Famitsu Sales: Week 23, 2025 (Jun 02 - Jun 08) Nintendo Switch 2 Launch

These numbers do not include my Nintendo store, so it is absolutely over 1million+, and is the biggest launch of any videogame console ever.

Oh wow, I didn't know that!

At first I was thinking it included all sources, and PS2 on record seems to have done 980K in Japan in its first 3 days, so I figured Switch 2 tracked under that very slightly.

But if My Nintendo numbers aren't included, then yeah, it's absolutely surpassed PS2's launch numbers for Japan then, and easily 1+ million in the same period. Nintendo also likely prioritized Japan to an extent for shipments, which would've helped. That also means MK World attach rate is probably even higher than the Famitsu charts indicate, since it wouldn't include bundles from My Nintendo, or digital copies (even if digital ratio is low).

Beast of a launch, truly.

Way higher Switch 2 and Mario Kart numbers than I expected. But pretty terrible software numbers outside of that.

Most of those other launch titles are ports of quite old games that've been readily available on other platforms for years now. And AFAIK, no new compelling content added to the Switch 2 versions.

In the case of Zelda & whatnot, you can also simply buy the upgrades for the Switch 1 version IIRC, but that'd mean those were digital sales (the upgrades). They wouldn't be tracked in Famitsu.

I'm starting to think the $80 Mario Kart was to subsidized the massively stocked discounted Japanese only Switch 2. No way Nintendo was gonna sell millions of Switch 2s that cheap without recouping the costs somewhere.

From the rest of the world, you're welcome.

Where's the new software other than MKW? Switch 2 needs a direct and some new games asap. And I say this as someone who owns two Switch 2s in my house.

DK Bananza is coming soon, and Splatoon Raiders probably later this year in Fall. I'd like to think they'll have a Direct either late Summer or early Fall showing off what's coming in 2026 and beyond.

947K is pretty good. That makes up about 30% of total units worldwide.

Also a roughly 82% attach rate for Mario Kart World!

It's actually higher for both because (apparently) My Nintendo numbers aren't counted with the Famitsu ones.

If that's the case, definitely 1+ million for Switch 2 hardware and potentially even slightly higher attach rate for MK World in Japan.

Amazing Results for Switch 2 and Mario Kart World, third parties didn't get a chance. Also it's weird that PS5 got a boost during Switch 2 launch week.

Cyberpunk flopping is harsh, considering it was a proper physical release and not the Game Keycard nonsense.

I think its doing ok worldwide but yea it doesn't look like its made a dent in Japan.

On a separate note, Nintendo couldn't have shipped 60k more to get it over the 1 million number in Japan.

These numbers don't include those sold directly from Nintendo. They most definitely cleared 1m in Japan with those numbers.

Over 1 million in few days, insane numbers.

Software launch do those kinda of things. Sony of all companies forgot that.
Yeah...Rise of the Ronin (console exclusive with its development paid by Sony), Stellar Blade (korean but also appealing to a japanese audience, also paid by Sony, also console exclusive), FFVII Rebirth (console exclusive), Astrobot (made by a 1st party studio, PS5 exclusive), Silent Hill 2 (console exclusive), the future Ghost of Yotei (made by a western studio but it's all about japan's history, PS5 exclusive), Death Stranding 2 (made by one of Japan's biggest gaming producers ever) and the newly announced Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls made by a japanese studio, handpicked by Playstation, Nioh 3, PS5 console exclusive. The huge marketing campaign Playstation had earlier this year for Monster Hunter, including a PS5 bundle, etc....

90% of their most recent State of Play was all about Japan in fact...imagine if only Sony cared about Japanese videogames :(

I wonder what excuse will be used by the someone suffering from NDS?

i once heard from devs on tokyo game show, it could be 50 50, but he might be wrong though
This a special case though. There's no benefit to buying a Switch 2 on its own and then downloading Mario Kart. You may as well just get the bundle.

Yes the third party lineup wasn't particularly strong, but even then I would have expected these games to do better.

PS5 boost is from days of play.

Gamekey cards are going to be tracked as digital sales at least in the case of Capcom, so no reports on Famitsu expected.

(the irony in this photo is that the rikishi depicted was former Ozeki Konishiki of hawaian/american origin unlike the very japanese Nintendo)

Of course it's a week with a (biggest) console launch (ever) so a huge cherry pick.

Famitsu tracks key cards as they are sold through stores. They aren't affected by Capcom's accounting decisions.

Third parties are going to have to bring new games to find success in Japan.

Where are PS1, Saturn, and N64 among the big systems? All three outdid the PS3 I'm sure, and I'm sure Saturn outdid GameCube (or feel such, anyhow, going by old reports I try hard to remember).

Third parties are going to have to bring new games to find success in Japan.

Was Cyberpunk even that popular in Japan to begin with? I don't think it's a "big" game in that country, and I'd imagine most of its sales (and audience) in Japan are on PlayStation, Steam & possibly GOG.

But otherwise yeah, ports of super-old releases with little to no new content appealing to Nintendo demographics shouldn't be expected to pull amazing numbers. Nintendo's own games with the upgrade options, well they're Switch 1 titles with digital upgrade paths, so I'd imagine most are taking that route.

The 3P movers will come soon enough. Minecraft, for example, as that's been a consistent Top 10 ranker for Switch in Japan for years.

When I see those 16k Switch1's being sold I guess that's like me and the latest iPhone. I make sure I'm 3-4 versions back because what they offer is good enough for my needs.

Probably ~1.2 Million in Japan including the Nintendo store sales and ~2.3 Million for the rest of the world.
Nah, I think this it too much. Don't overstate the stock from Nintendo themselves, they need to keep good relationships with the retailers.
I think if they kept 100k for MyNintendo, it would already be a lot.

1.2 million according to the reports were destined for Japan launch day. And the International version of the console is going to start selling on July 4 over there.
