[Weekly software and hardware sales figures] "Donkey Kong Returns HD" tops the charts for the fourth time! "Urban Legend Dismantling Center" and "Sid Meier's Civilization VII" also make it into the top 10 [2/10-2/16]

Sales ranking announced by Famitsu. Here is a summary of the estimated weekly sales figures for video games and hardware from February 10th to February 16th, 2025 in Japan.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, an HD remaster of the action game released for the Wii in 2010, with many additional courses and new features for easier play is doing well. It sold 14,753 units taking the top spot for the fourth time and for the first time in two weeks.

Coming in at number four is the adventure game Urban Legend Dismantling Center, published by Shueisha Games and developed by Hakaba Bunko. The game is characterized by its pixel art visuals and a drama-style story woven by quirky characters and a puzzle-solving project to commemorate its release will run until March 3, 2025 (Monday). The production of an audio drama has also been announced so it is likely to continue to attract attention.

Another title worth noting is the switch version of Sid Meier's Civilization VII, which ranked 7th. This is the latest installment in the strategy game series which has sold over 73 million unitsworldwide and a VR version is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2025. This is also a title that we are interested in hearing more about.

“Wah wah wah why do Nintendo think they can get away with $60 remasters!!!”

Returns has probably sold around 1.5 million copies in its first month lol.

I hope they price GameCube, Wii and 3DS remasters at $70 next gen just to annoy people online.

And yes I’ll happily buy them if it’s a game I’ve never played. Returns was awesome!

Is anybody noticing just how many PS5 Pros are selling as a percentage of total PS5s these days?! It's around 33% of all new PS5 sales. I didn't see this coming.

Yes but that essentially proves that PS5 costs too much to reach the mainstream market in Japan, it's selling just to core gamers and those people are more likely to be willing to spend more to have the best.
The latest price increase hurt sales of the base PS5 considerably in Japan.
But probably Sony doesn't care since they have super strong sales globally and in this way they can increase their profits as well.

Good point. How much does the PS5 Base cost in Japan nowadays?

But Pro is selling around 1/3 of PS5 so price might not be the biggest factor

Price is not the biggest factor indeed but just because it has become generally so high even on the base model that only dedicated gamers are buying a PS5 in Japan. In that market price is less important, people want the best, hence the strong Pro sales.
But the latest price increase cut the sales of the base model by 40-50%, that's a lot. YOY decline is significant and with the Pro helping sales.
Essentially Sony has just positioned itself as a product for dedicated gamers in Japan.

Yeah, I was surprised by the ratio and how much it has held. I think the right people, i.e. the target audience sees the PS5 Pro as a no brainer. It probably can't be reduced to early adopters at this point given the sustained sales numbers. Every Pro they sell, they're selling at a high margin compared to the slim margins on the base units, and possibly still some losses, probably on the digital.

That percentage is going to take a dip because of the Monster Hunter bundle though. We should see signs of a PS5 boost starting on the next week's chart.

And for reference Monster Hunter World debuted with 1.245 million units sold. The PS4 had 6 million LTD sales before MH World hit. The PS5 actually has a larger userbase, though I expect we'll see lower chart sales due to digital. What'll be important is how many PS5s can sell when the game launches. 140K PS4s sold the week World launched and that covered only 1 day of sales. It sold another 100K the week after that.

If the PS5 can generate 70% of that you're looking at 168K units sold, which would put it right in line with last years numbers, with Ghost of Yotei, GTA6 yet to release and Onimusha releasing next year.

Does the price of the PS5 need to come down to generate robust sales? Absolutely, but I think we're not at that stage where Sony is going to drastically reduce the price yet. I think that will come universally post-GTA6 boost.

I'm guessing Sony will put forward a pretty strong forecast of at least 17 million units for the next fiscal year. They only need 2.3 million in Q4 to hit their forecast of 18 million units. With the strength of Monster Hunter, I'm pretty sure they'll get there and then some. That would put them around 77.2 million units at the end of the fiscal year. An additional 17 million units next fiscal year would bring them to 94.2 million units by the end of March 31st, 2026. 15 million units per year for the next 2 fiscal years would bring them to 124 million units, well above the PS4 even before the PS6 launch assuming it launches in November 2028 and I expect the PS5 to have a long tail...

I wonder is Monster hunter pushing that or is that just the new normal. The Pro is doing very well at such a high price.
