Famitsu Sales: Week 41, 2024 (Oct 07 - Oct 13)

[Weekly software and hardware sales figures] "Metaphor: ReFantasio" takes the top spot! "Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO" and "Silent Hill 2" also get off to a strong start [10/7-10/13]

Sales ranking announced by Famitsu. This time, we bring you a summary of the estimated weekly sales figures for game software and hardware from October 7th to October 13th, 2024.

Five of the top 10 titles in this week's ranking are new to the list (four titles if counted by platform). Taking the top spot among them is the PlayStation 5 version of Metaphor: ReFantasio. As a completely new fantasy RPG by the creators of the Persona series this title has attracted attention from all quarters and has already sold over one million units worldwide. The PlayStation 4 version is also doing well coming in at fourth place.

Coming in second is the 3D fighting action game Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO, based on the globally popular Dragon Ball. It has been reported that the game has sold over 3 million units worldwide within 24 hours of its release.

Coming in third is SILENT HILL 2, a full remake of the psychological horror game released for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. This title also has many fans both in Japan and overseas and it was announced that as of October 11, 2024 the total number of units shipped worldwide had exceeded 1 million.

Following these the packaged version of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (a full 3D remake of the first game in the Wizardry series) which can be said to be the origin of dungeon RPGs also ranked 6th. It is expected that sales will gradually increase from here.

Damn, some big releases this week! 108k for Metaphor is a good performance, but I was expecting it would do a tad better than P3R (I guess the PS5 version technically achieved that, but the PS4 SKU sold fewer units - 27k Metaphor copies compared to 40k P3R copies).
  1. [PS5] Persona 3 Reload (ATLUS, 02/02/24) – 76,368 (New)
  2. [PS4] Persona 3 Reload (ATLUS, 02/02/24) – 40,024 (New)

Curious about the sales figures of Metaphor vs FF7 Rebirth on ps5

FF7 Rebirth sold about 265K in Japan its first week. Pretty impressive for a “bust” considering it had less than 3 years of dev time.

I’m glad both games are awesome. People want to dunk on Rebirth’s sales to pump up Metaphor but it’s not needed. There’s room enough for both Atlus and SquareEnix to make great RPGs imo.

As I said, I was just curious since tons of people as you said, were dunking on Rebirth's launch. I'm a massive fan of Rebirth and it's my Goty so far.

Because it was one of the worst debuts ever for a FF game in Japan… And possibly the worst selling main line FF title ever over there.

Rebirth, Metaphor, Yakuza 8 and Shadow of the Erdtree for me. Leaning toward Rebirth but ask me again after I play another 80 hours of Metaphor. Long live Japan 🇯🇵

On the bright side, the only console to sell more units than the previous week was Xbox.

Not bad for Metaphor, I predicted 100-150k in a Famitsu thread a few weeks ago and with digital it's probably somewhere in the middle of that guess. Remember it's on PC too, so should be around 150-175k in Japan week one factoring in all digital sales too. It'll go on to do 300-500k in Japan and 2-3mil worldwide and eventually 3mil+.

TLDR: It's a success!

Switch gaming had a good run in Japan. It's now over.

It shows that Japan gamers just want games tailored to their tastes! Ideally AA gaming. SIlent Hill 2 doesn't count as AAA here been only a remake.

Not surprising that it did under P3R IMO; Metaphor is essentially a new IP, P3R is a remake of the 3rd game in a series that saw an explosion in popularly due to P5. For a new IP I think Metaphor's numbers are quite good in Japan, and physical wasn't that far below P3R's (~108K vs ~ 116K, so only about a 5% drop)

Bigger question I think is what the digital sales are, and if Xbox contributed in any way whatsoever for digital. If sales splits play out similarly outside of Japan, where MS had marketing rights....they will likely never do a marketing deal like this again (and this one was probably on Phil's insistence; he doesn't have leeway with the higher ups anymore like he did 2 years ago).

Now tell that to the purple forum....

Xbox marketing for metaphor paying off big time in Japan

TBF they didn't have marketing rights for it in Japan....thank goodness too otherwise the game likely wouldn't have charted at all.

...and that's digitally (Famitsu/Media Create don't track digital but still). Physical would've been absolutely nothing.

Nuts isn't it.

I'm still trying to work out who that marketing deal was good for. Maybe it involved a bag of money and an agreement for gamepass in 6-12 months time.

Just to be clear, the marketing deal does not include Asia, because everyone knows Xbox is dead there (no one predicted the same would happen in Europe this gen, though). So SEGA/Atlus could actually mention PlayStation (and Steam) in their marketing for that part of the world.

The test for MS & SEGA/Atlus is gonna come from the Western sales performance; already if UK physical charts are any indication there's an argument that the deal might've been a hamper on sales for it on PS5 in that country at least physically, but I'm just guessing. The US will be the best test of that marketing's effectiveness (or not), since MS still does physical releases there and, to their credit, they've been putting up a lot of TV adverts (I've seen them regularly on Cartoon Network/Toonami/Adult Swim blocks the past 2-3 weeks).

If this game doesn't chart in Top 5 for Xbox AND doesn't chart Top 10 for all platforms (or barely manages to, say it's #8 for the month)...that should indicate the marketing deal did jack shit for Xbox and might've hurt adoption on PlayStation and Steam due to zero mention of those platforms in any Western marketing. Whether the latter ends up true would depend on how soft the numbers are for it to get a lower Top 10 rank for the month.

IIRC SEGA/Atlus do share digital with Circana (right?), but if it's only physical data they provide then the ranking for the PlayStation charts could still act as some sort of barometer.

Yeah, you might be onto something. It's just that I thought it would sell slightly more than P3R did (my prediction was that it would do between PR3 and Infinite Wealth numbers wise, so around 130k to 140k physical copies), considering it probably had a bigger marketing push in Japan than the Persona 3 Remake with dedicated TV spots, etc.

And even though it's a new JRPG IP, it’s made by the same developers who created P3, P4, and P5, which IMO should further drum up hype for the game. Still, those 108k sales would translate to anything from 150k to 200k when also accounting for digital, which is around the ballpark of SMTV launch sales on Switch, so yeah good numbers for a brand new JRPG IP.

Regarding Metaphor's status as an Atlus game benefiting from other Atlus IPs, I get what you're saying. It's actually very similar to what I was expecting would help Starfield last year, given Bethesda's pedigree. But in Metaphor's case I think it's a good enough game to where it doesn't need to rely on brand association with the other IPs, and maybe Atlus felt similar prior to launch because the adverts I've seen don't mention things like "from the makers of Persona & SMT"...tho I haven't seen the Japanese adverts so can't say if those do that or not.

I also think digital might be somewhat higher for Metaphor than P3R because of Steam (also seems like China is a sizable market for the game and they're predominantly PC), so it's possible that with digital + physical it's performed better than that game & IW's debuts. We won't know though unless SEGA/Atlus do regional breakdowns of physical + digital. It would be nice if we got platform breakdowns too but, well, that's just me wanting to troll 😁

Metaphor on Xbox not even in the top 30 ☠️ ☠️ ☠️ ☠️ ☠️

TBF, it's only physical sales chart, but I imagine even with digital Xbox didn't do much for Metaphor in Japan. Maybe 2K-3K at best physical + digital o.0

With Mario Party Jamboree and DQ3R Switch SKU, Nintendo Switch software market share will end up around 80% by the end of 2024

Wizardry on Switch completely stomped the PS5 version. PS5 is such a horrible console to sell (physical) software on.
