Sales ranking announced by Famitsu. This time we bring you a summary of the estimated weekly sales figures for video game software and hardware from December 2nd to December 8th, 2024.

Super Mario Party Jamboree which allows you to control characters from the Super Mario series and play over 110 diverse mini-games is doing well. Sales of this title have increased by about 16,000 units compared to last week and sales are expected to increase further around Christmas and New Year's when demand increases.

Other titles featuring Mario and friends include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in third place, Mario & Luigi RPG Brotherhood! in fifth place and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in ninth place with the cumulative sales of Mario & Luigi RPG Brotherhood! surpassing 100,000 units.

Also ranking 8th among new releases is HoneHoneSaurus X Super Combination! Build & Battle, an assembly simulation plus action battle game based on the candy toy HoneHoneSaurus. Fantasian Neo Dimension developed by Mistwalker, led by Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of the Final Fantasy series) and with music by Nobuo Uematsu, also made it into 10th place.

The number of Switches sold in Japan is something else, crazy...
It's funny that after the first 2 weeks, I see that sales of the PS5 PRO just plummeted, while sales of the regular PS5 actually doubled.

The slim model promos kinda killed the Pro for now. Makes sense tbh.

NSW DQ3R is going to pass 1m mark soon and will have over 80% split with PS5 version.

I think that's enough data for Square Enix to prioritise Switch version of next mainline Dragon Quest game over other platforms.

So, you think that when the promo of the Cheapest models ends people are going to buy the most expensive one… That doesn’t make sense at all… That’s only tells that the economy of Japan isn’t healthy right now.

People are making a decision between largely 3 models and the price gap between a digital and a PS5 Pro especially during the discounting period is massive.

In February though Monster Hunter Wilds is going to release and this could be a boon for PS5 Pro, especially if people look to upgrade their current PS5s in order to play it or move on from PS4 or Switch.

Should Switch sales now be counted as part of Xbox hardware sales now it’s “a Xbox” ? :p

Great Switch sales. There’s usually a crazy week or two around next week for Nintendo hardware at this time of year maybe a couple of 200k weeks although I don’t know what deals they have for Japan.

PS5 selling half of Switch when that sells 80k should be considered a win in Japan imo. 40k consoles a week isn’t too bad considering we’ve seen many weeks of sub 20k this year.

Edit*

PS5 actually sold 50k. Even better.

Price of PS5 Pro is ridiculous. but I think it's the right strategy for Sony. The main problem in Japan (like in Europe) is the current price of PS5, even with the sale it's too expensive, even in Europe.

Depends on how powerful the next switch will be also depends on how graphically intensive they make the next DQ entry too. But yes having a massive user base of consoles means it makes more sense to release it there as only a tiny fraction would need to purchase versus a small user base where nearly everyone would need to buy to do the same numbers.

However new switch will be at the same point it’s going to start from nothing so if Nintendo screw it up then low user base won’t be getting the games. The only thing that saved PS4 from not having more of it’s 3rd party games stolen was some are just too demanding for switch this time around they will have more power to play with. Nintendo better have a plan to wine & dine new users into upgrading to get that user base growing.

Pleased to see DQ3 doing great, although kind of expected as out of the original 3 it’s the one held in the highest regard in Japan. Can’t wait to see the other 2 given the 2DHD treatment, the environments are so pretty in 3.

People are just buying the Slim because the price that’s obvious… When the promo ends its not like they have more budget to buy the most expensive. Sony should keep that price to make more impact IMO… PS5 was selling around 10-15K weekly without promos.

I think you need to pay more attention to WHO is buying and when.

You still have about 3 million+ PS4 owners in Japan who haven't upgraded to a PS5. The question for them is what makes sense based on what they're playing. If you're playing Genshin Impact does it make sense to upgrade to a PS5? Maybe not at a high price.

Genshin Impact doesn't have a PS5 Pro patch yet. So no one is buying a PS5 Pro to play Genshin Impact, but what might push PS5 Pro sales is as I mentioned Monster Hunter Wilds.

When the promo ends, it's not as if people are going to stop buying PS5s altogether. So why did they wait until after the promo ended just to pay more?

  • Not everyone is aware of the promo
  • Catalyst for upgrading, i.e. new game, birthdays, new job, promotion, graduation present, old system fails, e.t.c.

I didn’t say that, i am pretty sure that when the promos ends the sales are going back to same baseline as before 10K-15K + whatever the PS5 Pro baseline is going to be. I think that Sony at least in Japan should drop the price of the PS5 Slim permanently, but it looks like they don’t want to take any more loses.

