[Weekly software and hardware sales figures] "Super Mario Party Jamboree" tops the charts for the eighth time and sells over 1 million units! Cumulative Switch sales exceed 35 million units [12/23 - 1/5]​

Sales ranking announced by Famitsu. This time, we bring you a summary of estimated weekly sales figures for video games and hardware from December 23, 2024 to January 5, 2025.

*Due to the calculation period the rankings are based on the combined totals for both weeks.

The titles in the top 10 remained almost the same as last week, with only slight changes in the rankings. Super Mario Party Jamboree which lets you control characters from the Super Mario series and play over 110 different mini-games also performed well over the two week period by selling 236,483 units.

This marks the eighth time it has topped the charts and it has recorded a strong performance with cumulative sales exceeding 1 million units.

Other titles released in 2024 include Dragon Quest III: into the Legend in second place, Mario & Luigi RPG Brothership! in fifth place and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom in eighth place. Like the other top 10 regular titles these titles are likely to have long-term sales.

On the other hand, looking at hardware, the Nintendo Switch has been doing well with a combined total of 186,277 units sold, including the Nintendo Switch Lite and OLED models. Cumulative sales in Japan have finally topped 35 million units.

Funny thing is that Nintendo went weaker to get away from the other bigger companies but now if they went for power they’d have the monopoly, outside of a few Sony diehards.

Microsoft and Sony already put their games on Switch, if the Switch 2 had been powerful enough for things like GTA 6 and Witcher 4 alongside Mario Kart and Animal Crossing it would have taken MS out for sure.

We are only getting one of their biggest franchises a gen anyway so it’s not like low power = speed these days.

Switch 2 won't have GTA 6, the biggest game ever. That game alone will keep people on PS/Xbox. And there will still be plenty of third party developers not willing to go through the difficulties of porting current gen games on technology that is nearly 15 years old

Imagine monopoly on steroids with a crazy amount of random events. The boards are huge spanning hundreds of spaces covering all of japan. The newest release spanning the entire globe you have to fly & sail as well as use trains to get to the station the round chooses been able to throw literal handfuls of dice to help get around while the god of poverty looms where if you are unlucky he can send you billions in debt. If you like boardgames it's a wild time, add in you can play online against strangers then continue that same game offline with the cpu filling in for the players that are missing means you can always find people to play. There's also special themed events konami keep adding in so the game modes are always doing something new.

Japan loves family games they can play together which is why this series does numbers that western AAA devs could only dream of having and all from a simple board game series.

I mean the sales numbers would tell you they should hold off on Switch 2 until 2026. Any other company would be content to ride this success, and it's success beyond anyones wildest dreams. I wouldn't blame them.

Now I understand what you meant (it wasn't clear) however it isn't completely true, at least in U.S.
NSW annual sales in U.S. were inferior to PS4 ones when it launched in 2017 and was available on the market for only 10 months instead of a full year but since the following year (first full year) Switch was the annually best selling console in U.S. for 5 consecutive years.
It didn't take a couple years, it was faster.

The point is Astrobot is selling something because it's targeting japanese console gamers. It's been, what, decades since Sony even tried to do that. For the money it cost, peanuts, AstroBot is a tremendous success in the world and a moderate success in Japan. When was the last time Sony had a game charting during the same period of year ?

It's just abysmal how little PS software cracks the Top 30 on a consistent basis. Like P Physiognomonics was saying, or at least suggesting, SIE need a lot more games like Astro Bot if they want software situation in places like Japan to improve. The good thing about titles like Astro Bot, is that they also have a lot of global appeal, so it's a win-win, AND they're much cheaper to make than a Spiderman or TLOU.

Like, they really need more of that type of AA software in their lineup, not just to improve software sales in Japan, but to just bolster their publishing range altogether. Last year had Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, MLB The Show, and Astro Bot. The standouts (in terms of sales) were Helldivers and arguably Astro Bot (I think it got a big boost from winning GOTY at the TGAs). But some of that was negated by the disaster that was Concord.

This year they've got Ghosts of Yotei, MLB, Fairgame$, maybe Marathon, and that's it. Fairgame$ is a massive risk considering what happened to Concord so unless changes were made to any "particular" ideological strong-arming messages in there, that game could be a massive flop. Marathon isn't a lock for 2025, MLB is MLB so that really just leaves Yotei as the big one. IIRC they aren't publishing Death Stranding 2. What I'm saying is the publishing pipeline is looking kinda light, and in relation to Japan only Yotei will likely have major traction considering how well Tsushima did in that market.

But they need more than 1 game every year or couple of years to build up & sustain solid software sales in places like Japan. Yes it's a smaller market than America & Europe these days, but it's clearly not a footnote. I mean, Japan's been carrying Switch for the past two or so years even while sales in other parts of the world noticeably softened. I just hope SIE are serious about expanding internal development (with 1P & 3P studios) to more AA games, especially those leveraging legacy IP (but a balance of legacy & new IP would be realistic). Hopefully it's not just lip service or something that doesn't really manifest until PS6.

2: SIE could be intentionally keeping physical supply low for any myriad of reasons. Considering the game's quality and its style being a good fit for the Japanese market, it's logical to assume if physical supply were better, more physical copies would be sold.

But it's hard to prove that unless SIE...actually increase the supply. Just some time ago people were saying DQIII dropped off in Japan but didn't consider that it was supply-constrained. Now the physical stock is back and it's been doing very well on the charts because of it.

Could be a similar situation for Astro Bot. Not to the same degree/volume of demand, clearly. But similar.

I agree with a lot of that, the most important thing being driving those dev costs down and design games that focus more on new game mechanics and playability, much like Nintendo does. Ideally, Id wish the whole game industry do the same thing as Nintendo and bail out of the high end hardware race. Leave that to those who want to mess around with their own custom parts, and not let that dictate how games are made for under the TV consoles. But I dont think their (PS + Xbox) customers will understand.

It's funny how Sony gets no credit for Astro Bot. It's like you can make something like Astro Bot, but it only fuels more criticism because you haven't done MORE stuff like Astro Bot. They should get credit for making a GOTY winning game and whether that can fuel more stuff like this while certainly up in the air, shouldn't be seen as impossible.

Lots of people criticized them for closing Japan Studio, but the byproduct of that was maybe the best game Sony Japan has ever made, a studio that is far more sustainable than Team ICO and probably far more profitable. Seems like people made good decisions to get Astro Bot made.

I think people should recognize there is a massive disconnect between physical sales charts and digital sales.

Looking at this list, you'd think Astro Bot and Dragon Quest 3 would be the top selling digital games... They aren't even close. First off, the top revenue games in Japan are all F2P games: Genshin Impact, Apex Legends, Wuthering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero. It's not until Monster Hunter is a paid game even on the list, but then we're back to F2P with Valorant and eFootball.

But even among non-F2P games, Astro Bot and DQ3 are no where to be found.

I don't think these physical charts tell us the whole story of software sales in Japan.
