Unfortunately the tone in society has been to belittle fat people. It's pretty out of control, and uncalled for. Dealing with being overweight isn't easy. It's hard to do anything without feeling good about yourself at first, and it's hard to feel good about yourself when you're dumped by people constantly, in addition to trying to find clothes that are somewhat flattering (I seriously can't stand fucking "BIG DOGZ" shirts and whatever), being sore, ache-y, tired, etc, and all the pressure you put on yourself. I know I need to do something about my weight, calling me a "fat whale" isn't going to be a positive influence. Should we coddle people? No, I don't think so, not really in any situation-- people need to take responsibility for their actions. A friend sent me a link the other day to the Amazon site of a self-image book for overweight people. A way to feel good about yourself, to make positive changes, and to ultimately become healthier by way of feeling better about yourself. There was some review written by some asshole which said, basically, "hey, this book is a problem-- it's not okay to be overweight, go buy some workout videos you lardasses. People don't find you attractive because you're gross and have no self control." Holy shit. That sort of thing really gets my goat.
You know what? I'm usually pretty well-natured about my weight. I know I'm overweight. I know it's not healthy. And nine times out of ten, I'll crack jokes about you with it. But I don't need to be constantly lectured on how it's bad-- I don't like feeling the way I do. I need positive influences, not negative, if I'm going to fucking do anything about it, and constnatly belittling me isn't going to change anything, contrary to popular belief.
But whatever, it's not something that'll ever be fixed. What people find "attractive" is mostly a sham, and barely achievable. There's a difference from having a little bit of chubbiness (which I find extremely attractive on the ladies), and being fat. And the idea that that chubbiness is being fat is shoved down everyone's fucking throats day in and day out. Shit's gotta stop...