Again, explain why it makes sense to drop the price of the console if it isn't going to increase software sales. If you're only selling to people who are currently playing F2P games on PS4, what is the incentive for Sony to drop the price?

Unless Sony is going to drop the price enough to not only encourage PS4 owners to upgrade but enough to bring in non-PS4 owners, I'm not sure I see the point. And I'm pretty sure that Sony isn't currently prepared/interested in dropping the price enough to entice non PS4 owners at this time.

I think we'll see the first major permanent price cuts happen in 2026, once the GTA6 and current gen exclusive sports boosts subsides. 2026 will likely be a bigger year for Sony than 2025.

I don't think they need any more evidence. Switch has been the focus platform for DQ for a while now.

I think PS5 sales will really take off when Assassins Creed Shadows releases. As an expert in Japanese culture, I can tell you that the Japanese audience really loves ninjas and samurai.

I know you're being sarcastic, but it does look like a strong year for PlayStation in Japan next year

  • Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Ghost of Yotei
  • GTA6

And I would not be surprised if Dragon Quest 12 comes out next year, though most likely in 2026.

That really depends on if DQ12 is a Switch game vs a Switch 2 game. Whether they stick with Unreal Engine 4 or move on to Unreal Engine 5 or a proprietary engine. I think the timing also matters around a PS5 handheld.

My guess is DQ12 will be announced with the Switch 2.

Even if we don't get DQ 12, DQ1+2 should do good numbers.
Every bit of Switch software is new or a plus :pie_diana:
It's the holiday period, we might see the entire top 30 be new or a plus (depending on how DQ did on PS5).

I guess we’ll see. My bet is that Switch 2 will totally overshadow anything PlayStation. Here and there we’ll see the PS5 version of some game pop up in the charts for a week or two before vanishing.

To increase the install base of the console and increase the revenue, at least is a better strategy than what they have right now.

When the Switch 2 comes out in Japan is going to be game over for Playstation there, even 2025 is to late, forget about 2026. Also, i am pretty sure that MH is going to come to Switch 2 by next year.

You're clueless.

Again, explain how moving current Ps4 owners who play largely F2P games onto PS5 to play the same F2P games increases revenue.

When the Switch 2 comes out, there's a good chance that is cost more than the PS5 Digital. Assuming it's going to have significant sales out of the gates is a major assumption that has not been consistent with Nintendo products.

Monster Hunter coming to Switch 2 after its already sold on PS5 has no impact on PS5.

I do also think we'll see it at the Switch 2 reveal or shortly afterwards.

It seems a missed opportunity to me not to port DQ12 down to the original Switch for those 30 million+ users in Japan.

Even if the resolution/framerate isnt that good, I think its worth the effort (like it was for Hogwarts Legacy). This is assuming the game arrives before the end of 2026.

Switch 2 will be strong but it won't overshadow everything. PS5 will have several games not available on Switch 2 (at least at launch).

Even with F2P games, Sony makes money with every micro transaction made in the platform and obviously every people that buys the console is going to buy a few games at full price, like i said before an strategy to increase the install base is better than what they have right now.

I am not pretty sure about that, especially in Japan, even with the game coming early to PS5 and a bigger installed base the Switch 2 version is going to surpass it in sales in no time, of course it’s going to have a impact. MH is an ever green title there.

Is there any reason to think that people will spend more on their F2P MTX on PS5 than they currently are on PS4?

Again, you fundamentally don't understand that whether someone plays a F2P game on PS4 or PS5 makes no difference in revenue.

If you can't understand this, you're kind of a lost cause.

The Switch 1 is overshadowing everything right now, the Switch 2 is going to be worse. Third party support for that console it’s not going to be a joke.

You are assuming that every future buyer is going to play F2P games only… Increase the install base is always a good thing. BTW it’s not like the PlayStation brand is doing wonders with their actual strategy in Japan…

It's not just whether they play F2P games only, but if they're playing F2P games predominantly, you're not going to be able to rely on them buying games at an increased rate on PS5 vs PS4 in order to offset the loss taken on hardware that you're prescribing.

You somehow think it is lost on Sony that they can sell more units at a lower price.

Operating income is more important to Sony at this point and everything is a balance around that. They're outpacing the PS4. For a console that can't rely on being a media player, it's performing quite well. It'll likely outsell the PS3 and PS4 there. We'll have to see if it can outsell the Wii.
