV is one of the buggiest games around... be careful around that one trading post near Vegas itself.

And save often, in many save files!!!

show off :p. Try project Nevada it unbalanced the base game with some of the gear, but the content added is great nice and big.

Be careful some of the companion quests are a bit iffy to start as well.

You gonna flip out. JESawyer is a must for me after repeat playthroughs, it's made by one of the more famous developers.

I'd add too that DLC- as great as it is- definitely made my load times and general activity on 360 suffer. That was a long time ago, I think there's been revised 360s since then. But the additional content does raise the level cap to 35 which is pretty fucking unbalanced to a point, perks, and quests.... And they're all generally wonderful, Old World Blues being the best FOREVER!!!11

A bit of a warning for each of the DlCs i have played:

DEAD MONEY

Dead money is based on a more lore driven story. there is a big emphasis on character interactions and a more "mature" dialogue.

in terms of game mechanics, Its NV's answer to players who want a more stealth based, melee focused and resource deprived gameplay. basically, Dead money is a survival Horror genre DLC. Think of resident Evil. Monsters who seem invincible or tough to kill, with areas blocked off or with dangerous mechanics that force you to think about going into a room rather than go in guns ablazing. Also having to rely on foodsnacks isntead of popping a stim pack.

definetaly made for players with their melee/survival skill points raised. Most everyone that plays fallout plays with a guns/long range and non-stealth mindset so that's why this DLC is so controversial. but once you realize what the developers wanted to accomplish, it makes you more apperciative.

Honest Hearts

More of an adventure role DLC. big open spaces, hidden stashes and plenty of discovery. has a more subdued storyline but gives big insight in a character often spoken about. geared more towards the traditional gameplay of long range fighting. enemies carry very powerful weaponry for a GUNS skilled player. kinda meh if you think about it. open-world and non-sequential.

Old World Blues

A more campy, light comedy romp that's goofy and reminiscent of 1960s science fiction. a mix of both Honest Hearts and Dead Money, has a more sequential storyline setup but allows for some exploration and liberty as to how to tackle every task.

Has an extremely abundant amount of equipment that is useful for any build (the weapons do hella good damage vs everything, but tear robots APART) and is particularly good dlc to go in a farm.

More oriented for a Energy weapons/melee character, but has a little bit of everything for everyone. NOW ONTO THE TECHNICAL ISSUES WITH OWB:

1- the enemies have maxed out perception (or was it glitched perception) so if you can see their bars in the bottom of the screen, they will already have noticed you long before you have.

2- The higher the level you enter the more powerful they are. (or was it you need at least lvl 15 to attempt it? i forgot, they are just tough).

haven't finished lonesome road

3- There is a glitch with the character models in OWB, particularly the snakedog things (forgot their name). You can go into VATS at point blank range and you will still MISS 8/10 times.

4- Keep track of DT and enemy types. The scorpions in particular hit hard and have lots of tank.

About to finish up my Very Hard/Unarmed/Hardcore playthrough of Old World Blues. I had finished the main game way back when it first came out, but was pissed when I couldn't leave the final area at the end. Luckily a mod came out to fix that, so I finally went through the DLC.

Dead Money - I...didn't like this one that much. Interesting premise, but the collar was irritating and honestly I just didn't have fun with it.

Honest Hearts - I enjoyed this one. The two factions weren't all that great, but the new map to explore and some of the missions were decent.

Lonesome Road - Really enjoyed this one. It was irritating how goddamn vague Ulysses was the whole time, but for my Unarmed character there was some decent challenge here and there. And of course, RAWR

Old World Blues - Like I said, I haven't finished it, but I appreciate the ridiculous humor. Reminds me of some of the dialogue in F1/F2. Lots of penis jokes. Luckily I'm like Level 47, so the Mister Gutsies, the bane of my existence in F3, are a piece of cake. Having 200+ Stimpacks doesn't hurt either.

Is there a better way of getting mods than Nexus?

What do you mean "better"? Nexus is the best mod database for NV there is, AFAIK. You can probably find mods from ModDB and elsewhere though. Not as many though.

If you mean installing... your choices are the Nexus installer, or manual installing. And OMOD/BAIN or something like that. (Me, i stick to manually installing mods always, have always various problems with installer programs)
