Favorite console design?

Indreama's console design was good.

IAWTP

Next Gen I want a console that doesn't feel ashamed next to my AV separates gear.

IMHO all this gen's console's have been downright ugly - no exception (Unless you count the PSX - but I don't)

PSX/Indrema style >>>>>>>>>>>>>> PS2/Xbox/GC style

All IMO

Of all time, the Megadrive. It was so sexy you could actually make love to it.

Of the current generation I like the Xbox. True, it's an ugly bugger, but it doesn't give a damn about being ugly or fat or disliked by pikmin-sized japs. I like my consoles like I like my women- fat.

Wasn't mentioned before, but I like it. It's isn't such a boxy design as you see it often.

Atari 5200:

This was a stunning piece of hardware when it was first introduced in 1982. A sleek, smooth black body was accented by a metal faceplate with the logo. There was even a built in controller storage compartment near the rear of the machine. Physically, it was a very large console. The overall package gave the impression that this was the system of the future that was here today.

Aspects of this machine's design also influenced the Atari 7800 and the 1986 redesign of the Atari 2600. Here's the 7800, with a similarly elegant design in a package that was much smaller than the 5200 (comparable in size to the original 2600):

Here's the 1986 redesign of the 2600, which was a very small machine, along the lines of the PSone or the new model PS2:

Narrowing it to one, I'd say the Gamecube. It has a nice kind retro/industrial aesthetic, and it is oh so small.

I like the new PSTwo quite a bit...it looks so much better smaller, haha.
The PSP is undeniably nice to look at so far as well.
GBA-SP in platinum is wonderful! Unlike the GC which is beautiful in black. The platinum looks cheap outside of photos.
N64 is god awful.
Dreamcast should have had a larger black coloration release too, without the sports logo.

I myself find three groups of designs:

SNES (PAL), GBA, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation, PSOne, NDS are clear and no-risk designs that look good and will age well IMO.

PS2, PSTwo, Gamecube and GBA SP share boxy, minimalistic designs that are my personal favourites, although may find some detractors.

Then, there are the Xbox, Genesis/Mega Drive and N64, which boast some ugly exaggerated design that looks ugly now and will even uglier as time passes, IMO.

When running through the Atari console designs of the early to mid 1980s, I should also mention this other variation of the Atari 2600 sold in Japan, known as the Atari 2800:

Atari2800-2.jpg

The case design was sleek, and the overall form would later undergo a few minor modifications and become the casing for the 7800. The controllers were combination joystick and paddle controllers. You would push buttons on the console to determine whether you were using them as joysticks or paddles, and an LED would light up accordingly. Apart from those differences, it was essentially the same system as the 2600 internally.

Although this machine wasn't released in the US under the "Atari 2800" name, it was sold exclusively through Sears under the name Sears Video Arcade II:

The nameplates were different, but otherwise it was the same as the 2800. In case you're wondering about the "II," it's the successor to the original Video Arcade, which was simply the original 2600 sold under the Sears name.

I'm a sucker for neat, compact designs, so the PSTwo, GC, GBA SP, and GB Pocket instantly come to mind for me.

I also think the N64 looked pretty neat, and the Saturn had a nice stately simplicity going on that was aesthetically pleasing as well.

Some of the color PS2's are really... REALLY nice.

But, for some reason... I always find myself drooling over white consoles:

White Saturn
White PS2
White PSP
The Clear Xbox (white ISH)

I dunno... white screams class.

Agent X beat me to the Atari 5200 love, but I have to second it. The damn thing was like the gaming equivalent of a Super Star Destroyer - huge, sleek, and freakin' awesome. It also had the best trackball controller ever:

The damn thing is almost as large as the 5200 itself. Together, the combination is vast and glorious.

Also, let's not forget the power of:

Ah, the Vectrex. DS? PSP? Hah! This is real portable gaming. If by "portable" you mean "easy to lug around the house".
